Top Ten Center Backs

I'm not going to throw out a guess, I don't watch enough non-United football.

And by all means, if you can't get to ten, then go as far as you can.

But if you watch enough football to think you know who the top center back is, then surely you can name ten of them!

From the leagues that i watch:

Ferdinand, Vidic, Kompany, Dante, Badstuber, Hummels, T Silva, Ramos, Piqué. Not sure who i'd put 10th. Considering Subotic, Pepe and Evans. Nastasic and Varane a year or 2 away. Need to see a bit more of Vertonghen. Fuck it, i'll go with Evans.

I think CBs are hardest to judge, thus I can't produce a list. However Dante and Varane have been particularly impressive. Hummels on the other side has a rather mediocre year, way too many sloppy games from him. Maybe that month without matches (currently injured) will help him regain focus. Subotic has shown improvement this seaason and he's a decent CB, but I don't think he stands out. Nastasic looked promising in the couple of matches I saw him play.

Great center backs are truly scarce if Sergio Ramos is one of the five best.

To be fair, that's probably a good list on the Top 10

Although as always, it's a year behind

You could quibble with the rankings, but this is a pretty good top 10. It's way too early in his career to put him in a world top 10 list, but I've been really, really impressed with Raphael Varane.

#1 CB on the planet? I can't argue with Nemanja Vidic.

Interesting how many people rate Varane as one of the best CBs in the world after a couple of performances.

Interesting how Dante has made the list. He has looked impressive in Germany and has been an absolute bargain for Bayern, but top 10 in the world? Not for me.

Bonucci has been the standout defender for Juve this season, by the way.

Vidic isn't even the best CB at Manchester United, let alone the planet.

That's certainly debatable

Taking his injuries aside and based on the admittedly sporadic games he's played he's been our most consistently good defender this year

Based purely on Rio and Evans being slightly shaky early on in the season

It would be great to build vidic up to a point where he's able to play week in week out

Dire at the moment, most of those top ten are not even at their physical peak and the ones who are like Ramos, don't hold a candle to the greats of the past.

Aye, wouldn't agree with him being in it right now. If you stretched it to a top 20 he'd be in there though, and with the state of CB's at the moment (there aren't any right now who i'd consider to be at the heights of Vidic a couple of years ago) he's pretty close and within the next year or two he could break into it. He definitely has the most potential to be the best out of any CB i've seen.

It's not a good sign for the quality of the center backs today that Vidic is still considered for this after how long he's been out and how little he's played.

I'd definitely include him though, he's been extremely impressive since his return and is probably the biggest factor in our defense improving this season.

Why are people rating so highly Hummels? Has anyone who rated him highly watched anything of him this year?

And Vidic, why the hell has he been included in top 10 in the world, when this season (albeit through injury) Ferdinand has clearly been preferrred, to be the best CB in the world, surely you still have to be unprecidented number 1 CB for your club?

And several people commented on the FM list saying

Fwiw Atletico have the best defence in spain where Barcelona concede every game almost. Puyol should be nowhere near these lists anymore. He's barely ever fit and when he does play he's a shadow of his former self.

Only in terms of goals conceded, I agree with your point about Puyol, I was expecting some idiot to throw Abidal in and claim to have seen him last week That and Miranda for Athletico is really having a desent season next to that younger CB they bought at the beginning of the season, can't think of his name...

Ferdinand hasn't been preferred, he just hasn't been out/unfit due to a serious long term injury. By your logic, Evans>vidic, which is laughable.

As for him being out affecting his ranking, I disagree. If Ronaldo or iniesta have an injury ravaged year or so, they wouldn't suddenly stopped being among the best. Unless of course after they come back they clearly are the best (which can obv still prove to be the case with vidic)

I would currently say that Evans form > Vidic, yes and that's not laughable, I appreciate there is a difference between form and ability, but the ability that saw vidic heralded as the world's best was for his FORM of 3 years ago.

And I feel you could have used a better example to help yourself as when Ronaldo/Iniesta come back from injury, they command instantly a spot in the first XI, Vidic hasn't, largely due to the fact they are being very careful with him, if next season he gets a desent amount of games and performs to the level we know he can, then he can be fairly considered in the top 10 CB's, but without playing I don't see how you can be a top CB personally... for me, these things go more on form... look at Dante

He's played 37 games this season and has 20 clean sheets... in those 37 games, he's played the full game 36 times. From those 27 games, Bayern have won 29 of them, drawn 4 and lost 4. He has been a revelation really for Bayern. Awesome signing.
