Red card penalties
I seem to spend quite a bit of time running Disciplinary Committees these days due to being 2IC of football at our local club. The thing that amazes me is how lenient the penalties are in top flight football in comparison to the local level.
For e.g if Mascherano had told one of our local refs to fuck off he would have been red carded the first time and the minimum penalty for foul and abusive to a ref is a 6 game ban. And that is out of a season that will only be between 18 and 21 games. One of our refs gave a player a yellow for hoofing the ball into the car park after the whistle because they lost. he player then told him to go fuck himself because he believed that he couldn't be booked after the whistle (read the rule dickhead) and when informed of this got seriously abusive and threatened to punch the ref. Sentence = 5 year ban. |

There is a massive consensus in Oz about the treatment of the referee/umpire in sport over here - my uncle is constantly berating me over decisions he sees in European football and the reactions of the players to the referee.
Even in sports such as rugby league where the players are huge and massively aggressive, when the ref calls a decision it is rarely contested and if it is, the tiny little ref will tell the six foot plus ogre to go away and it's pretty bizarre to see them just adhere to them without fuss. I believe it is natural for high level sport stars to be competitive and it's understandable some contest decisions in big games, but not to the extremities like dicks such as Mascherano and especially when you're a Sunday league player in the Blue Mountains after the match has finished..... |

It must be said though, have you ever seen a ref make a decision and then after being berrated by a player go "Hang on, wait you were right. My bad"? I have yet to see this and to be honest if I did I would lose respect for the man and try to get away with everything possible. If a decision goes against you get on with it. It's all part of the game.

In Sunday league you really need to be careful with what you say and how you act on the pitch as the suspensions are much much sevre than in the premier and surrounding leagues but i think they need to be to protect the referee's and players from idiots that are quick to cause trouble and theres quite a few of them.
We didnt have any red cards that i recall last season but quite a few teams playing us got reds at various stages, we aren't your every day 'bunch of meat heads looking for a fight' pub team though that you usually come up against. |

The local ref association hate us and we get treated far more harshly than other teams. We had a player given a straight red last Saturday for saying "it was in the goalies hands ref" when he gave a very dubious goal against us. No swearing, no anger, just the mildest disputing of a decision. Go figure.

Refs at the top level seem incapable of spotting a foul throw, whereas at non-league level (where I play) the officials are whistle-happy and cannot blow up enough for foul throws.

That really irks me cos I spend a lot of games at left back and I get one of these going against me a game. I found out that refs were giving them because I was trying to steal a few yards but instead of telling me why they were doing it they just gave the foul throw. What I do now is shout to the ref and ask if I'm ok to throw from here. Usually after 2 calls at him he'll just say get on with it and leave you be.

Yes he is part of an arbitrary panel used to advise refs on decisions regarding the severity of punishments. According to most united supporters though his influence is overrated so he clearly isn't making an impact on refs..........

As for the Mascerano incident - I would have booked him for the first tackle and then given him a straight red for telling me to fuck off. |

A couple of weeks ago I got an absolute shocker of a yellow card. I got hacked horribly bad and went down as I thought my foot had exploded. Play went on for a min before the ref pulled play up and ran 80 metres to see me. When he got to me on the ground he asked if I was ok to which I replied "I think he has broken my fucking ankle". Couple of mins later the coach helps carry me off the park but the ref stops me about a yard from the sideline to give me a yellow for dissent.
One of my mates got given 3 weeks for screaming out fuck when he snapped his Achilles the following week. |

The penalties should be greater for the Sunday League standard. Unlike a professional game, the referee has absolutely no protection whatsoever. He's getting paid little more beyond travel costs (I think it was £20 last time I played) so he's doing it for enjoyment. And the players aren't playing for a living. It's ok for a professional to break his leg (ahem), because they still get paid, and are given expert recouperation. The Sunday footballer can't afford to miss a week of work because some cunt did him
