I think it's a different being 'in it' and being 'around it'. I'm far from sure it works - I'd like to see England sort out the U17/19/21 business to get continuity of playing style, tournament experience and promotion to the main squad. Pearce is a fuckwit and he's not going to help deliver any of that.

We can play Baines on the left wing and have a much better outcome. In fact Cole - Baines would work a lot like Valencia's Mathieu and Alba combination. Solid no matter what and good coming forward with good balance and a player who can put a top cross in. |

And the really sad thing is - I actually won't be shocked if this side starts the first match. I'm wondering if there is some darker powers at work here - how does every single manager manage to do the same thing, which we've all seen fail time after time? |

You can't blame him. Never played at Euro, had a great season and a good professional. But who gets ahead!
There is the part about him playing continuous matches but when you look at some players in the team or even in standby then its hard not to feel dejected. I wonder Carrick will even announce his international retirement. no point whatsoever. |

I don't know what all the fuss is about though. England weren't going to get far anyway. |

Instead, we're getting the same players as always and, if his history is anything to go by, we're likely to be getting the old fashioned 4-4-2 as well. If he was going to bring in all these old farts, he could have at least asked Scholes back. What are the odds for a) England not qualifying from their group and b) not winning a game? |

And I'd still take Cleverley. He's fit now, and he's an intelligent player. He'll get up to speed with things faster than most. And he represents the kind of footballers in England need. Clever, technically sound and with an eye for a pass. |

As a tactician, he likes his wingers to stay wide. All the other players England have like to cut in. I'm assuming that's why he included Downing. |

Your assumption is they would. You have no proof. I'm just offering an alternative theory. Quote:
Cleverly simply hasn't been healthy enough this season to be included. That's not at all surprising. I wouldn't have taken him. I'm sure he'll get a look when this tournament is over. |

He's so obviously the best English central midfielder, who can play in a 2 man midfield, and probably the one best suited to international football. I'm constantly astounded that not only is he not an automatic starter, he is not even called up to the squad.

And why should Hodgson speak to the clubs? He has to speak to the player he wants and ask him whether he's available for selection and that's that. It's not the club's business. I agree that Cleverley isn't really an omission per say. It's just my preference that I'd take him. I think players like him are the ones England need to start moving towards. |

If that's the team roy can come up with, he lost my respect.
On the other side, I can't believe the likes of Capello, Sven, et al can't see that lampard, Gerrard, Terry, et al deserves to get benched. The dross they've shown 9 out of 10 games for England is bafling Take Gerrard our and even LFC is playing good. I suspect the likes of them are big bad bullies in the changing room. |

What's most concerning is not the uninspiring calibre of players that he's selected, but what that means in terms of the kind of football he intends to play. By snubbing those most suited to international football - Carrick, Scholes, Ferdinand - it's a clear signal that the lessons of 2008 and 2010 haven't been learned. While relying on Terry, Barry, Gerrard, Lampard and Carroll isn't going to produce anything like the type of football required to succeed at this level.

Of course he's a left back.
But Downing is a left back in England while the England squad goes to a tournament without him kind of player if ever I saw one. Sorry but a left winger who is a good crosser of the ball doesnt end the season with 0 assists. It does not happen and completely disproves the idea that he'd be taken as he's a better crosser than the other options. |

He's got some games, maybe not as many as hoped for. I think if Enrique continues his donkey form next season, we will see Glen move to the left to accodomate Kelly on the right. Makes little difference to Johnson really. Slightly less potent going forwards from the left, but he also seems slightly more positionally aware on the left. |

I feel sorry for Rio, he has had a few problems, and we know he sometimes needs recovery time, but I feel even more sorry for Carrick, is it only Fergie and the United fans who watch him regularly that appreciate what he actually does.
On the other hand, Rio, Carrick and Scholes will be fresh and raring to go for next season. |

Not sure if it's true but just saw this "Apparently he (Woy) said he looked at Chamberlain because of his performances against greats like Ambrosini and Pirlo.
Ambrosini didn't play against Arsenal and Pirlo was a Juve player. " |
