Maradona, Dominating A World Cup Tournament

I just found two Maradona videos from the 86 world cup that highlight his dominance game by game. I suggest everyone to take a look at them since they are absolutely brilliant videos.

He basically went and won the cup for them

Something Ronaldo could be capable of for the Portugese one day

Even if the 'hand of God goal' had not been given I'm still not sure we'd have beaten them

If he'd been sent off for the handball, we'd have beaten them

Amazing player, debatably the best, but he's pretty much promoted diving unfortunately.

I think there is something in what Arsene Wenger said at the World Cup 2006 in that a generation of young players have grown up watching him thinking that cheating and diving is acceptable. Incredible player though.

Considering the amount of kicking that he got, I'm not really surprised that he resort to diving to be honest.

Not that I endorsed diving.

Cheers for the clips...brings back memories of a great world cup. Him with Burruchaga and Valdano feeding off his scraps won that cup.

In a way, Anderson, when he runs with the ball reminds me of Maradona...the way he keeps the ball so close and then flicks the ball at the last moment from the defender's leg into space and accelerates to get back in control. Also, the high left shoulder before he feints is uncannily similar, I think.

Inspirational player. Made me take up football as a teenager and play like him. Valdano and Burruchaga were excellent footballers too but did the right thing in letting Maradona run the show.

If Messi played in his days he'd be kicked out of the game. However, Maradona today, with the tackling rules now, would be even better!!

Which season? The stats here says he didn't. I'm not arguing with the last part though

I've watched the videos and DVD's of this World Cup that I have in my collection, literally hundreds of times. He was unbelievable at that tournament.

Jimmy Greaves made a comment a few years ago that I love when people talk about the greatest players ever: "Brazil could have won the World Cup without Pele, Argentina would never have won the 1986 World Cup without Maradona."

I know that doesn't guarantee Maradona's greatness over Pele or anything, but Diego was a very special talent and it is worth noting that whilst he wasn't surrounded by complete muck in that Argentina side, they weren't as good as Brazil's '58-'70 teams. Nor were they as good as Argentina's '78 side.

Well said. Teams would go out just to hurt him knowing if they stopped him, they stopped Argentina. Cameroon at Italia '90 being a good (and hilarious in fairness) example.

I've done a compilation of Maradona on YouTube, put it on there a couple of years ago. Shameless plug I know, but worth a look:

Cheers pal. I have the Italia '90 film, that's very good. I love the footage and shots they get for these, they're so unique.

I don't think so. It is not all about tackling. Defenders are stronger, faster, better technically equipped nowadays...so I would say it needs more ability to go round them like Messi is doing on constant base.

Messi is very close to Maradona's class (if he is not already there). But Maradona performed on the WC and hence his glorification.

Giggsy I suspect you are under 30 years old almost instantly.

Maradona carried whichever team he played for, most notably Napoli. He wasn't just a world cup wonder as you seem to believe.

Defenders are only fitter now because of a strict diet/training regime. What makes you think a young Maradona would not undergo the same diet/training regime? He was already strong as an ox then and he would be even stronger now. You speaketh rubbish mate.
