The official transfer comparison thread

After reading thread after thread where people give all kinds of random figures, argue about who has spent more during what peroid, who's owners have underinvested the most in their squads etc, I thought I'd start this thread so that it can be instantly consulted and put a stop to these repetitive, misinformed debates.

Often, people use Transfer League as the source for their arguments. There are a couple of problems with that: the fact that some transfers are missing; the fact that he seems to choose the fees he prefers and disregard others; the fact that so few transfers have any reliable source listed; finally, the fact that he uses the "official" season start and end dates when most people would consider any transfers that go through after the last match of the season count towards the following season.

I'll cover the whole of the Alex Ferguson era at United - 1986-present. Sales and purchases will all be included, some free transfers in and out and youth team promotions will not be included for sake of brevity. I do not have such good info for other clubs. The likes of Soccerbase are incomplete others such as Neil Brown's site have most transfers listed, but do not list the fees paid for some bizarre reason. Most clubs do not have fansites as well researched as LFC History, so comparing other clubs transfers over this period will be a difficult task. If anyone else wants to help out in this thread, that would be great.

Also, there are bound to be one or two mistakes in here, I'm typing this stuff out while looking after a baby and a toddler!

I haven't finished Chelsea's figures yet and I won't until the transfer window closes, what I can say so far is that the transfer of Anelka in January 2008 took Chelsea's premier league gross spending beyond £500 Million, Torres in January took the figure beyond £500 Million for post-2003 spending.

As it stands, Chelsea's spending is around £725 Million since 1992 - just under £600 Million of that since 2003.

They seem to pluck most of those figures out of the air though. No other sources back up 3.5m Euros being paid for Rodrigo Possebonfor example, so where do they get that from? I've already said why I used the figures I have used and have spent many hours researching United's transfers where they can be backed up with a reliable source. I have deliberately steered clear of sites that just list figures with nothing at all to back them up.

The difference is that my research for the United ones is available for everyone to see. 99% of the United transfers in this thread are linked to a reliable report from a good media source such as a BBC, Independent or Guardian report. They just post figures with no explanation of where they came from.

I've just done some tinkering with transfers comparisons and I used THIS site to get my figures. Might be 1m +- here and there so it's a rough numbers.

Why did you use that site though, Snow? All my figures are sourced and transparent, theirs are just plucked from thin air, very few of them sourced. I made this thread and researched it specifically because Transferleague were unreliable.

Because it doesn't matter if it's 27m or 26m. Fact is your sources don't have the exact figures either. The Rio money is a total guess. All that's know is that it should have been something over 30m but Leeds cashed out early so it's little less than that.

My point wasn't to show exact figures on specific transfers. That's easy to edit later on. It's to show the graphs and the greater picture on one page.

Transferleague has the simplest layout to copy. You don't have to search again and again. It's all there on 5 different pages.

It's very rare that you get specific figures like Torres 50m or Ronaldo 80m. There are so many appearance fees and goal fees and that sort of stuff.

Often, people use Transfer League as the source for their arguments. There are a couple of problems with that: the fact that some transfers are missing; the fact that he seems to choose the fees he prefers and disregard others; the fact that so few transfers have any reliable source listed; finally, the fact that he uses the "official" season start and end dates when most people would consider any transfers that go through after the last match of the season count towards the following season. The likes of Soccerbase are incomplete others such as Neil Brown's site have most transfers listed, but do not list the fees paid for some bizarre reason. Most clubs do not have fansites as well researched as LFC History, so comparing other clubs transfers over this period will be a difficult task. If anyone else wants to help out in this thread, that would be great. Also, there are bound to be one or two mistakes in here, I'm typing this stuff out while looking after a baby and a toddler!

Team Brian GB Baby Cameron loves X-Factor Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 16,056	I haven't finished Chelsea's figures yet and I won't until the transfer window closes, what I can say so far is that the transfer of Anelka in January 2008 took Chelsea's premier league gross spending beyond £500 Million, Torres in January took the figure beyond £500 Million for post-2003 spending. As it stands, Chelsea's spending is around £725 Million since 1992 - just under £600 Million of that since 2003.

No other sources back up 3.5m Euros being paid for Rodrigo Possebonfor example, so where do they get that from? I've already said why I used the figures I have used and have spent many hours researching United's transfers where they can be backed up with a reliable source. I have deliberately steered clear of sites that just list figures with nothing at all to back them up.
