Premier League - Mutu to pay Chelsea £9.5 million

Premier League - Mutu to pay Chelsea £9.5 million
Eurosport - Fri, 06 Jun 12:37:00 2008
A commission employed by FIFA to resolve a conflict between Chelsea and their former player Adrian Mutu has ruled that the Romanian international must pay the club 12 million euros (£9.56 million).

According to a report on the website of Mutu's current club Fiorentina, the commission ruled that Mutu must repay the Stamford Bridge club for revenues they claimed to have lost following his sacking for drugs use in 2004.

Chelsea signed Mutu for £15.8 million in the summer of 2003 but sacked him in October 2004 after he tested positive for cocaine after a drugs test.

The club estimated that the affair, which led to Mutu serving a seven-month ban, cost them £13 million in lost revenue.

Mutu, currently with the Romanian national team in Switzerland preparing for their Euro 2008 opener against France on June 9, is expected to appeal the decision, at a civil court. His lawyer told Romanian news channel Realitatea that Mutu would be doing so.

After serving his ban Mutu signed for Juventus before moving to Fiorentina where he has resurrected his career.

He will win the appeal and will end up paying a figure around 10% of that sum

The key point here is Chelsea didn't have to terminate his contract they made the choice to do that.

why would he have to pay anything because his employer terminated his contract? should they not have sent him to rehab?

Chelsea will at least try to recover the wages they paid him whilst he was banned

I actually support Chelsea in this. They sacked him and rightfully so. They shouldn't have to suffer the loss of transfer funds because of it. The club should have the power and not the player.

I wonder what that would do to Mutu's economy. I'm not sure if he can put up all that.

That's ridiculous. How in the hell did they calculate they lost 12M in REVENUE by getting rid of a player?? Where did they lose out? Did 12M worth of tickets not sell because people wanted to watch Mutu? Would they have won the Premiership by more than they did? Do they blame his abscence for not winning a Champion's League trophy?

And Cocaine is not exactly a Performance enhancing drug. Why not just send him to Rehab and get him back on the pitch?

Utter bullshit, and hopefully Chelsea won't see a dime of it.
