Infact just noticed you gave the name...

The second one might be a good one to read.
Thanks I'll have a look.

Yes, you should not have installed that antivirus 2008 software. It is most likely spyware itself. Reboot in safe mode with networking and install a popular antivirus like AVG or antivir.

Just a quick follow-up on this. After trying various suggestions I have basically given up on trying a fix myself and have taken my box to the pros from Dover (my company's IT group).

After booting up the comment I received back from IT was that my computer was one sick puppy. Current plan is to save off all data files (after thorough scan/cleaning), nuke the hard drive and reload.

Not a perfect solution as I am certain to loose some data files and I will still need to reload programs that weren't installed by Dell.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
The end of the second link I gave.

Good luck.

Thanks, I already used AVG and it didn't fix the problem.

It doesn't look good after reading that forum, If I re-format the hard drive will the virus be gone? I can save all my file's and download most of my programs.

If you can save the data and do a clean re-install with minimum fuss it is by far the best thing to do.

The virus won't come back unless you copy over any infected files or install that program again.

Make sure you have security programs set up straight away if you do.

Possibly, if it's got into your hosts file or firewall.

Here are the instructions and an alternative download link.

Automated Removal Instructions for XP Antivirus 2008, XP Antivirus 2009, and XPAntivirus using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

1. Print out these instructions as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the following location and save it to your desktop:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link

3. Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.

4. Double-click on the icon on your desktop named Download_mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.

5. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the Finish button.

6. MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main program as shown below.

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Screen

7. On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Perform quick scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer for XP Antivirus 2008, XP Antivirus 2009, and XPAntivirus related files.

8. MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan. When MBAM is scanning it will look like the image below.

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Scanning Screen

9. When the scan is finished a message box will appear as shown in the image below.

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Scan Finished Screen

You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the XP Antivirus 2008, XP Antivirus 2009, and XPAntivirus removal process.

10. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.

11. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown as seen in the image below.

MalwareBytes Scan Results

You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine.

12. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

13. You can now exit the MBAM program.

Cheers, I'll do this if shotgun’s instructions don’t get rid of it. It is a bit of a pain but I probably could have had it pretty much restored to it's previous state in the time I've already wasted on it.

Reformatting windows is never the best option. You have to install all the software and drivers again which is a painful process. Try rebooting to safe mode and scan your computer for spyware/adware/viruses

This infected a friend's PC and I'm sure I got rid of it for him with something fairly basic like Spyware Terminator or Spybot.

Anyways, good luck.

That's why I included 'if you can do it with minimum fuss'...

Personally, I would try and get rid of it for a little while longer but patience grows thin when dealing with a bastard virus. A fresh start at that point seems a much simpler option.

I have no idea what proseletyzing means, but message received and I might take your advice, I've had far too many problems with windows which apparently I wouldn't have had with Linux.

If you decide to switch to ubuntu, please remember that it looks/works completely different from windows and there is a learning curve. It will take a month or two to get used to it, then you'll be flying with better security, usability and eye candy.

another fucking myth

no one gives a flying fuck about ubuntu so no hacker wants to create viruses for it as only gimps use it.
