Newcastle United reveal new stadium name

Newcastle United have announced their stadium will be known as the sportsdirect.com @ St James' Park Stadium for the immediate future.

The news comes after an announcement from owner Mike Ashley that the stadium sponsorship rights were up for offer from prospective businesses.

His company will occupy the space as a showcase for other potential sponsors.

More to follow.

Ashley in one of his less lucid moments.

Geordies, you have my sympathy. Not that most are going to use it.

With luck, you'll be rid of him by the middle of next summer.

Bloody hell, you couldn't make it up.

Ashley has to be the worst owner in the world by far.

I think all fans of football should boycott any company which wants to ruin the name of our clubs grounds, and give the owners who sells the name of it as much shit as possible.

The Glazers will be monitoring this story with interest.

That is the worst stadium name in the history of bad stadium names.
Reads like a bad and really long internet address. They could at least have had the decency to use tinyurl.com or something similar.

Sportsdirect.com (aka Mike Ashley) already has their name on the Gallowgate stand and now it will be extended throughout the club....seems an odd idea to me.

Wonder just how much Ashley/Sportsdirect.com are paying NUFC (aka Mike Ashley) for the priviledge.

Farce.

Agreed. It's slightly acceptable with ones that have always been named so like the JJB and the Reebok, but for Ashley to come in and give it that corporate tonguetwister, with SJP being one of the best and most recognisable stadiums in the country; I'm not too sure it'll go down well up here, especially considering his relationship with the fans.

Looking forward to hearing commentary from there though.

This naming lark is old news and the fans up here have been burning Ashley effigies for a couple of weeks over it.

Personally I think the club have come up with a clever way round the sensitive issue of re-naming by including the old name in any new name by way of XXXX @ St James' Park. However, the way it has been handled by the club is right up there with the best of farces.

I also couldn't give a toss what a ground is called - certainly I would always refer to Elland Road as Elland Road should it ever be renamed. As long as the money goes into the club who cares?!

I wonder if this will ever happen at OT, its got to be incredibly difficult to say no to the kind of revenue this would generate

I agree that it's probably a good idea if you are renaming to include the original stadium name, if it's had a previous name. I was just saying that considering Ashley's reputation, and the fact that SJP is a pretty reputed and historic stadium, that he's unlikely to win any fan favour over this. The effegies over this sum that up.

Agreed on the last paragraph that the stadium should be referred to by its proper title, or else some local term, but I think there is a kind of football culture being eroded by the likes of the Weston Homes Community Stadium. I guess that's just the business side of football in the modern day though.

Good post mate.

I'd hate it if they tried renaming OT to something stupid, but I still don't like the fact MA can rename SJP to make a bit of cash for himself.

I know we'd still call our clubs ground by their old name, but its not the point, it might be just a name but if you tolerate this what next, clubs? Manchester United Red Bulls

The Newcastle fans are well known for being the most passionate of supporters, and if MA gets away with this many other clubs will follow suit, the fans will just have to accept they're subordinate to the clubs they help build.

Ridiculous stuff

Their situation must surely demand further action from the fans ie, boycotting. Having a few pork bellied shoe waving fatties shout some offensive things during a game isn't going to do much.

I know our situation re rising ticket prices, but imagine the uproar groups like MUST and IMUSA would kick up if they tried to rename OT. The protests would make back nad fornt page headlines atleast, like when Glazer took over.

Ashley can do what the feck he likes because he owns the club....although I doubt the decision to sell the naming rights was just to pocket himself a few quid. The money raised will go into the club.

The Glazers have already discounted presentation rights for Old Trafford, there's simply not any value in it. Especially as they'd have to bin the presentation rights they have already sold (the Nike East Stand, the Hublot watches scoreboards, the Audi dug-outs, not to mention the occasional AIG Munich Memorial ).

Technically they aren't 'naming rights'. They are 'presentation rights'. You can't sell naming rights for a stadium that already has a name.

Until someone takes the name from Sporting Direct he's created a nice little tax shield for himself at 28%.

I don't think he's anywhere as near as bad as the Glazers or Hicks and Gillette.

He has put plenty of money in the club but has made some shoddy decisions mostly based on the advice and moaning of the club's idiotic fans.
