Saturdays with only 3PM kick offs

Can someone explain to me why we now and again get these boring Saturdays with only 3PM matches?

It's ever since Sky won more of the packages.

They only tend to show 3 live games per weekend (Sat-Mon) this season whereas last season it used to be 4.

But should it be on TV? What about Champions League games

And we've had one such weekend already: TV Fixtures, and games moved for TV.

I don't get that. Surely the TV companies have paid for a set amount of matches and will do everything to make full use of that?

Why does it vary, is simply just because Sky decided there weren't enough interesting matches this round?

I'll never understand that thinking, but instead of arguing the toss over it, I'll just quote the last debate I had on this subject and save us all the trouble and time of me calling you all bonkers...

I don't really understand all the logic behind it. Just something I've noticed.

Last year there was usually 4 games per weekend. Sky then won more packages from ESPN. There are now usually 3.

This weekend there are 2 live games on Sunday and 1 on Monday (I think).

There needs to be more fairness to it. That is my only problem with it. For the group stages, all the European teams should play Saturday before, Europe midweek, Sunday after, then Carling Cup Wednesday, then Saturday again.

Something a bit similar should happen for the knock outs too.

But agree with Top, whats wrong with a 5:00 kickoff really?

To be honest I would Hate it to go back to every game at the same time.

Simply because I love watching football and the way it is now we get to see loads of games.

Anyways this weekend is almost standard apart from Saturday. We still get 3 normal live games and one on a stream (sadly that is Utd)

"We have sold our soul and we do not control our fixtures any more," Wenger told reporters.

"It is the truth. It is not normal that you can have a direct influence on the schedule through television."

Arsenal's first two games of 2012, a 2-1 league defeat at Fulham and a 1-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Leeds United, were screened Monday evenings.

Forthcoming league games against Swansea City and Manchester United will be played on a Sunday and the FA Cup tie with Aston Villa has been put back from Saturday January 28 to Sunday January 29.

The fourth-round clash with Villa will be televised on ESPN, causing Arsenal's league fixture with Bolton Wanderers the following Tuesday to be shifted to Wednesday.

"I believe the Premier League has to make sure there is a bit more fairness in the schedules," said Wenger.

"The Premier League has to decide what is fair and not fair. At the moment it is television that decides because the contracts are done in a way that is not right for the fairness of the competition.

"You cannot have decisive games with one team playing on Friday and then again Tuesday and another team Sunday and then Tuesday," the Frenchman added.

"That does not work. You can try and convince me that it is right but I can tell you from working in football for 30 years, it is not right because it is not fair."
Wenger today. It really does need a bit more fairness.

Ohhhhhhh, when I was a boy....all the football matches began at 3.00pm saturday, it meant no one knew what was going on to a certain extent..which meant when Fergie says, you just have to concentrate on what you are doing and not worry about the others...it really was the case.

They don't, ours are written in, in the expectation that we do well in the Champions League. The only time ours get moved about is due to us doing well in cup competitions, or an external event. And even if they did "coped fine" isn't true when we got knocked out of the Group Stage.

But seriously, it would help the English teams to get them more rest before and after European nights. Carling Cup games get almost an entire team change (and we are talking pre-semi final), so make them Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday

Spoiler
League Saturday
European Midweek
League Sunday
Carling Cup Wednesday
League Saturday
European Midweek
League Sunday.

And stick to that format making it very fair.

I remember in the midst of time, early 70's I think, didn't they used to show football on the TV on a Saturday afternoon but they had to stop it because of some campaign that nothing was getting done on Saturday afternoons because too many blokes were watching football & not going shopping with the wife or something? This was long before Sunday trading.

Or am I making this up? I was very young at the time.

Does anyone know what it was all about?

How much live games do Sky and ESPN have combined now?

Back in 2001-02, it was something like 170ish. Must be way more now.

And I do not blame fixture dates on our CL exit

I like to goto Old Trafford and watch the game at 3pm, then goto the pub afterwards and watch the afternoon game at 5'ish. Tomorrow I'm forced to goto the bishops blaise and listen to boilie. Although I don't mind the fella. Would prefer a 5pm city v spurs game or something.

I prefer it when games are at 3pm on a Saturday. There's nothing like leaving the football, going home, and hearing what all of the Premier League scores were. I hate it when there's only three or four on a Saturday afternoon.

Seriously, I'll never get this.

So those 2 seconds of pure joy you get form being told the scores are more exciting than getting to watch 2x90 minutes of intense Premier League football when we've got matches at 12.45 and 17.30?

Wenger is just echoing Fergie's thoughts from earlier this season:

Quote:
"When you shake hands with the devil you have to pay the price. Television is God at the moment," said Ferguson, who agreed that broadcasters had "too much power". "It shows itself quite clearly because when you see the fixture lists come out now, they can pick and choose whenever they want the top teams on television," he added.

"You get some ridiculous situations when you're playing on Wednesday night in Europe and then at lunchtime the following Saturday. You ask any manager if they would pick that themselves and there'd be absolutely no chance."
Sir Alex Ferguson claims football has sold soul to TV 'devil' | Football | The Guardian

Wenger's statement here...

Quote:
"You cannot have decisive games with one team playing on Friday and then again Tuesday and another team Sunday and then Tuesday," the Frenchman added.
... is (presumably) referring to the New Year fixtures. Liverpool played Newcastle on Friday then had four days rest before the Man City game. Whereas City played on the Sunday and had only two days off. Mancini also complained about this at the time. Not that it mattered, in the end...

Anyway, 3pm kick-offs are preferable for certain fans (y'know, the ones who actually attend the games). But pretty dull for those of us who don't (or can't).

Fair enough, I don't blame the fixtures for our CL exit either, but it is something I have thought for years, and something that Premier League managers have complained about for years.

Premier League teams do not get enough help in Europe.

For us, this Christmas Period has been far better than ones previously, we didn't play 30th Dec - 1st Jan

It is a little sad that I've become so used to the bastardized kick off times that a Saturday of 3's does seem a bit of an oddity.

It's now even a long time ago that Sky only had one 4pm Sunday game plus an occasional Monday night. That seemed perfect to me (although Monday night's aren't convenient for traveling fans I know) because it meant the games that were shown were likely to be the game of the week and have that special aura of being televised.

Now a televised football match is like the junkie's middle-of-the-afternoon hit, you barely feel it and just satisfies a kind of craving. I dunno actually, that could easily be a load of arse.

Also, part of the fun of a whole Saturday schedule was the fact that watching Granstand really was the highlight of my Saturday afternoons as a kid. Now it would just seem like a shitty diet where you deprive yourself of processed food and only eat what's naturally grown; pointless.

Nothing better than hearing the scores as you leave the ground. Then going home and waiting for MOTD.

Well, if MOTD was worth a shit maybe. I'd take Football First or whatever it is Sky were doing, over MOTD.

I think you're right, it must be a case of you guys not enjoying watching random football quite as much as those of us who love watching 5 games in a row on a Saturday.

I just find it hard to relate to that, I suppose.

You are a fucking small time idiot if you think your little joy of being a matchgoing fan (which is already a big fucking privilege in itself) "hearing the scores as you leave the stadium" should carry more weight than the millions of fans just loving football and wanting to see as much as possible live.
