United's signings the past 10 years that cost less than 5 million generally turn out to be flops except VDS and Park even though those 2 can be described as bargains rather than value signings. Jury is still out on Lindegaard.

Arsenal managed to sign Van Persie for 3.5 million, I think that's the kind of impact Fergie hopes one of these value signings will end up having one day but so far he's not had much luck. In the £5-10 million bracket Fergie has brought in Vidic,Evra,Smalling and Hernandez so I think Fergie should stick to signing that kind of players that ultimately cost a few million more because that's usually because they have some proven quality.

Of course a £7,5 million Tosic proves there is no guarantees in that price racket either..

We need to stop taking punts and start buying quality.

Our punts have only been in areas where we already have quality like up front.

But I know what you mean.

I know, it's a piss take, whats the point of taking a
Punt when you could easily just sign Torres/Carroll/tevez for big money.

Good luck to him. We could all see after a little while that he probably wasn't gonna match the standards of our other strikers. Hope he has a good career at his new club.

So about 50 million spent, and we have Hernandez, Lindegaard, Park, Vidic, Evra and the twins still knocking around our first team.

Thank fuck we look for value. We've spent less on all of them than Chelsea did on Torres.

Have a look at Barca and real. Barca spent 80 million aggregate on 2 players that they sold in a year

Rather the flops we have then they have

My beef is not with us signing cheap punts, its the fact that a lot of them eventually aren't even championship level...Dong, division 2 in China!!

At the very least you can say Forlan, Howard, Smith and Heinze were quite good players, but most of the rest of those are just

Surely you would think for signings of £3 million and up a player would be good enough to play at least Championship level football to a decent level after leaving us, but some of those are utter flops who wouldn't set our reserves league alight.

I don't understand it, and i'd be fine if most of those went to forge careers in the lower leagues, but instead they end up at some sort of pub level.

Ok...i probably exaggerated, that list isn't so bad on second look, but its the worse of those flops that amaze me that they weren't even championship level, ie, Dong, Manucho, and Bebe.

Not always though do we. We should do the £10m+ bracket.

hmm, that will descend into a Berba debate though...

Vidic, Evra, Park, Hernandez, the Twins, (and probably Lindegaard) alone are worth the £48m loss, and pale in comparison to the laughable fees Chelsea and Liverpool paid for Torres and Carroll. Our strategy of buying cheaper ones has clearly been a success.

Yep. There have been some really odd ones in there though where the risk never seemed like it had any more than a 10% chance it would pay off. For the bargains we've found in the players you mentioned - plus VDS - it's not been a bad policy.

Wouldn't describe those three as "punts". All three were very well-known players. Not really comparable with the likes of Diouf and Tosic.

I liked this post, so I thought I'd highlight those players in Red that have either been good signings (in that they either did well for us / they were obviously a very good footballer ala Forlan / or we made a tidy profit) and Blued the ones who could widely be considered as outright failures (and, just to avoid controversy, we'll shove Bebe in)... the rest are just meh players.

All in all... these punts haven't been too bad really!

Anders Lindegaard - 5-7 million
Fabio Da Silva - 4-6 million
Rafael Da Silva - 4-6 million
Javier Hernandez - 20 million
Park Ji Sung - 4 million
Nemanja Vidic - 16-20 million
Tomasz Kuszczak - 2-3 million

55 million*

*Based upon my best guesses of the current value of the active players at United. I aimed low on most of the players but the outlaws, current worth and money that was received is about even. Unfortunately this does not take into account wages.

Yeah they were known but not to many of the transfer muppets in here. We plucked them out of not necessarily obscure, but definitely not mainstream sides to the surprise of many on here.

Mame Diouf completed the fastest sprint on the pitch in the Bundesliga this weekend with 34.67 km/h.

That's pretty fast.

I never mineded Diouf... he was 7th choice around here, but he went about his business of playing in the reserves and the Carling Cup without kicking up a fuss... which of course is probably part of the reason he's no longer a United player.

I hope he does well in Germany.

Also... I've just noticed that this is post 666 in this thread

Far from it. He didn't work out in the end, but he's simply a youth player who we spent a bit of money on and didn't deliver. There have been much bigger mistakes.
