Xherdan Shaqiri

Worth a thread I think. Could be a future star - had another good game at the top level this week, against Bayern. He played well against England recently too and scored a pretty good goal.

Highly touted prospect worth keeping an eye on.

Apparently the scousers are interested in him, although I doubt he'd be interested in them, and are reputed to be trying to do a deal for him in the Jan window.

Just a shame no one can pronounce it correctly.

It's actually pronounced 'Jer-dan Sha-chi-ri'

Which makes it even cooler really.

Just some details about him for those of us who don't know much about him:

Xherdan Shaqiri

Xherdan Shaqiri Personal information
Full name Xherdan Shaqiri
Date of birth 10 October 1991 (1991-10-10) (age 18)
Place of birth Gnjilane, Yugoslavia
Height 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in)
Playing position Winger
Club: Basel
Number 17

Xherdan Shaqiri (Serbo-Croat: Džerdan Šaćiri) (born 10 October 1991) is a Swiss footballer of Kosovan-Albanian descent who currently plays as a midfielder for FC Basel in the Swiss Super League as well as the Swiss national team.

Early life and career
Shaqiri was born in Gnjilane, SFR Yugoslavia (now Kosovo). He moved to Basel, Switzerland as a child and played for SV Augst and FC Basel's youth team. While on Basel's youth team, he played in the Under-15 Nike Cup 2007 and was named the best player of the tournament, and, despite having several other clubs attempting to sign him, he decided to stay with Basel. Just two years later, Shaqiri signed his first professional contract with Basel on 2 January 2009. The contract will keep him at St. Jakob-Park until January 2011.[1] He made his Basel debut as a substitute in the Basel's season opening game of the 2009–10 season against FC St. Gallen on 12 July 2009, at the AFG Arena.[2] On 9 November, he scored his first goal for Basel in a 4–1 win over Neuchâtel Xamax at home.[3]

In 2010 the young skillful player was linked with Liverpool, and the English club are believed to be closing in to signing the player in the next transfer windo

International career
Shaqiri was a surprise call-up for the Swiss national team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He scored his first international goal against England in the Euro 2012 qualifiers in a 3-1 defeat, a scorching left footer to the top left corner of the goal. Many regard him as the future of Swiss football.

We're being linked with an exciting 18 year old with lots of flair?

Well I won't be laying any money on it actually happening.

I doubt it, maybe an extremely distant relative but Shaqiri is a fairly common surname.

Was very pissed that Hitzfeld took so long to put him into the match against Honduras in the WC - that team blatantly needed some creativity and flair. I think this kid is definitely someone worth watching - apparently impressed against Bayern last night as well.

And that really is a fantastic name.

Looks like a very bright talent. Will be in the CL with Basel next season. That if he doesn't get sold in the summer, which wouldn't be surprising.

Was looking forward to seeing him start this time after his performance against England before but he seemed to be a highlights player and nothing else.

Just scored a great goal. There was a lot of talk in the papers in Switzerland that United will be buying him. Wonder if it's true.

I was in Switzerland for the last 2 weeks and last week there were a couple of papers saying that United are really interested in him. Most of it was in German so it was difficult to understand but it was also on their news channels. Might just be rumors though.

Interesting, your absence over the recent muppet period has been noticed. Shaqiri looks like one of those great little chunky low center of gravity fellas, and we could do with one of them, but he has quite a lot of development to do from what I have seen.

That's good to hear

It's been hard missing out on the muppet week but I've tried to keep up once a day but didn't post.

Oh and it was strange coincidence that the day I heard about this Shaqiri to United story, I was outside the FC Basel stadium. It's a sign, he's coming!

He was one of Martin Tyler's 5 to watch at this tournament

The other 4 were De Gea (who apparently goal keeping experts have said he could be the best keeper of his generation), Mata, Thiago & some striker who plays for the Czech's and used to be at Spurs

I have not seen a paper linking him to utd here. Hes a top talent but remains to be seen if hes also good enough for united.

I have two papers with me which ran the story. There was a lot of "Alex Ferguson", "Manchester" and "Shaqiri" in the story.
