I mix and match my internet security with free software. AVG (others would prefer avast), Zone Alarm, Spy-bot and spywareblaster.

That bundle will take care of anti-virus, firewall, and spyware protection without pouring good money down the drain every time something needs to be updated.
thank you for your advice...I have Spybot and Spywareblaster...if I just dont renew my subscription to Norton...would that work?

Nope, all hell breaks loose when Norton expires. Most of the times when I had to help remove Norton is because it has expired and it will continuously whine and complain because some parts of the system is not up-to-date

Norton and Mcafee suck balls!

I have used AVG for over a year now and it's fantastic.

Only if Norton itself 'lets' you to uninstall it completely

Run the above and it may remove it and any others that are undoubtedly on you're computer.

Also a program that prevents them going on to you're computer which you do not have to run unless to update every so often.

1st one is a highly recommended free spyware remover.. [SPYBOT]

2nd link is adaware remover, not necessary but good to have.. [ADAWARE]

3rd link is not a remover but prevents most spyware from getting onto your comp. [SPYWAREBLASTER]

agree with that 100%

avg 7.5
adaware-se
ccleaner
windows firewall
router firewall

Thats all anyone should ever need for a personal computer. If you really must go and buy an AV steer well clear of norton and mccafee. Both major system hogs and pretty useless anyway.

Pour water over it to stop the whirling.

err what have you been doing to your hard-drive!?

Nah, seriously if it has just started to whirl loudly and it isn't because your loading up a take over the world program then I would say it has a slight chance of dying. That would be worst case scenario but probably the most likely.. Just wait and see I guess

P.S I hope you have any important stuff backed up!

Well yeah if it is pretty old I would seriously start backing up the stuff you need. Hard drives do tend to make a noise before they go..

There are some decent 'clone/backup' packages on the market - wouldn't really know any apart from 'Ghost' (download it) - these would allow you to make an exact copy and maybe put the whole operating system on another drive.

Anyways.

I think I will take action this weekend, but I've nothing on this PC anymore apart from Entourage and hereos. I put an extra gig of ram in it less than a month ago. Need any ram?

Had a major computer fuck up last April around dissertation writing time, so had to do a swift and dirty reformat/reinstall to get moving again. Since then though, my keyboard's been under the that it's an american, with @ and " swapped, two \ keys, and no arsing pound or euro sign to be found anywhere (bloody xenophobe).

I'm usually alright at figuring this stuff out, but it's taken longer than a 10 minute google search so I'm giving one of you lucky people the chance to get your good deed for the day out of the way! So, how do I get my fine specimen of a dusty abused european keyboard back to the way it was meant to be?

Control Panel > Regional and language options > Languages tab > Details button under Text and Input language

Change your keyboard from there

I have a minor problem with my laptop which I cannot explain, hopefully one of you can help.

All of the icons on my desktop and files have split in half with the left portion on the right and vice versa. They have lost colour and are an insipid pastille shade. Scanning the computer shows no virus, I am using AVG.

Please feel free to laugh at my ineptitude if this problem is well known, your help will be appreciated

Thats a strange one mate.

As Justin said, can you post a screenshot of the laptop?
Its a possiblity that it could be a monitor or graphics card problem.

Do you have diagnostics software you could run on the computer?

I don't know how to post a picture on the main forum so the anwer is no.

Thanks very much for your replies but I think I have solved the problem, someone suggested I change the colour setting to 16 bit from 32 bit and then back again and all is well. I have no idea how it happened or why this cured it but it did.

Sorry to waste your time.

Ok, I've got a real problem this time.

If I try to restart my computer after it's been running for a while, the computer responds by saying fuck off and refusing to start.

If I wait for 15 minutes it will start, but then I get an error message during start up:

"Overclocking error, press F1 for setup or press F2 to continue with same settings" (or something like that)

It's happened four or five times after I recently moved, and it's fucking annoying.

Help anyone?

I'm no expert but it sounds like your BIOS thinks the processor is being overclocked.

no real expert but I've heard this before and it might be that the CMOS battery on the motherboard is dying and needs replacing
