Tiers of Greatness

I saw this list on another website. Personally I like this method of classification more than a numerical 1,2,3... ranking. Was wondering what the Caf thought about how they are/were ranked.

It's revolutionary.

Definitely a much preferable way to numerical rankings to avoid all the pedantic arguments.

nicely presented but some laughable choices as always with these things.
giggs, the most succesful footballer in british football hstory, still performing incredibly at 39 is 4th tier behind litmanen, bergkamp, shevchenko and buffon to name just a few he shouldnt be behind.

I suspect that was made by an Arsenal fan in fairness, no-one else would put Henry alongside Best/van Basten/Platini.

I'd move fat Ronaldo down a tier and Iniesta up one

Where's Bale?

More seriously though, Iniesta's categorising is the most glaring mistake in my view.

Despite the inevitable subjectivity and nit picking, I'd say it's reasonably fair and accurate. Especially for these types of thing.

I agree. He's basically the modern version of Paco Gento and should be sat right alongside him there.

at least brwned. i think that some players, while undoubtedly brilliant players, have only been showcased to us at the top of their game. like year in year out we didnt see or hear of nedveds inconsistencies etc...because we see the likes of giggs every week we see him have bad games while foreign players have this enigma. kaka nedved raul pirlo eto'o, all players of the same era as giggs, he at the very least matches all of them.

I think it would be fine if it wasn't heavily biased towards the last 20 years. As it is, then you've got a case.

Most contestable to me would be: Platini below Zidane - I'd probably have them the other way around, Rivaldo and Henry should be swapped, Carlos and Koeman are a bit high, the omission of Figueroa, and various others from the 40-60s.

I've been thinking a lot about this recently, about players it feels completely wrong to criticize or it isn't socially acceptable to do so. Zidane, Maradonna, Pele, Messi...

I never thought Schmeical got that much recognition. Where is Van Der Sar?

Edit - I see

I think most of these lists are about peak form rather than longevity, that's why Giggs always seems to be lower than he should be and that's why the likes of Romario and Ronaldinho are in the second tier despite shining for a relatively short period.

Surprised no-one's mentioned Law in that last tier.

That is complete wank to be brutally honest, theres so many players in the wrong tiers. Law was clearly a much better player than almost all of the tier above him and Best surely should be in the top tier. Who made this fucking thing?

Yeah that's a strange one. He was good Effenberg, but never best-midfielder-in-the-world material, never mind Ballon D'Or-winning stature of the likes of Luis Suarez and Josef Masopust (missing from the list I think).

On the other hand, longevity often blurs reality about players... I don't think I'm wrong in saying that if most football fans nowadays are to be believed the likes of Maldini, Zanetti or Giggs never suffered a bad game in their careers, nevermind whole seasons where they were poor/underperformed.

Better than most such lists, despite the flaws - like Giggs and Best - I like the approach.

Suarez is there mate, same tier as Effenberg. There is a few from the all time thread that are missing. Pleased my man Passarella got in but Figueroa is an ommission and anto's favourite Facchetti.

Surprised Van Der Sar's in there to be honest. Does that make him one of the six/seven best keepers of all time? Top six of his generation yes, but there's many more who are more worthy of a place in the pantheon. Hard to comment on those from previous eras as properly judging a keeper takes time, but from the last quarter of century or so Dasayev, Kahn, Filol, Pfaff and Preud'homme would surely be ahead.

That's also true. Though I think that's just the mystique of greatness anyway, the way Baresi's spoken about you'd think he never put a foot wrong. They never saw him up against Vieri I take it...

I tried my top 4 tiers from the 50s onwards but it's pretty much impossible to do.

Would have Zidane a tier lower, though he'd be one of the best in that tier.

Edit: Actually there are a few players in the second tier I'd guess were better than him. Definitely second tier.

Best and Zidane should swap places.

Fachetti should be alongside Maldini IMO, and no Figueroa at all is bananas.

Giggs should be higher, him and Scholes can't be separated IMO and Bergkamp and Henry should be lower.

Zanetti being two tiers below R.Carlos is very strange too.
