sounds like a driver problem (pardon the pun)

go into device manager, remove your sound driver and let windows reinstall it.

Check - Right click on my computer > properties > hardware tab > device manager > look for audio (it may come up as yellow question mark if the drivers are not installed)

Have you installed anything, hardware wise or updated windows?

You could maybe re-install the audio drivers as a first step or try a 'system restore' to a few days back as another option.

I tried system restore, but theproblem still exists. I went to device manager, but couldnt find the sound tab, I found high definition audio controller, and it says thats working fine.

That is probably it. Try expanding it but anyway you can do what GB said there by clicking on the properties or something and removing the driver BUT make sure you have the set of drivers first! Preferably the ones you know were working or if not, download the most up-to-date ones for your laptop and install them.

I have to ask you have your speakers turned on and the laptop isn't on MUTE is it? Other than that I don't know...

They used to be above the search bar but they have moved up to the very top of my screen...

First off let me give you my PC specs:-

P4 2.53GHZ/512K
512 MB NON-ECC RDRAM ( 2X256) 533MHZ
128MB ATI RADEON 9700 TX GRAPHICS CARD

Ok, i bought a game the other day and found out my Graphic card does not support it, so i need a newer one. Im wondering if my computer is so out of date now and should buy a new PC. I have looked at the Dell website and saw a pc with 'Intel® Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 Processor (2.40GHz, 1066MHz 8MB)' This new pc is 2.40ghz and my old one is 2.53ghz. Now i am confused. My pc seems to be faster. Is this true?
Because thats a quad core processor....effectively 4 cores and not 2 like you we're quoted before.

Its like having 4 X 2.4GHz processors.....i wouldn't get a quad core yet though and get a dual core.

theres very little software(if any) out at the moment thats able to use all 4 cores together

right click on 'My Computer' icon.....then go to properties

On the 'Hardware' tab there should be a button for 'Device Manager'

Look for your audio device, right click and uninstall it

Restart your computer and windows should automatically reinstall your audio device.

I keep getting these pop-ups saying that my registry is corrupt and it keeps telling me to go on sites such as: regupdating, fixwin etc etc. I have norton antivirus 2007 but it's not blocking thses pop ups!!

When I scan my pc; norton picks up a low risk tracking cookie!! I remove it and then the next time i do another one, it says that it has found the exact same low risk cookie. What can I do and are my two problems linked and if so; what's the solution?

thanks in advance

Those are adware/spyware, so you'll need to scan your computer with applications like Ad-aware and Spybot (and enable its spyware protection). I wouldn't trust Norton to do a proper job of blocking them.

Might be worthwhile to give TweakNow RegCleaner a scan on your registry as well.

get a youtube link

copy the part after the "=" symbol and paste that in between the youtube tags

Code:
[youtube]copy/paste the part after the "=" here[/YOUTUBE}*
*use ] instead of }

Ok, so my laptop comes installed with Vista. I wish to downgrad it to XP, but everytime I insert the CD, the install XP option is greyed out. Any suggestions as to how I can sort this out to install XP only?

Did they provide you with an XP downgrade CD and a valid license key for it?

You can't downgrade to XP from Vista period.

When they say downgrade, they mean format/install XP. The CD you have will be bootable, make sure the bios is set so your first boot option is CD, save changes, make sure CD is in and away you go, make sure you have all the drivers and valid license key for your reinstallation of XP though.

Who is the laptop manufacturer by the way? I downgraded a vista laptop at work, hp one and i had no end of nightmares getting working XP drivers for it.

i had vista then i downgraded to xp

just insert the xp cd and reboot the computer and change the bios setting by pressing f4 (keep pressing f4 after you have booted your computer, it worked on my computer) and setting boot sequence of cd/dvd to first. then reboot the computer again and format the hard drive and install xp

It's Acer.

I still can't manage to get the CD to work on the laptop, as Vista just loads up, even when I press F4.

Its not necessarily F4, each bios will have a different key, its usually one of F1, F2, F10, F11, F12 or delete, keep an eye out for it when it first boots up.

Or you may have an option for a boot menu, this would also do the job (choose CD-ROM).
