Tiers of Greatness
I saw this list on another website. Personally I like this method of classification more than a numerical 1,2,3... ranking. Was wondering what the Caf thought about how they are/were ranked.

nicely presented but some laughable choices as always with these things.
giggs, the most succesful footballer in british football hstory, still performing incredibly at 39 is 4th tier behind litmanen, bergkamp, shevchenko and buffon to name just a few he shouldnt be behind. |

at least brwned. i think that some players, while undoubtedly brilliant players, have only been showcased to us at the top of their game. like year in year out we didnt see or hear of nedveds inconsistencies etc...because we see the likes of giggs every week we see him have bad games while foreign players have this enigma. kaka nedved raul pirlo eto'o, all players of the same era as giggs, he at the very least matches all of them.

Most contestable to me would be: Platini below Zidane - I'd probably have them the other way around, Rivaldo and Henry should be swapped, Carlos and Koeman are a bit high, the omission of Figueroa, and various others from the 40-60s. |

I've been thinking a lot about this recently, about players it feels completely wrong to criticize or it isn't socially acceptable to do so. Zidane, Maradonna, Pele, Messi...
I never thought Schmeical got that much recognition. Where is Van Der Sar? Edit - I see |

That is complete wank to be brutally honest, theres so many players in the wrong tiers. Law was clearly a much better player than almost all of the tier above him and Best surely should be in the top tier. Who made this fucking thing?

On the other hand, longevity often blurs reality about players... I don't think I'm wrong in saying that if most football fans nowadays are to be believed the likes of Maldini, Zanetti or Giggs never suffered a bad game in their careers, nevermind whole seasons where they were poor/underperformed. |

Surprised Van Der Sar's in there to be honest. Does that make him one of the six/seven best keepers of all time? Top six of his generation yes, but there's many more who are more worthy of a place in the pantheon. Hard to comment on those from previous eras as properly judging a keeper takes time, but from the last quarter of century or so Dasayev, Kahn, Filol, Pfaff and Preud'homme would surely be ahead.

I tried my top 4 tiers from the 50s onwards but it's pretty much impossible to do. Quote:

Best and Zidane should swap places.
Fachetti should be alongside Maldini IMO, and no Figueroa at all is bananas. Giggs should be higher, him and Scholes can't be separated IMO and Bergkamp and Henry should be lower. Zanetti being two tiers below R.Carlos is very strange too. |
