Nedved to retire...no more!
Nedved's set to retire
Juventus midfield veteran Pavel Nedved has hinted that he will announce his retirement within the next few days. With his contract in Turin expiring at the end of the season, the 35-year-old’s future has been unclear. While the former Lazio man remains an important performer for the Old Lady, it seems that he is ready to hang up his boots. “I will end the uncertainty very soon,” the Czech international said at a benefit dinner in Chivasso last night. “There comes a moment when it is right to say enough is enough because the head can’t keep doing it, even if the body can. “But this is the right time to leave the game, with Juventus back in Europe. At the start of the season I wouldn’t have believed that we could finish third, but it was an excellent campaign and a great achievement.” Nedved retired from international football after a friendly against Serbia in August 2006, but he has been urged to return to the Czech side for Euro 2008. “Several of my Czech teammates have called me to ask me to play and I can’t just say no right now. So I am thinking about it,” the Bianconeri hero concluded cryptically. __________________________ The best player that I have ever seen who is comfortable with both feet. Bought to replace Zidane, and replaced Zidane he did. Legend. |

Overrated a tad and before you slaughter me, he was a very very good player and had couple of brilliant season. But he was never as good as Figo or Giggs. And nowdays people listing him alonside likes of Zidane, Rivaldo, Ronaldo is just wrong.

On an aside didn't he have a really weird knee cap? I seem to remember reading that his patella was actually in 3 pieces which allowed him to do some crazy foot work. Can't remember where I read it though - must've been at least 6 years ago now. |

World Class Player. I will always remember that semi finals where Juventus Beat Madrid, awesome performance by Nedved. If ever there was a clone of Scholesly, Nedved came the closest

Better than Giggs, and on par with Figo, judged not only on technical ability, but also heart, character, leadership, defending, tracking back and having an amazing shot. The fulcrum of the Lazio, Juventus and Czech midfield, teams that played amazing football thanks in part to Pavel's qualities. Single-handedly mauled Barcelona in Nou Camp, then Real Madrid in Turin and was going to win the CL had it not been for that Mcmamamamaman cnut that deprived him of the final by diving in front of the ref. That year he was the best player in Europe, and he did win Ballon d'Or ( I believe). Absolutely world class player, though sometimes he went down too easily. |

I am sorry but anyone who thinks that Nedved was overrated knows absolutely nothing about football. Very consistent, technically brilliant, great heart, terrific engine, could play several roles within a team ethic and do each brilliantly. One of the best players to have played in Europe in the last 20 years.
A wonderful, wonderful player and only people clueless about the european game didn't know who he was and appreciate his talent during most of his career. |

There have been several players who are like that. He is overrated in the sense that he does not belong in the top most bracket with others in his generation where many people put him.

Whatever - English fans are notoriously ignorant about footballers/football outside the British isles. That's why they have a shock every time England falls flat on its arse usually at the QF stage. Nedved had a brilliant career with Lazio (scudetto, CWC), Juve (4 scudettos, 1 CL final) and Czech Rep (1 final, 1 semifinal in Euro 96/04). He was a key player, with Keanesque leadership qualities and winning mentality, a workrate that puts Giggs and Figo combined to shame, fantastic technical qualities, a powerful shot.... the guy had it all. He remained pretty humble through it all, stuck with Juve in Serie B even though he could walked to Inter/AC to name but two teams and was never a media whore. No need to belittle a true legend of the sport just becasue you haven't seen him enough play. |

I am not English. And I have seen him enough. But this is exactly what I am talking about. Someone does not think that he is the best winger of his generation and he is belittling him. Not once I have said, I don't rate him. |

Nevertheless, Nedved is a true legend of the modern game. For a truly great player, the combination of his professionalism, loyalty and unselfishness are really a rare gem in modern day football. As someone already said, he's the closest thing to Scholesy in the sense of being a true professional. The last time I felt this sad over a player's retirement was when Zidane finally retired two years ago. Legend. |
