It's aint compicated, but why would you do it?

Stan reckons an hour should do the job, I'll use that as my guideline.

cinc, my pc has an abundance of crap on it, the DVD drive hardly works, there's loads of programs that I never ever use, loads of shite I never want to see again, demos that have expired and the hard drive is nearly full. I'm moving anything important over to a mac, and wiping the slate clean with a fresh install. It's a few years old, but still a usable pc for general use.

It's wise then. between 35-65 minutes on average depending on your system.

I reinstalled it...but it's not done what I thought it would do. The thing is exactly the same, same programs, same files, same free space.......I wanted a fresh system, clean hard drive, no rubbish on it, new settings all round...like the day it arrived etc....how do I get that, lads?

I put the reinstallation cd in and followed all of the instructions. I even had to ring Microsoft for an activation code....but it's exactly the same as it was.

Where did I feck up?

I have a problem. My norton 2007 scans my pc and says that I have a low risk tracking cookie, so I delete it but if I scan again like 5 mins later, the tracking cookie is back again what do I do. Plus when I shut down my pc it says that it's ending program CCAPP( or sumin like that). When I check my anti virus history, it says that I'm being attacked by low risks threats like every two seconds. What can I do to resolve these two problems.

p.s I have formatted my hard-drive twice?

Yes, that's the point of them giving out recovery CD's. so it's exactly the same as when it first arrived, it loads all drivers etc on, what you need is an OEM XP disc, that will come with none of the crap installed, but you will then need to go and get programs such as NeroDVD Playback/Antivirus software

Another option is to go and uninstall everything that's on it, but getting an OEM disc is the best choice

Well dc....can I not format the drive, lose all of the shite that builds up on hard drives, make a system partition and say, a storage partition, then reinstall XP, using the reinstallation cd - giving me a new, clean pc, just like day one, but with 2 partitions, just the way I want it. Surely the reinstallation cd will let me do that. That crap that Dell pre-install isn't that big a deal...it was there day one as well.

With recovery CD's, I don't think you can make partitions, it just goes ahead and does it automatically and uses the whole drive, though there must be some sort of format going on before it installs the data back onto the drive, I don't think it would just install over it, have a look around when you run the CD to see if there's an option for partitions, if not there's other tools you can use to format the drive first, but have a look for the partition option first

I just had a look there....the first option is to 'Install Windows XP', which I just went ahead a did the last time without looking at the other options, one of which is 'Learn More about the Setup Process'....and looking down through that it gives a procedure for a clean install, formatting and making partitions etc...

It also says this...'Important! If you use a recovery CD from an original equipment manufacturer (also called an OEM), it is possible that the CD will not be accepted. If you delete the partition information or format the drive and the OEM recovery CD is not accepted as valid media, you must use the OEM recovery CD to restore your previous version of Windows. For details about restoring your system using the OEM recovery media, please contact your computer manufacturer.'

Remove Norton and get a better and free spyware program like the ones mentioned so many times in this PC thread.

Perhaps you didn't set the browser to keep cookies permanently so they are removed once they expire.

Has it removed the folder option from the tools menu in WINDOWS explorer?

If so search the registry for nofolderoptions and set the value to 0

or go to start/run/gpedit.msc and make sure the following policy is not enabled

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer

I'm not sure exactly where it is since I don't use IE other than for testing. But try opening IE, go to Internet Option on the toolbar. There should be a Privacy tab on the Internet Option window. There should be an Advance button, click that and you can enable session cookies from there.

More familiar with FF, because there's a specific option to enable cookies. So yeah, have a go with that. Enabling the session cookies should allow your cookies to be stored permanently.
