The Sky Sports roundup of friendlies yesterday:
"Totttenham earned a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Benfica, while Birmingham rallied to beat MK Dons 3-2. Harry Redknapp's men bounced back from their recent defeat to Villarreal with an impressive 1-0 success over Portuguese champions Benfica at the Estadio da Luz. Gareth Bale scored the only goal of the game on 55 minutes after being played through on goal by a superb flick from Giovanni dos Santos. Spurs wrap up their pre-season preparations with a clash against Fiorentina this weekend. Birmingham came from two goals down to beat League One outfit MK Dons. Jermaine Easter gave MK Dons an early lead from the penalty spot before James McFadden missed the chance to draw Birmingham when he hit his spot-kick against the post. Jabo Ibehre added a second for MK Dons three minutes after the break, but Cameron Jerome replied for Birmingham with a clinical brace. Garry O'Connor grabbed the winner for the Blues with a late deflected effort to maintain their unbeaten run in pre-season. West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw by League Two outfit Southend at Roots Hall. Alessandro Diamanti gave West Ham the lead early in the second half with a looping shot, but Anthony Grant replied for the home side soon after. Wolves proved too strong for SPL side Hearts with a 2-0 win at Tynecastle. Greg Halford gave Wolves the perfect start with the opener from a fine free-kick after just four minutes. Halford turned creator for Wolves's second goal on 18 minutes when his long throw was headed home by Stephen Ward. Stoke continued their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 victory at Bristol Rovers. Tuncay Sanli gave Stoke the lead five minutes before the break, but Dominic Blizzard drew Rovers level on 43 minutes. However, Stoke netted the winner right on the stroke of half-time with Ricardo Fuller finding the net. Rob Hulse staked his claim for a place in the Derby team for the Championship opener at Leeds on Saturday after scoring in the 1-1 draw at Belper Town. Hulse earned the Rams a draw by cancelling out Chris Wood's sixth-minute opener with a header from Luke Garton's cross. Charlie Austin marked his return to Poole with a brace a Swindon posted a 4-2 victory. Austin, who netted 20 goals as the Robins made the League One play-offs last season, took just eight minutes to open the scoring, capitalising on some poor defending by Lamin Dibba. Alan O'Brien, Austin and Billy Bodin added further strikes before half-time while Carl Preston and Chris Smith scored consolation goals for the non-league hosts. Aberdeen left it late to salvage a 2-2 draw against Brechin with Andrew Considine equalising against the Second Division side in the last minute. Dundee United enjoyed a 4-1 victory at Forfar with David Goodwillie claiming a double. Forfar took an early lead before Price Buaben equalised after a quarter of an hour. Andis Shala put the Terrors ahead before Goodwillie rounded off a solo run with a goal after 68 minutes and the same player got his second three minutes later. St Mirren rounded off their tour of Northern Ireland with a 1-1 draw against Derry City. The visitors went ahead through Craig Dargo when he produced a clever finish, lobbing goalkeeper Eugene Ferry. Derry levelled in the second half when Danny Lafferty thumped the ball home following a good block by Paul Gallacher. Scunthorpe lifted the Lincolnshire Senior Cup for the fourth successive year by beating Grimsby 4-3 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes at Glanford Park. Adam Boyes fired Scunthorpe in front after just three minutes, but Grimsby hit back just four minutes later through Michael Leary. Dwayne Samuels and Lee Ridley missed in the shoot-out for the Mariners with Andrew Wright, Michael Collins, Rory Coleman and Matt Godden making no mistake for the Iron. Australian defender Trent McClenahan, who has been handed a trial by Scunthorpe, took part in the game. A young Liverpool XI got the better of Tranmere in the League One side's final pre-season game running out 2-0 winners at Prenton Park. An inexperienced Arsenal XI eased to a 3-0 win at Boreham Wood. Mark Randall set Arsenal on their way after just two minutes and Benik Afobe added a second on 42 minutes before Ryan Moran's late own goal completed the scoring. David McNamara's own goal and a David Amoo strike were enough to see off Les Parry's side. Leeds eased to a 5-0 win over Wakefield as they warmed up for this weekend's Championship opener with Derby. Youngster Dominic Poleon set Leeds on their way with the opener in the first half before Andy Robinson and Davide Somma netted further goals. Two own goals from Wakefield completed the rout for an under-strength Leeds line-up. Preston trialist Patrick Dimbala did his chances of winning a move to Deepdale no harm at all with both goals in the 2-0 win at Northwich Victoria. Leyton Orient completed their pre-season schedule with a 2-2 draw against Dartford. All the goals came in the second half with George Porter and Harry Beautyman twice giving Orient the lead only for the Blue Square South side to hit back through Carl Rook and Danny Harris. Walsall were held to a goalless draw at Rushall Olympic. Bradford ended their pre-season schedule with a 4-0 victory over Bradford Park Avenue at Valley Parade. Goals from Steve Williams, on-loan Stoke striker Louis Moult, Gareth Evans and Scott Neilson gave Peter Taylor's side a comfortable win. Cheltenham fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat to Bishops Cleeve with Josh Klein-Davies netting for the League Two side." I actually managed to briefly forget about the United match tonight and accepted an offer to go to this match. Was okay. Rodwell, Coleman and newboy Magaye Gueye were impressive, (scouse) Everton won 2-0 goals from Beckford and Bilyaletdinov. Phil Neville overtook us in his BMW on the M62 and all. |
