I'm sure your guy is happy with the Copa del Rey as the only thing he has to show for this season (if he even wins that without bottling another penalty).

Messi has had the better individual season just like he did last season. Simple as that, and that's why he'll pick up the Ballon D'or again.

Anyway, looks like the reverse of last season. One player has the La Liga title and the other has the Pichichi, as was pointed out to me many times last season, winning La Liga is a much bigger deal than scoring multiple goals against the cannon-folders of La Liga. Non?
the reverse of last season? how? ronaldo will win the champions league?

i think not!

We all saw in 2010 how ludicrous that award is, are you seriously telling me Messi had a better 2010 than Sneijder or Xavi?

When you-know-who went on a scoring spree after losing out on the title last season, most of you wrote it off as "meaningless". Funny how 1 year changes everything when the other guy has won the title.
Is this guy forgetting Ronaldo missed a penalty in the shootout between Madrid and Bayern. Or does that not count?

Seriously though, Cal, you should just stop looking at Messi as some rival to your loverboy the whole time and just appreciate what an awesome player he is.

72 goals in a season is incredible. He'll probably top it next year too.

I remember the days when Henry and RVN would get around 30ish goals. I though that was amazing. Then Ronaldo bagging 42 at United seemed impossible... 72 is out of this world.

One penalty miss directly resulted in elimination, the other one played a part but Madrid would probably have lost anyway with Kaka & Ramos missing too. Spot the difference.

Anyway, I just want to point out how ludicrous some of the people on this very thread sound creaming themselves over Messi's scoring record this season.

Exactly 12 months ago, I was repeatedly told scoring multiple goals against the lesser lights of La Liga meant fuck all once the title has gone, funny how 12 months changes everything? Now scoring 7 goals after Madrid has sealed the title is some kind of miracle?

This absolute determination to undermine Messi...it's impressive!

Can't understand it, though. Must admit, I'm pretty much what many would call a 'fanboy' for Messi...but it's understandable. Though Iniesta and Xavi are a delight to watch, I'll watch the Barcelona games just because he's playing. Although I want Barcelona to lose whenever they play, I sure as hell want to see Messi play well. He is a joy to watch, and we'll probably never see anyone like him again. To not enjoy watching him play (which you surely cannot do if you're so obsessed with pitting him against Ronaldo, or trying to undermine his performance) is to miss out on one of the greatest delights and joys in football minus anything to do with your own club, isn't it?

Again, that goal for his hattrick yesterday was absolutely mental. It was weird in that you knew he was going to pull it off, but it didn't make it any less ridiculous when it went in.

Please do explain why Messi scoring a load after Madrid have won the title this season is somehow so impressive compared to Ronaldo doing the same after Barca have won the title last season, which apparently "means fuck-all".

It shows the extent of your argument when you resort to penalties. I could make an argument for Darren Bent being better than Messi based in penalties. Ronaldo missed one for us in the CL final as well, very nearly cost us. He obviously bottles them when they mean the most.

Let's see, a penalty given during both games in the CL semi 2nd leg. Both, if scored, would put their team into a winning position in the tie.

One was scored, the other was missed.

Didn't say anything about Messi's scoring in context of anything, nor do I remember comparing him to Ronaldo.

I'm not going to either - I remember Hectic giving out pretty obvious warnings to anyone who did, so I'm keeping my mouth tightly shut here! What I will say, and it's obviously been said a million times, is that talking of Messi just in terms of goals is so reductive that it seems somewhat absurd. He could score half as many and still have a valid claim to being the greatest footballer of all time, I'm guessing.

Look at it however you want it Cal?(trophies won, penalties missed), Messi is a better player than Ronaldo as he has been for the last 4 years. It's the undeniable truth

I read somewhere Messi this season alone has scored more goals than Heskey "An England International Striker" in his whole career.

Is this true?

Messi is the only reason Barcelona went past Milan in the first place.

yes, messi missing the penalty that would have put them in the final game is worse than ronaldo missing the penalty that would have put them in the final game

you should know that when mourinho decides who will shoot -as most coaches- he puts his best shooters first and last, so the other shooters wont feel that much preasure

but there goes ronaldo and misses

and messi is scoring shitloads of goals after real madrid won la liga? real madrid won it this wednesday, so i don't know what you are talking about

and of the 72 goals messi scored this season, 16 (all time record) were in the champions league

Heskey has scored 100+ so it can't be true. He might have done so in 2 seasons though.

Start of Barca domination? Messi will be 25 this June, he was 21 at the beginning of the past four years, obviously we're going to pick that era.

Mess is part of Barca , it's not as if he should feel lucky to play for them. He's a key component of their last success in these last few years.
I can stoop to your stupid level of logic if you want, R.Madrid will have accomplished a better general season than Barca and yet Messi still manages to outclass and out perform you-know-who

Messi missed one that would put them in the final. Ronaldo had his saved that would have put them ahead in a shootout, but based on the fact that Kaka & Ramos missed soon after, they'd likely have gone out anyway.

If he scored, maybe the rest of the players would have been more confident with their own penaltys. Considering he was the first taker and all, always good to get off to the best possible start but no, he missed.

that's not true, you conveniently forget that bayern missed two penalties too

so even if we disregard the fact that ronaldo missing the first penalty had a huge impact in torres and kaka mental state, they would have been tied in penalties scored

it's not the first time you "conveniently" forget things

I really enjoyed their battle over the 4 games, it was great to watch. I'd say they were pretty even most of the time, but some of Messi's runs and assists in those games were unreal. Still remember that karate kick from Nesta and how he just accepted the yellow Class both of them.
