He said: "If a white man insults a black man that's big, big news. If a black man insults a white man that's nothing, and it's expected.

"I think we should forget colour and … you know, it doesn't bother anybody. Sometimes a footballer, when they're playing at such a level, with the stress there is … if they call somebody white, if they call somebody black, you've just got to get on with it.

"You know, I think the players who come and complain, sometimes they are a little bit out of order.

"The game is a game, the game is a football game, whether you're white, black, pink, red, it doesn't matter. We're all equal and we all play football and we should get on with it."
What the fuck is he saying here? It's expected for black people to insult white people, what, always? Forget colour...it doesn't bother anyone, apart from the people it can offend, which is what spawned you to even comment in the first place you spastic. The people complaining about racist abuse are out of order?

What the fuck am I reading? This is just about the most ignorant, retarded statement on racism in football I've ever seen.

I think it's worth noting that Anton said that he understands that things can be said in the heat of battle people don't mean, and he would have accepted an apology. That is, before Terry decided to make up a story to cover his ass.

Apparently he's been seen in Stockwell going up to Latino people and saying, "I didn't call you a fucking wetback cunt, you know."

To be honest I always liked Dave Whelan, or certainly never minded him. He seems like a decent, honest bloke about football and you can see he's trying to make a stab at equality thinking, it's just a bit clunking and it's come out all bollocks.

It's that mindset that a lot of blunt old white men have, where they see the strides we've made towards racial equality, and so they think "OK, we're all good now." and they see black comedians building entire routines around silly things white people do* and they think "Well that's exactly what Bernard Manning was doing" and so they sort of imagine we've reached a point where everything's fair. Or that it should be because they've started to become mildly inconvenienced by it.

Which of course completely ignores the history, context, baggage and a lot of the personal emotion that derives from that (a white man simply wouldn't have any equatable reasons for being as insulted by the term white as a black man would by black) and plus there's a good old sprinkling of the "wer' in my day we 'ad to lick t'mortorway clean before breakfast" attitude in there too.

But it's not particularly mean or intolerant, it's just very one dimensional and...erm...black and white.

*which, if I'm honest, are starting to annoy me too. Not because I find them in any way offensive, but because anyone who still relies on them is clearly an awful fucking comedian with the imagination of a gnat.

Starting to annoy you? Black comedians playing on racial stereotypes stopped being funny after Richard Pryor.

True. Though I still reckon the better comedians could've gotten away with it until The Original Kings of Comedy came out. That was the nadir moment for me. 2 hours of white & black jokes interspersed with impressions of elderly female relatives. Welcome to the new millenium.

Yeah, but Dave Chapelle was/is on a different level to the dross you see today. Very little, if any, of the cliches you see amongst most of the mid level 'comedians' today.

It actually started with Ferdinand elbowing him in the back of the head when they both went for the ball in the air.

Is it still okay to hate those female comedians who think they're striking a blow for feminism by doing material about how shit men are and how they put their hands down their pants when they're watching tv?

The biggest problem with the so called 'PC brigade' it's a ready made excuse for people to be more racist, I feel.

It's basically a 'no comment'. Which is odd considering it his choice to release it.

Richard Herring put it well the other day, if it stood for Politeness and Courtesy (which is essentially what it does anyway tbh) would people still be as quick & fickle to claim it had gone maaaad?

That's a very good point...

Reminds me of a cartoon piece in a broadsheet, I forget which, where the KKK are lynching a black guy - the black guy says 'Is this because I'm Black?', to which the Archduke Grand Wizard of Mu Mu says 'here we go again, playing the race card'!!

Agreed. It's bloody annoying.

As for this John Terry incident, are the Chelsea fans really justifying Terry caling Anton a black cunt because of an elbow?

These are many of the same people who booed Wayne Bridge, for the heinous crime of...erm...having his kid's mum banged by their captain and not accepting it graciously.

Very disappointed with some of the reactions regarding the 2 racism accusations, then again I shouldn't really be expecting intelligence from people in football should I? I've heard people say that if a white player is abused no one would bat an eyelid. I've heard/read people saying black players should just 'get on with it'. I've read that people who can't prove racism should be punished. It worries me that such opinions exist and if anything it wouldn't surprise me if there was more racism in football then there appears to be.

In fairness, I get the sense that a lot of journos are hedging their bets on this one as they don't want to fall foul of the Chelsea and England captain. I get the impression they're more concerned by being on the outside of the tent should the charges against him not be substantiated than they are by the moral implications. Which says a lot about the journalism game, IMO.

Yeah, I did think the same, well Paul Smith did seem like he had an agenda. But as you said, most journos do.

Football is the most popular sport, and the most played sport in the World, and yet bar Justin Fashanu, we're still short on a top flight player, anywhere in the world whose willing to come out as gay. This is despite this happening in Rugby, Cricket, Basketball, and virtually every other sport nowadays. We've even got a Boxing champion who's openly admitted to cross dressing. And yet in the most popular and most played? Still zip. I think that says a hell of a lot about the culture of football inside football (and not just on the terraces) and how backward & neanderthal it probably is.
