The circumstances are totally different.

Unfortunately, Liverpool are going nowhere in terms of the top 4. Alonso going will be a blow, but we don't know how their stand in will fair.

unlike madrid, city will spend big money on the defensive side of things as well. toure is not the end of their defensive deals. glad they don't have corluka anymore as it is another hole to still fill.

This is Liverpool we're talking about. Before last season, they were constantly just scraping 4th place, occasionally managing 3rd, and once finishing 5th. It's only because of last season people now see them as a safe bet to finish in the top 4 next season, which just isn't the case at all. Their squad isn't that impressive, and their manager perhaps less so. I see no reason why City can't finish ahead of them if City manage to gel and Liverpool have one of their poor seasons which they quite often have.

Realistically, they're not likely to have a poor season. They've got their spine and foundations in place. In Gerrard and Torres, they have one of the best pairings in the world.

There is no chance they'll finish below 4th.

So, you're not comparing us to our 05/06 team? But you sort of are?

Anyway, City, will not make the top 4.

Another thing is that if Benitez is a spacker, what does that make Hughes? He's incapable of doing well in the City hotseat, imo.

Neither of them are spackers, to be fair. I've always thought Benitez was a very good manager albeit with flaws like everyone. He ironed a few of those out in the last couple of seasons though.

How good Hughes will be remains to be seen-but he's doing the right thing in bringing in proven performers in this league, to establish them in the top 4 or 5, and then they will try kick on again. The City job is probably a poisoned chalice though, I don't expect them to tolerate even relative failure given their investment so far.

Hughes' track record suggests he builds strong and stable sides. At Blackburn, he finished in the top half consistantly after his fist season, with limited resources. Benitez is the opposite, he's built a reputation of building incredibly unstable sides. One season you look good, the next you don't - Take the 04/05 and 05/06 seasons for example, one utterly shit season in the league followed by a fairly strong one. The same happened in the 07/08 and 08/09 seasons.

I cant see Liverpool having as much luck with keeping players fit as they did last season. They've not really purchased much to push them much further. Johnson is a good signing but won't push them to winning the league.

With Arsenal & Liverpool not improving much in the transfer market as of yet, its not difficult for me to see that City could actually compete with those 2 if their side gels together.

The team above may be a bit too attack minded, but they shouldn't have a problem scoring goals at least. Whether Hughes will favour Robinho and Adebayor over Tevez, or whether he will use Robinho as a winger and try to fit Tevez and Adebayor in with him, I don't know. I do think the signing of Barry was the most important, though.
Tevez will definitely start for them - he will have got assurances over that when he signed, seeing as that was his main beef at United.

Which makes it interesting if he's shite.

Apparently, Eboue said his last goodbyes to Arsenal fans today after their pre-season friendly today. I've always liked him, it's a shame.

Luck with injuries? Is that the luck ensured Gerrard and Torres started... how many games together?

It was the luck that kept players like Kuyt and Benayoun injury free for the majority of the season. All in all, they didn't have the quality of squad depth last season & it doesn't look like they'll be improving anytime soon.

Benayoun isn't exactly a key player, infact he didn't feature much until the second half of the season. You're talking shit.

When Gerrard wasn't there he was the only player in that midfield who could push forward as some form of replacement. Fulham, Arsenal games were particular highlights for him. If he was injured they would have been fucked for a spark in that midfield.

However you seem to think Liverpool didn't have any luck last season. If you could highlight why, then i'm all ears.

He was possibly your biggest impact player last season. He scored some crucial goals at key moments.

I hope there's some irony in that post! Eboue is one of the most hateful players in the Premiership.

at Toure's "love of a woman" analogy during his press conference.

Now we know how Hughes has been managing to persuade all these players to join them.

I havent been feeling the best the last couple of days and I thought he was talking about Toure, which would have been fair game. But Eboue is a c*nt, just look at his kick-out on Modric last year.

Kolo explains City move

Manchester City defender Kolo Toure has explained his move to Eastlands by claiming former club Arsenal 'lost too many leaders'.
Toure was the last remaining member of Arsenal's legendary 'invincibles' squad, who went a whole season without being defeated in the league, but claims he now believes he stands a better chance of winning silverware with Mark Hughes' City.

"I came to Man City because when you look at Arsenal you see all the great players have left the club and are now in the past." Said Toure. "Look at what has happened there. Thierry Henry has gone, Patrick Vieira has gone, Ray Parlour has gone.

"These were the players that brought success to Arsenal and I believed it was right at this stage of my career to also move on.

"We lost too many leaders at Arsenal. When we were winning the league title the spirit was fantastic, we were like a band of brothers."

Arsenal's last major honour came in 2005 when they lifted the FA Cup, with boss Arsene Wenger under pressure to deliver the goods in the coming campaign.

Despite the high-profile departures of Toure and striker Emmanuel Adebayor the Gunners boss claims he is happy with his current squad and will not panic buy, punters who agree with the Frenchman may wish to use their free bet to back Arsenal to end their trophy drought this season.

"I feel we are strong enough but if we can add then we will do it," said Wenger earlier this week. "In England people think that all the problems can be sorted out by buying players."

Did anyone else hear Toure say money city in his press conference?

Something like 'I'm very happy to be here at money city, err I mean Man City...'.

I thought it was great.

Very unfortunate slip of the tongue.

He probably just missed out the 'Cit' part of City, and came out with 'Man-ey', followed by 'City'
