Henry Winter's Premier League Team of the Decade
Telegraph Sport's Football Correspondent Henry Winter has chosen his team of the decade from the Premier League. Have your say on the great players of the last 10 years.
16 Dec 2009 Who would be in your Premier League XI of the decade? Henry Winter has chosen his and we've profiled his selection below, but want you to have your say on the best players of the Noughties. Henry says: "Omitting Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane because they played only half the epoch, and with respectful nods to Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes, Sami Hyypia and Jussi Jaaskelainen among others." Here's his XI, in 4-4-2 formation: Goalkeeper * Shay Given: Manchester City's 33 year-old stopper has maintained the standards he set at Newcastle United. Defenders * Gary Neville: An Old Trafford great, Neville G has made over 500 appearances for Manchester United since graduating from the team's youth squad. * Rio Ferdinand: The world's most expensive defender, Ferdinand joined Manchester United for £30m in July 2002 and has matured into a solid, composed player. * John Terry, capt: A commanding, passionate centre-back who emerged from the Chelsea Academy to become captain of his club and country. * Ashley Cole: Although he fails to inspire affection among many fans, the 28 year-old is admired for his poise in defence and eye for attacking options. Midfielders * Cristiano Ronaldo: Searing pace and mesmerising footwork combine to make Ronaldo the most lethal winger in the game, and the most expensive player in history. * Frank Lampard: One of the most complete midfielders of his generation, 31 year-old Lampard's consistency brings with it tireless work, accurate passing and an impressive goal-scoring record. * Steven Gerrard: A one-club man with Liverpool, Gerrard's match-winning ability has made him an Anfield hero. * Ryan Giggs: The 36-year-old, named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, looks set to end his triumphant career where he began, at Manchester United, and be remembered for his dribbling skills and electric pace. Strikers * Wayne Rooney: Bursting into the England side at 17, while at Everton, Rooney is now firmly established as one of the most powerful, yet skilful, forwards in the game. * Thierry Henry: Despite that notorious handball, Henry should be remembered for his electric pace, superb skills and outrageous talent. Manager * Sir Alex Ferguson: as the rock of Old Trafford clocks up 900 games with Manchester United, there is only one choice here. Premier League team of the decade: Henry Winter's Noughties XI - Telegraph I know there have been a fair few of theses but as journos go Henry Winter is certainly better than most IMO, so the above is hwo he saw it. |

The only times I have seen Friedel has been when he played against us. Plus, from everything I heard, he isn't just a big game player, but is a solid all round keeper.
In recent times, he has been great everytime I have seen him. I think he should have at least got a mention, whether its in the actually team or in the second paragraph |

Paul Scholes should be in there. Roy Keane would get in ahead of Lampard too. I know it's a bit diffucilt to choose the central midfield, since Gerrard needs to be in there, but Lampard hasn't been as good as either Scholes or Keane. Plus Lampard and Gerrard have already proven what a shit partnership they are.
Can't really argue with the rest. Would maybe have a Bargkamp or Zola in there just for the genius factor. Rooney would have to make way though. |

But then Keane isn't halped by his career tailing off at the beginning of the decade, whilst Gerrard and Lampard have been in the ascendant as ti ahs gone on.

I think this list is the first time I've ever seen Lampard hailed for his "tireless work"

I'd have:
---------------------------- Schmeichel ---------------------------- Neville ----------- Ferdinand ------------ Terry ----------------- Cole Ronaldo ------------ Vieira ---------- Scholes ---------------- Giggs -------------------- Shearer ------------ Henry --------------------- |

VDS or Cech isntead of Given, Scholes instead of Gerrard, Keane/Vieira instead of Lampard, Ruud instead of Rooney then you have the perfect list:
VDS/Cech Neville - Ferdinand - Terry - Cole Ronaldo - Scholes - Keane/Vieira - Giggs Ruud - Henry Could swap Terry for Vidic or Carvalho, and could swap Cole for Evra, but the above team is pretty accurate I think. |

VDS or Cech should be in goal, Ruud or Drogba should be there in place of Rooney, and Scholes should be in instead of Gerrard or Lampard. Other than that I can't disgree with it. The defense is spot on.

My team would be: Cech Neville Vidic Ferdinand Evra Ronaldo Gerrard Scholes Giggs Henry Van Nistelrooy If that list looks bias, that'll be because we won the league 6 of the 10 seasons this decade!!! |

People may complain about the Rooney selection but outside of Henry and Van Nistelrooy I think there is no other forward who has done more in the decade. Drogba hasn't always been brilliant at Chelsea, Rooney for me has been more consistent. Zola left in 2003 and Bergkamp wasn't as influential in his last few years at Arsenal.Shearer was at his best in the 90s.Rooney's selection is nor more controversial than a few others for me.
