look for some third party tools to fix it, there are a few available You can try and copy it from an existing XP cd but that rarely works without issues |

I've finally joined 'the now' and had broadband installed after struggling with dial up for 6-7 years!
Anyways, upon installation i realised i didnt have an ethernet card so i had to install the modem via a usb port. which worked fine for around 5 mins until i decided i wanted a wireless set up instead. So went out and brought 100 quid worth of stuff so i can get wireless set up and included in this was an ethernet card which i was informed by PC world was a must for using a wireless router. Installation of the card seemed to go fine, but when trying to reinstall my broadband software to use the ethernet port rather than the usb i get an error message along the line of 'unable to recognise adaptor (DCHP)' or something along those lines (apologies i dont have the exact quote - i'm actually writing this from a friends pc) I've called the NTL technical people several times but they keep blaming the ethernet card, saying it must be faulty - aparantly the IP address is not compatible? I've got the recent most drivers i can find for the card but that hasn't helped and this morning i shelled out on an ethernet to usb adaptor hoping this would get me around the card problem but all it's done is put me back another 25quid and given me the same error message I'd really appreciate any help anyone can offer - i wanna crack on and get my wireless set up so i can go another 7 years without upgrading. thanks in advance |

laptop or pc? version of windows? model/type of router?
remove everything. Install your broadband software and make sure that you can get a wired connection first to your pc or laptop via your router. Once you have that setup its usually fairly easy, you just need to set the correct settings within your router homepage. Check in the manual its usually something like http://192.1.1.etc |

ok so this is my plan of action
remove everything, including physically removing the cards from the tower. install the ethernet card first ensure the ip address is set correctly, as outlined in the manual (which i've now read btw) install the broadband software via the ethernet & the wireless router from the start. install the wireless card post my thanks for your help on this site via my wireless connection? |

Don't know if this has been adressed before, but I'm having some trouble with my laptop.
From time to time I can't connect to the internet even though I've got contact with the wireless network. I can still download files using bittorrent, but I can't open web pages or log on with MSN Messenger. When I troubleshoot in messenger I get the message that my gateway appears to be offline. Can anyone help me? |

you cant stop wireless problems from occuring so to speak, other than to make sure that you have a consistent decent signal strength. Make sure that your router is not near to anything which may interfere (microwaves are a big no no)
Investing in a better quality router helps. Last but not least, if it annoys you too much then go back to a wired connection. |

Ok, so the fact that I never experience this problem when I'm using my schools' wireless network is just because they've got a better router than me?
(wtf's a router anyway? The thing that transmits....stuff?) |

IM Plus
I dont know what the feck this thing is but it seems to be in cantonese or chinese or some shit and its basically installed itself on my computer. Every time i load up msn it gives me chinese sub headings. It regularly updates itself and the only way i can use msn properly is by hitting ctrl + alt + del and ending the implus in processes. I cant find where its planted itself and ive clicked every cantonese button there is and it still wont uninstall. I cant find it in the add remove section either.
Anyone know what this is all about and how i exterminate it? |

When I had one of these programmes I couldn't find it because it was hidden. Make sure you go to folder options > show hidden files.
I know it sounds simple but it kept me busy for 3 hours ![]() |
