ALL your Pc Problems

Ask away. If we keep this sticky, it will serve as a ready reference for anyone who gets a problem that might have been dealt with.

won't it get confusing who people are answering the problems to as there will probably be more than one problem going at the same time. People will have to quote each one

Okay lemme start off...

My Win XP laptop is constantly running on 100%...and the laptop keeps turning off if I run a Norton Anti-virus scan, or ad-ware scan or anything like that. It just sits on the usual 1-10% until I start any program, and suddenly it eats up 100% of my CPU processing...

Melv: It depends on where you download from.

I downloaded WinRAR this morning at about 250k/sec, and then I downloaded some video files later at only about 15-20k/sec.

If yuo only get that speed everywhere you download, then try contacting your ISP..

spyware could do that. it also affects general spped of the computer as well. If you haven't already, go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and download adaware. it'll take care of all spyware on your PC..

Then you should have no worries about the spyware. If it's not spyware, and that's the constant speed, I'd suggest contating your ISP about it. It might come down to the fact that you're a ways away from their main servers, or you could be on a shared connection with other people around you (if there are)

Try also opening up your task manager (press CTRL,ALT and Delete together) and click the processes tab to see which programs are running.

i think he knows about task manager coz if he doesn't, i doubt he'll be able to know how much percentage of the processing the programmes he's running are using..

but norton and adaware does use up a lot of cpu processing..i tried usind avg and it's always only about 5-10%

winamp can be a problem also..after running for a lengthy period, it eats up to 100%

The caution is that one might inadvertently delete programs which affect the running of the computer.

I wonder whether, at the bottom of the 'processes' tab, there is a 'system idle process' which should always be in the nineties under 'CPU' - there are times when it's deleted & therefore the CPU will show high usage.

You can't end the system idle process

My laptop used to have an Azerti keyboard.
I had it repaired, sorted out, etc., and now the bloody thing is on Querti.

How do I change it back to Azerti?

Not supposed to - I've read in one of those computer problem solving forums where all the computer wizz-kids advise dumb arses like me, that that's what controls the usage to a large extend.

3. Control Panel - Regional and language settings - Advanced Options -
Language for programs not Unicode - LANGUAGE

4. Control Panel - Regional and language Settings - Languages -
Details - Configuration - Installed services - Add - Language and
distribution of the keyboard.

3. Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - General- Languages -
Add - LANGUAGE

I think you can end some processes but whether they affect the PC's performance is something only advanced users can tell.

Lots of processes that are installed automatically in Windows are actually unecessary. Here's a useful site recommended by the nice people at Sygate security to determine which to turn off..

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Scroll down to the table, which shows all Windows services you'll likely find running. Refer to the column 'Safe' mode. This is the configuration you want to minimise wasted system resources (so speed things up) AND for SECURITY reasons to keep hackers and trojans out.

To change settings go to start/run then type services.msc. This brings up a window which allows you to change the setting for each service between automatic/manual/disable. Lots of things you have running automatically you don't need at all. Eveything is reversable and you can always reset to default later if you want to.

Having a firewall doesn't mean you are not still vunerable. To check your system go to Gibson Research page and use his Shields Up utilities to check your pc.

http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2

There are five free scans here that tell you if you are safe or not, an what to do if not. Also three free download programmes to fix Windows vulnerabilities, including those recommended by the FBI as critical fixes.

also check here for how to eliminate backdoor vulnerabilities in Windows.

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm (recommended by Sygate security).

Windows XP problem:

I've right clicked on mp3 files and gone to 'open with', then checked off the 'always use this program' box, then doubled clicked on Winamp.

Yet for some reason, the mp3s keep opening in Windows Media Player.

Any suggestions?
