Exactly. He's injured but can still go to school, learn new skill, or (almost) do everything he wants to do, with that kind of money. And time is still on his side to start over.

Unless there's more than meet the eye.

£25k a week for 4 years adds up to more than £5m, probably around £3m to £3.5m after tax. Add that to whatever he had earned prior to getting that deal plus a signing on fee he got, which must add up to more than £1m, and you have a bloke in his mid-20s with more than £4m on his account. I'd say he won't have to do much for the rest of his life.

It depends on what he does with it. If he spends all day in the pub and/or bookies then he might have pissed it all up the wall.

Much too much, much too young!

If he's a typical footballer with a footballer's lifestyle and upkeep, a lot of that money will have been spent liberally over the duration of the contract.

Now, according to all the reports and rumours about him, he's more frivolous than the typical footballer, so unless he had or has some kind of kitty for his exploits, he's probably spent more than the average player would at the same age.

All comes down to how screwed on his head is with assets and finance, really... and on that score do you think he or the people that manage his funds have thought anything about the long-term?

I do think as long as he's secured some assets (house, car, etc) he's sorted for the majority of his life no matter what, but with his age and the way he seems to have led his life since being ravaged by the injuries it wouldn't be a surprise in any way if he ends up being a tragic story who we hear of being on the scrap heap in few years time.

From the little that was seen of him as an up-and-comer, he looked a talent. Can't be at all nice to have that taken away from you.

They seem to think he was on 40k a week, bloody hell. Youd have to try hard to throw that away. Over a five year deal thats probably about 6m after tax. He's basically won the lottery without needing to buy a ticket.

It's without a doubt him. I've seen him propping up far too many bars in Manchester over the last few years.

He looks unrecognisable in that picture, is insane. Out of interest where have you seen him?

1) How funny is it that the first time he is spotted in years, he is in a fast food restaurant?

2) How bad is it that City only released him after that picture came out? It's like they'd forgotten he was still on their books.

His lifestyle has involved clubs and casino binges...how much of that do you think is left?

How does that happen to a player in this day and age with team doctors, physios, team shrinks, sport scientists and dietitians etc?

The player doesn't give a flying fuck about his career.

Some people say 'too much too young' - I don't buy that; plenty of players have had far bigger contracts at that age and are model pros. It comes down to the individual.

I don't think they did; according to the Guardian article they offered him the severence package before Christmas, it's just that it's only now come to light, along with that picture of him.

So in fairness to City, I think they dropped him a while back but decided not to make it public.

Indeed. I'll admit that I don't know much about the injuries that has seemingly stopped him from playing as much as he wanted (only read what wiki had to offer) and while it's sad to see a talent wasted I do find it hard to feel sorry for him. If a couple of injuries and such was enough to completely take away his will to put in an effort to become something in football I don't want to think about what he'd be without the football skills. I hope for his sake that he saved up some money at least and can use that as a foundation to get on with life.

Oh come one seriously is it enough?

Maybe for a middle-class family.

Surely not a for a footballer or person who live a much much luxurious lifestyle.

I am not sure he has even got a mil left out of that.

You would be suprised how super fit players are now even at non league level. They are very fit, it isnt a case of someone slightly over weight can play for them, they need to be very fit.

He could easily essentially retire off a few million quid. Certainly can't see him ever working a day job in order to earn what he could easily earn in interest alone.

Sad. That's not injuries, that's what's going on between the ears.

Now we'll just be reading about him in the papers. "Former footballer arrested again...."

He needs to get himself in shape and issue a Hargreaves style fitness video combined with a Michael Owen style brochure.

Easy to think do when you see it rotten down, but he'll have spent money living - fast cars, big houses, holidays, watches, stuff for friends and family. Probably not a lot left, especially for a young lad who expects a career in the game.

That said, he might have a decent pension and they can draw it at 35 I think.

The main thing is though that if he had problems with the booze things could be much worse for him than losing his career.

Seems to have mockingly predicted his own downfall...

In five years time I’ll be…
Retired… no, hopefully playing regularly for City in the Premiership and playing for England.

Again the rest I agree with, I think it happens in a lot of industries now. In the same way as Xfactor contestants nearly all to a man go on about their desire for fame not the desire to be genuinley good at what they do, think with fame being so easy these day so many see it as a career option in itself.
Absolutely spot on sir.....its as if fame itself is the desired result rather than a byproduct of being genuinely good at anything. And young footballers are just as suceptable (sp?) to this as others.....Its X factor/Im a Z list nobody get me out of here "culture" and it sucks.

Ricky Gervais said something the other week about how they did a survey with school children and something ridiculous like 80% said they wanted to be 'famous'. Sums it all up really.

Thing is they should be saying things are totally mental but at least footballer or singing or fucking stuntman. Not just famous.

Also odd how the ones who do the least seem to be the most keen to call themselves celebrities. Kerry Katona being one.
