One of my heroes, absolutely adored this guy. RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUD! Hope he enjoys retirement, maybe we should bring him in to give advice to Welbeck and the others on finishing, just like old times

You know what, that just clicked with me. I hated him for his poxy celebration after he scored the penalty from Rooney's dive. Thought the celebration was WAY over the top from a simply penalty... But now I realise it was due to the miss in the 03/04 season.

Was so good to watch, whenever he got the ball in the box I expected a goal and most of the time it happened.
Looked and moved like a horse but could actually skin players given the opportunity. One of the most clinical finishers I've seen. His famous free kick movement too, worked a treat

The excitement when we (first / almost) signed him, and when it finally happened, was dangerous for teenage Me. That noise that followed him around almost immediately at Old Trafford will always remind me of him when it's used for other players now ("Ruuuuuuud").

A world-class player.
Some here are calling him a poacher, but that does him a disservice I think. Hernandez is a poacher, Van Nistelrooy had a lot more to his game than just goal-hanging. His hold up play was excellent, for instance. |

Remember his fist pump celebration against Real after the 3-1 goal?? That goes to everyone who doesn't consider us being the greatest and the most beautiful club ever.
10 years ago I couldn't watch PL matches but I would follow them on the TV-text. And when United did score, it read "van Nistelrooy xx" almost always. He was the type of a player I wish we had all the time. A constant threat for the opponent but also gives us time with the ball when the rest of the team is struggling. Simply put just a perfect striker. |

His hold up play was fantastic as well. I'll never forget the goal against Arsenal at highbury. THAT was the best title race I've seen. There was a magic about it that I haven't felt at any time this season. And that match at high bury was unforgettable. The link up for that goal and the chipped finish by Ruud was a thing of beauty.

Shame his time at the club didn't coincide with us winning the amount that his contribution deserved. Greatest European Cup performer without a winners medal? Brilliant memories nonetheless, I remember that Basel goal like it was yesterday.

Fantastic player who really deserved to win more trophies during his time here.
As for the poacher thing, well, while he might have become more of a stationary target towards the end of his career at Old Trafford which, in turn, made us a bit predictable, he was a fantastic all-round striker during his first 2 or 3 seasons with us. He had pace, mobility, could get involved in the build up or go long, worked hard for the team, had that knack of always being in the right place, and was obviously an absolutely lethal finisher. Like I said, it's a shame he didn't win more here but it's not as if he had a bad career is it? |
