Venables lays into Berbatov

Quote:
Former Tottenham manager Terry Venables has laid the blame for the club's poor start to the season squarely at Dimitar Berbatov's door.

Venables claims the Bulgarian's 'poisonous presence' at the beginning of the campaign has unsettled the whole squad.

Berbatov started the season at White Hart Lane but made clear his desire to realise a 'dream' move to current club Manchester United.

Speculation over Berbatov's future dominated Spurs' early matches as manager Juande Ramos wrestled with whether or not to select the striker, who eventually signed for the Red Devils in a £30million deal on transfer deadline day

Spurs are rooted to the bottom of the table after making their worst ever start to a Premier League season and Ramos is finding himself under increasing pressure.

But Venables, who last week turned down the chance to return to top-flight management with Newcastle, believes the club's current strife stems from Berbatov.

"Berbatov kept telling us he had 'a dream'. Well, good for you Dimi. You had a dream with a few extra noughts added to your bank balance," Venables told The Sun."But did Spurs have a dream too? You got your way but your poisonous presence at the start of the season - the brooding and the reluctance to play - has cost the club that believed in you."

Venables also believes the Spurs board made a mistake in selling Berbatov's strike partner Robbie Keane to Liverpool before they had a replacement.

"They thought they were going to get Andrei Arshavin," added Venables."This was a massive managerial blunder by Spurs, especially when they had allowed Keane to leave. But letting Berbatov and Keane go without having Arshavin in the bag was a boardroom blunder."

Easy way out is to blame someone who isn't there anymore. Its nothing to do with Ramos and his non existent midfield. Honest.

Hang on, they sell Defoe, Keane and Berbatov, and decide to keep Bent.

Now they are saying that because Bent and Pavluchenko play in a very similar way, apparently they can't play together!

Why does he indicate that Berbatov moved to United because of money? City offered almost twice as much as United in wages.

In fairness Venables is just trying to get noticed to promote his career in journalism. A few days ago was the massive back page headine `why I said no to Newcastle`, I mean as if we didnt know why he said no and funny how the other 35 managers that said no to the job didnt feel a need to blab their mouths off all over the back pages as to why they said no and I am sure money hungry Venables would have taken the job for 4 weeks if he felt the money was right so he is full of it. He never seems to say anything of substance really

The drip does not want to point the finger at Levy. That man was the sole culprit in the Berb saga. Ramos had indicated weeks before the deadline that the problem should be sorted out forthwith. But Levy kept dragging the issue, for a couple of million more. Now when they are in the oven, they are looking out for a scapegoat. Serves them right. They got their extra couple of millions, but they stand to lose much more as the season progresses.

The person at fault is Levy, he knew he was going to have to sell Berbatov but he tried to be the big man saying no to Utd and left his coach with no time to get a replacement in, instead of letting him go and signing someone of similar quality

Venables had a short spell as England manager where it went well ( Euro 96 )
and he left England due to his dodgy dealings
He was never a great manager and was lucky to have an in form Shearer and Gascoigne available to him at that time
Probably the most overated second hand car salesman to be involved in football

True, and I think the fact that England were on home soil with the likes of Shearer, Gascoine, Sheringham, Pearce to name a few was the major factor of success in that tournament. Take Euro 96 out of his career and Venables has done nothing really of note. He is at about the same Managerial level as McClaren

I'm finding it all quite funny...Spurs screwed again.

FFS - should have beaten Hull.

Sounds like he's after a caretaker role in a spot not too far away.

They should have just sold him before the season started instead of keeping an unhappy player, and used the 50 million from Berbatov and Keane to get Arshavin instead of arguing over a few million.

Maybe when they play them NEXT Sunday they will, I hope not
Are you living in the future, if so can you PMS next Saturdays lottery numbers
Although you would have expected Arsenal to beat Hull instead of losing 2-1

Thats one of the rumours going around.

Unless they go out of Europe on Thursday I think Ramos will be there a while longer.

It's not Berbatov's fault that Spurs decided to cling onto him until the last minute in the hope of securing an extra few million, and ended up replacing him with Frazer Campbell.

The irony of accusing him of putting his financial interests before what's best for the team, when in fact, that's exactly what Spurs ended up being guilty of.

F*ck Venables.

Spurs are the ones who played hardball, and all the time everybody knew Berba would end up at United.

If they'd sold him to us earlier, they'd have got the cash and could invested in players the needed (like a solid midfielder who'll win the ball).

Shouldn't be too long before Ramos is sacked

Blame Levy. His stubborness cost them valuable time to find the right players while the transfer window was open. They could even have got Arshavin in if they hadnt waited so long to sell us Berbatov. Levy might have got a better deal in the end but at what cost? A poor season.
