can any one recommend a good client based web filter, we are looking at implementing a client based web filter for mobile users as connecting through a proxy server, which runs domain level web filtering, is causing issues with vpn and wireless portal connections. google is not much help, any help would be appreciated.

I didn't know that.

However, I have finally saved it today to the point that I have all of my data, but no programs installed - most of them I never needed probably, so I have to spend six hours now getting the fucking thing back into reasonable shape.

We messed around with this a lot for our mobile users, in the end we gave up and set a group policy to exclude mobile users from the gp setting the proxy server.

Client based web filtering just sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen however you might want to try some of the kiddie protect progs, they will probably filter out all the shit they might want to browse like porn and so on.

If they are mobile then you have to have some level of trust, i.e. they aren't browsing porn and even if they are, its not done whilst connected to the domain.

What were you doing when it makes the noise? Anything that would make the PC work harder or is it random?

Next time it does it, right click an empty space on the task bar at the bottom (where you see what apps you have open) and go into Task Manager, choose processes and have a look in the list and see if any processes are hitting your CPU/Mem, or post a screenshot of it all and ill check for you if you havent any idea what you're doing.

Its absolutely random. I might be only listening to music or even doing nothing just having it powered on thats all.

No CPU usage at all.. when listening to music its between 0%-4% and it stays that way. But the noise is just random, could be dirty? but if it was dirty wouldnt it be noisy all the time?

go to where one of your music files is stored. Right click on it and go to "open with". Choose the option to "choose program"

scroll through the list and click windows media player. Put a tick in the box "always use this program.." click ok

alternatively just open it with windows media player and it should give you the option to use it as your default player

TVersity Problem

I've come across a problem with a piece of software that I have never seen before, and it didn't happen before I recently upgraded my XPSP2 HOME to XPSP2 PRO.

It happens with the TVersity GUI in that it doesn't recognise the actual TVersity Media Server as a running service - it can't find its own server that is located on the same machine, yet I know the Media Server service is running through "services.msc" and the fact that the PS3 and my laptop can pull data off it without any problems. I could manage my media on the server through the command line, but this is a serious pain in the arse. What the GUI does is uses 50-60% of the processor whilst continuously trying to connect to the server, and without connection to the server, all of its options are inaccessible.

I actually know what the problem is, but I've never seen anything like it before. The GUI's entry in the registry is as so:

If I change it to the following, it solves the problem:

Which is odd, because here is my current hosts file:

Ok, you might say, I have a solution that works - but no. If I reset the computer, the fucking thing changes the registry entry back to localhost, and it won't work again.

So, my questions are:

A) Why is this program having problems mapping localhost to the correct IP now it is running under XP PRO, but it did not have this problem under XP HOME - and is there a way to fix this?

B) If there is no way to fix it, how can I stop the fucking thing changing this registry key on bootup?

You could restrict the permissions on that hive for the system, to read only perhaps

I do this to prevent group policies affecting my pc at work

cheers mate.

we have mobile user set up with group policy at the minute to restrict them from the connections tab but the problem we have is with captive portals on wi-fi networks.

through group policy the proxy server is added and an excpetion to allow them to get to our vpn page only. unfortunately they can't get to captive portals to sign into most public wifi networks.

i have found trend micro since i first posted that seems to do the trick of local based wed filtering. thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Thanks Stan, I'll try that.

Another thing, if I ping localhost, it's getting a response from ::1: WTF?

Depends on your hardware. If you're using good components then the PSU is the most part of the pc. The Corsair VX series is relatively cheap and good and should come with a 5 year warranty. Besides, getting an energy efficent PSU (80Plus) you'll save money in the long run on power consumption alone.

I've heard that GeForce 8300GS is totally lousy.

Anyway, building your own PC from parts is way cheaper.

Just google something like 'customize a pc', and you will get many sites.

The one many people have recommended me is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/syscon...=43&catid=1077.

Microsoft Silverlight

Microsoft Silverlight. Checked it out on the MS website, looked fancy so I installed it. Dont know what it's for nor what to do with it. it says Microsoft® Silverlight™ is a cross-browser, cross-platform, and cross-device plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. What does all that mean? What do I do with it?

Microsoft Silverlight is a browser plugin that allows web applications to be developed with features like animation, vector graphics, and audio-video playback - features that characterize a rich internet application. Silverlight competes with products such as Adobe Flash, Adobe Flex, Adobe Shockwave, Java FX, and Apple QuickTime. Version 2.0 brought improved interactivity and allows developers to use .NET languages and development tools when authoring Silverlight applications.

its some type of java/flash

I have a Compaq NX6325 laptop. When I shutdown, it shuts down as normal, but the power switch, mute button and power light indicator all stay lit up, but everything else seems to have shut down. I have to hold the power button to turn it off manually. Anybody have any idea what's causing this shutdown problem?
