Debate: Is Pele A Jinx?
This week crocked Milan star Ronaldo hit out at Pele after ‘The King’ predicted that he would never play football at the top level again. Carlo Garganese would like to know what is the worst prediction that Pele has ever made, and whether he really is a jinx… Whenever Pele’s name is mentioned, the first thing that comes to my mind is a character called Eddie Mush from the 1993 Robert de Niro film A Bronx Tale. Eddie Mush was referred to by the local mafia boss Sonny, and all of his crew, as something of a ‘jinx’. Whatever Mush said, the opposite would always happen. When Sonny and the guys went to the racetrack, they all put a bet on a horse called Kryptonite. The horse was miles ahead for the entire race, and everyone was counting their winnings until they turned and saw Eddie Mush screaming out the horse's name. They immediately ripped up their betting slips before the race ended - they had been ‘mushed’. Of course Kryptonite fell over right on the line, allowing all the other horses to overtake. This may be a strange analogy to make, but it seems this is exactly the same thing that happens whenever Pele opens his mouth. In the 2002 World Cup ‘The King’ predicted that Brazil would struggle to even to reach the knockout stages. Of course they went on to win the trophy. "I believe that Pele knows nothing about football,” Brazil’s World Cup winning coach that year Luiz Felipe Scolari famously said. “He has done nothing as a coach and all his analysis always turn out to be wrong. “If you want to win a title, you have to listen to Pele and then do the opposite." The 2002 World Cup was a bad year for Pele predictions. He said that Argentina and France would contest the final, but both exited the first round, the latter without scoring a goal. He also said China would progress from their pool, whilst hailing Ecuador as playing the best football in the world. Then of course there was the most hilarious of them all – the Nicky Butt quote. Pele labelled Butt, prior to Brazil’s quarter-final with England, as the best player of the World Cup. Given the fact that Korea/Japan was the most scandalous and shameful tournament in the history of football, this is quite possible, but seriously – Nicky Butt! Pele has actually made an even more amusing comment about England I must point out. He once hailed a 21-year-old Nicky Barmby as a future world class star. The Brazilian must have been ‘barmy’ to say that, sorry for the pun. Other Pele classics include his prediction that an African nation would win the World Cup before the year 2000, while he also said that Colombia would emerge victorious at USA 94. Yes you’ve guessed it, they went out first round, finishing bottom of their group. Ahead of this summer’s Euro 2008 I am urging any journalists from my beloved Italy not to ask Pele whether he thinks they can win the tournament, because if he says yes, then the Azzurri most certainly will have been “mushed”. http://www.goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=629045 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Many of you may have read that before but i thought i'd post it incase some hadnt like myself, as Pele is a fecking eeejit who has been consulted about various football matters including who should get the World Cup of 2010 - which of course went to South Africa - his preferred choice & many years ago said that even before the bidding began that these nations should be holding major tournaments, so he got his wish! Fair play to "big PHIL" Scolari for puttin that muppet in his place  |

He said Brown was the new Black but Navy Blue was the new Black that year incidently, so he was fucking wrong messing with the fashion industry like that aswell..... when will the madness ever end....
