Predicted league finish for Spurs this season.
Now that the Prem season is about to kick off, it's time for me to make my league prediction re. Spurs.
It would of course be easier to keep my head down and make a safe, conservative prediction - especially since the league disaster of Ramos and its effect on the last two seasons. But I prefer to stick my neck out and say what I really think (and after all, Master Storey has already been courageous enough to predict that Arsenal will win the title this year). So ... Upgrades so far compared to the start of last season: Harry instead of Ramos Palacios instead of Zokora Crouch, Keane and Defoe instead of Bent and Campbell Bassong instead of Rocha. Naughton instead of Gilberto/Gunter Cudicini instead of Cesar I'd say that Spurs have a significantly stronger squad than 12 months ago, with pretty good depth. Things may change before the window closes, but right now our 2nd XI might be something like: -------------- Cudicini ------- Hutton ---- Dawson - Bassong --- Bale Naughton - Bentley - Huddlestone - Dos Santos --------- Keane - Pavlyuchenko That's a reasonably decent team in its own right, one that could give plenty of Prem first XIs a run for their money. Our away form achilles-heel will improve IMO (our home form was good last season under Harry): partly because in some away games I imagine we'll play with just Crouch up front and a 5-man midfield. Crouch provides a good option to play in this formation - he can hold the ball up well on the ground and can win a large percentage of balls played into him in the air. Palacios adds steel to the midfield - with 4 other midfielders alongside him we wouldn't get easily over-run and players like Modric, Lennon and Jenas will have plenty of scope to get forward and be brought into play by Crouch. We may not win many more away games, but I think we'll be tougher to beat away and so will lose fewer. Our league performance under Harry last season - i.e excluding the first 8 games under Ramos - was 5th/6th place form (mostly achieved without having Defoe and Palacios available, nor Keane to a lesser extent). The squad has strengthened since then in terms of both first XI and cover-depth. Gomes, Modric and Pavlyuchenko are now much more acclimatised to English football and Pav might also benefit from having had this summer his first break from playing continuous football in more than 12 months). Gomes, after a shaky start last season, has since become much more solid and looks to be growing back towards the sort of form that gave him an excellent reputation at PSV. I think Modric in particular could well have an outstanding season. And we'll have no European games as distractions this time around. -------------- Gomes ------- Corluka ---- Woodgate - King --- Ekotto Lennon - Palacios - Jenas - Modric --------- Crouch - Defoe A strong first XI - again in my view: well balanced and experienced. The injury troubles of Woodgate and King are the main obvious problem, but King seems able to still turn out top-class performances for one game per week and Dawson/Bassong are reasonably able deputies. Yes, Spurs league form in between Jol and Harry dropped away badly (the Ramos era and its preceding effects on Jol). And yes, I know I predicted continued good things for Spurs when Ramos took over, even though I had wanted Jol to be kept. But even though we did win a trophy I was not expecting Ramos - and I doubt that many others were either - to be so utterly inept and unsuited to the Prem. But prior to Ramos we finished 5th twice in a row - and with managerial stability now restored there is a good chance IMO that our league performances can return to what they were under Jol, or perhaps even improve on that. Harry knows his onions. He knows the English game inside out. And now he's at the helm of the biggest club he's ever managed, with far more resources at his disposal than ever before. I'm confident he'll use those resources well. I'd also be surprised if he doesn't have one or two transfer moves still to make before the window closes. Villa look significantly weaker at the moment. Everton may well (?) lose Lescott, but will still be there or thereabouts. City will obviously improve, but it'll take time for it all to gel with them - and let's not forget that they finished below Spurs last season despite our worst-ever league start (just 2 points from our first 8 games). Prediction for Spurs: 5th place, with at least a chance for 4th, however small, if (a) one of the current top 4 has a bad season and/or (b) the chasing pack (Spurs, Everton, Man. City and Villa) all take a significant number of points away from the same one or two top 4 clubs. |

8th.
Top four to stay the same. Villa, Everton and City to finish ahead of Spuds. GS to be as wrong in his predictions about Spurs as he usually is. Tout ca change. |

I'm with Pogue on 8th.
You're not going to finish in the top four, Glaston. Not this season, possibly not ever. It's the hope that kills you. Stop with the hope. |

Sixth, and pushing for fifth. I also reckon you'll win one of the domestic cups.

i think 7th or 8th placed finish is your best bet especially with woodgate and king injured half the season and the strength and better organisation of everton and villa
i think your rivals for 7th or 8th will be city (if they get their act together and gel somewhat) and fulham who played some lovely stuff under hodgson spurs have a really big squad but out of the two squad you post there arent many player of top quality IMO - lennon looks world class when he makes a fool of evra twice a year but he cant cross, modric is a great little passer, keane was awful in his return to spurs and crouch is an average striker - defoe when on form can be lethal, woodgate and king are strong defenders when fit, gomez has his problems, huddlestone is unfit, bentley didnt work out last season ya never know tho - maybe villa will miss gareth barry, maybe young/agbonlahor will get injured everton are very hard to beat and if they can keep some strikers fit they will finish above you IMO |

Can't see Spurs getting 5th, let alone 4th!
Man City, Everton and Villa will fight you all the way for the 5th spot and while Spurs might finish above one of them, I doubt they'll finish above all 3. I think the best Spurs can finish is 6th, realistically speaking I reckon 7th is more likely. |

I think Villa could struggle having lost Barry, and Everton may well loose Lescot so if spurs get off to a good start they could easily get 6th. You never know with spurs though. I can see Defoe having a good season.

How did Crouch fare in away games last year?
I don't remember Pompey having a particularly good record away from home, so not sure how he's earmarked as the man to turn that around. |

You'd really have Defoe ahead of Keane?
Crouch and Keane make a good partnership, and there's a reason Defoe ended up on the bench under Jol. Spurs will probably finish 8th or 9th. |

I would, especially for home games in a 4-4-2. Defoe is quicker and could better latch onto flick-ons or lay-offs from Crouch - I also feel he's more liable to score more goals this season than Keane.
In some away games then maybe Keane would be better, because he's really a hybrid attacking midfielder-striker and would strengthen the midfield to some extent if we played 4-4-2 away in some games. |

Between 5th and 7th. I think the outcome of whether Lescott goes to City or stays at Everton could have an impact on the positions. I think if City get Lescott they may finish 5th and Everton 7th. I think Villa will finish 8th as they have weakened, no Barry and Laursen who were probably two of their three best players. Keeping King, and to a lesser extent Woodgate, fit will be crucial, but at least the recent signing of Bassong improves their options. But Spurs look strong in terms of their front six, Palacios looks a very good signing so far, they have good options up front now that Crouch has signed, and Modric is becoming very influential.

Villa won't finish above Spurs and won't do as well as they did last season because they have lost one of their best players and failed to replace him. More to the point they suffered because of a lack of squad depth last season and that hasn't been addressed.
Spurs I think will do well this season. Probably put them 6th, with City 5th and the usual Top 4. Once Redknapp came in last season and steadied the ship they did reasonably well and we're pretty consistent. Just don't play Bale and you'll have a good season. |

Ozzy Ardiles was on the radio this morning saying that he thinks Spurs could reach the top 4. Deluded...
Best Spurs can hope for is a top 6 finish (i.e. 5th or 6th) They're probably about as good as City/Everton/Villa so it would be a good scrap |

I think Glaston is so accustomed to his usual habitat, the muppet forum, that he can't bring himself to post anywhere else.
I'll go with the others, probably 8th. Certainly no higher than 7th. |

Bar any unfortunate turn of events like injuries or extensive bans, Modric will really come into his own this season. He will be there or there abouts in the end of the season awards. Lennon will be a threat but as always injuries and inconsistency will hamper his effectiveness. Palacios may very well end up becoming a target for the refs with his sometimes overzealous (dirty) play.
Their Achilles hill remains to be central defence and the left back position, regardless of what Glaston thinks of the likes of Bale and Ekotto. Positionally they just aren't there yet. I reckon Spurs could do well with getting a left winger and moving Modric in field to play just infront of a solid midfield two with Palacios doing the defensive duties, Jenas running around and him applying the mastery. A top six finish is a possibility for them. |
