Lisbon showing how many (in millions) miles away English youth football is from the likes of Lisbon and Barcelona. Playing the likes of Southend and Watford in meaningless youth/reserves leagues is stunting growth beyond belief.

Could this tournament, and more like them, be the green shoots of England winning the world cup in the next 20 years?

Playing away, that's probably (?) not a bad result for the young Spurs team.

Having said that I've no idea whatsoever as to how good (or not) Basel are. The same applies to my knowledge of the other youth teams involved. From the above results, it would seem that Sporting Lisbon are good, but does anyone know which of the other 14 teams are known to be strong?

Anyhow, the prolific Harry Kane scores yet again! I'd like to see him given a chance to play in some of our Europa Cup games.

I agree with the point you're making, but I don't understand why you're singling out Watford. They've the most progressive academy system in the land and I wouldn't be surprised to see bigger clubs take a leaf out of their book in the near future.

Id imagine he meant the level of the football being played rather than the standard of the oppositions actually academies. As you said Watford's is excellent. Seem to remember them getting high praise from Ajax coaches

Looking forward to seeing Sterling score a gazillion times a game in this tournament. He is the business.

Tweeted in response to the rumours that he was going to Bolton on loan:

Obviously, the 2 are related and Watford have done very well in the youth cup for years now.

Actually Watford was a bad example. They actually do have a good set of young lads, saw them play against our reserves last week (repeats). But continuing with that theme, imagine how many trillion miles away they are form the likes of Lisbon/Barca.

Our creme need to be playing more against the latter than the former.

Glad all the English clubs failed to win. The competition is a joke consider this countries top youth side is not competing.

United defeated Juventus, Barcelona, Flamengo, and Porto to win the Champions Youth Cup in 2007 so we can hardly be so far behind the likes of Barca and Lisbon.

England also won the U/17 UEFA Championship a couple of years ago.

People come out with lot's of statements and neglect facts...

I remember Febian Brandy was outstanding in that tournament, really looked like he was over his ankle break, especially when he scored that sumptuous lob against Porto... Such a shame he didn't kick on, could have been a Utd and England regular.

that goal was quality goal alright. The weird thing about that tournament was one of our best players was Michael Barnes who's career just imploded really. Tough game career wise for some.

Molde beat Wolfsburg 3-1 at home in the first round. Playing Liverpool next week, also at home. Will be interesting to follow his tournament.

Anyone knows how they picked the teams to enter this?

I was talking to a Porto fan today who seemed a little pissed Porto wasnīt in this, considering theyīre the current u-19 portuguese champions.

Why is United not involved? Is it by a previous season's finish at the youth level?

Whatīs the format? Top 2 qualify and then 2 game knock-out?

I would love to see Sporting play Barcelona, hope they get to play eachother.

Can't find any info about the knock out stage on their web page, but that is the format that would make the most sense.

I'm hearing the wolfsburg / Molde draw means Liverpool have qualified. Will check later. Our reserves are getting better, Suso has finally re-discovered his magic. Can't wait for our next (meaningless to the) group game against Lisbon. Despite them outplaying us in the first game at Anfield we should still have got something from that thanks to a late second half wake up call.

Hopefully we're no longer star-struck.

Quarter-final line-ups:

Barcelona v Ajax
Aston Villa v Marseille
Tottenham v Liverpool
Sporting Lisbon v Inter Milan or FC Basel (probably Inter Milan)

The four group winners play at home, 2nd placed teams play away, with the matches played over just one leg.

Results since last update:

Aston Villa 1 - Marseille 2 (QF)
Sporting Clube de Portugal 0 - Inter Milan 1 (QF)
Spurs 1 - Liverpool 0 (QF)

Semi Finals:

Spurs v Barca or Ajax (Barca at home to Ajax in the remaining QF)
Inter Milan v Marseille

I don't know how it will be decided which will be the home teams in the semis.

Went to the match today, was a relatively muted performance compared to how we've been performing so far in this competition but Liverpool are a good team and we have a few of the old team out on loan now so to be expected.

Will be interesting to watch us against (probably) Barcelona youth.

Sterling looked good, until he got near our box, then he looked like an oaf.
