Unfortunately, in computing terms, there's a huge, huge difference between two error numbers.

Try this first: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...9a75f1033.mspx

Then if that doesn't work, there's some very nasty instructions here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/1...date-in-vista/

Ok, this (different) problem has always existed, so now I'm trying to get it sorted:

Whenever I resume my computer from power-saving, there is a delay until I can effectively use it again (when Vista "hangs").

Normal Resuming Delays:

Hibernate: 30+ seconds
Sleep (not Hyrbid): 30 seconds
Locking: 7 seconds
Closing Lid: 5 seconds

It's the sleep one that's frustrating. It takes about 2-4 seconds for the laptop to actually re-initialise, then as soon as I get to the desktop, it hangs for 30 seconds or so. Looking at the Event Viewer (from Performance Information and Tools), this is typically a 3-step process of symptoms/delays.

1) The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded.

2) The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Reason : CPU resources are over-utilized.
Diagnosis : A sharp degradation in Desktop Window Manager responsiveness was observed.

[30 seconds or so later]

3) Information about the system performance monitoring event:
Scenario : System Responsiveness
Analysis result : Analysis was unable to find any rootcauses
Incident Time (UTC) : 27/09/2008 21:04:34

Any ideas?

Driver problem?

Updating all your drivers should help. Especially video ones.

There's BIOS adjustments you can make too but I don't know about them, as I've never had problems with sending my computer to "sleep".

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager.

Find the component (Display adapter, or whatever), right click and select Update.

Yesterday I somehow picked up a virus on my Hp laptop (vista) with an out of date Norton internet security running.
Windows defender informs me I have "trojan Downloader:Win32/Renos.Y" but a scan with Norton detected nothing.
Is there a free spyware zapper out there...if so which is the best one to try?
I'm a bit stund concerning computers.
Cheers in advance.

Does this happen to anyone else?

When i click to download a file, any file, even saving a picture, it takes a few seconds for the windows download window to appear. During that time my whole system locks up. As soon as it starts downloading it frees up again. However, when it reaches 100% it freezes again until the download window disappears.

Which browser are you using? Does it happen on all of them (i.e. is it the Windows download window that freezes occur before/after)?

On Vista or not?

My mouse is playing up. Sometimes when I click on a link it will download the webpage to my desktop instead of opening it. It's a wireless Logitech optical mouse. Any ideas?

Nothing to do with your mouse. It's your connection or browser. Specs?

Funnily enough, mine sometimes switches functions for the mouse wheel.

Just keep your drivers updated.

Do a clean reinstall of Firefox first (backup your bookmarks and stuff beforehand).

Didn't work

It even happens when I close the lid (which just turns off the screen) or lock the computer, which is frustrating seeing as your not really changing anything - everything should still be running (?)

Never had this issue on XP...

less of a problem, more of a query. how secure are files encryped using this? http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html

ihave some files saved in this format. assuming one could not guess the password, would they still be able to access said files?

It's impossible to tell. All keys can be broken but the point of encryption is to make it infeasible. 256-bit AES is very high and for all intents and purposes, is secure enough.

Well there's nothing in my startup folder for some reason (Vista... ), but I have the following services/apps running on startup:

NVIDIA Driver Helper Service
NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver ()
NVIDIA Media Centre Library
Synaptics Pointing Device
HP QuickPlay
HP Quicktouch On Screen Display
StartMen Application (not what it sounds like )
Windows Defender
HP Health Check Scheduler
HP Wireless Assistant
HP Wireless Assistant
Java Platform SE 6 U10
Acrobat
QuickTime
Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
MS Windows OS (x3)
Google Update
Delivery Manager
AVG
AOL Connectivity Manager

It's been happening the entire time I've had the laptop, and I can find the "unresponsive" event in the computers logs, but it refuses to tell me the cause.
