and give your fan and stuff a bit of a dust-down that can negate the effects of the fan cooling the processor - you may just have a simple overheating problem - try leaving the side of the case off as well just once to see if that stops the problem...

I think Kristjan might be on to something. I updated the BIOS, and now it says that I have a CMOS error and an overclocking error on startup.

So... how hard is it to replace the CMOS battery?

I've recently air-cleaned the cooling ribs for the CPU fan so I don't think it's that, and these are the numbers Speedfan shows me:

System 35C
CPU 40C
AUX 119C
HD0 42C
Core 0 37C
Core 1 37C
Core 56C

Everything seems normal (except for AUX which is incredibly high, I don't know what the fuck AUX is though, so I'm just assuming it's nothing.... I might be wrong though)

Did you update the BIOS before or after these problems started? BIOS updates are notorious for fucking things up, especially if its changed the RAM timings etc to different defaults.

The CMOS battery isn't that likely to be the problem, they should last decades.

I updated the BIOS because of these problems...

The problem started for no obvious reason.

I did air-clean the cooling ribs for my CPU fan, could this have fucked up anything? Then again, the temperatures (see above) seems to be ok...

I'm not too keen on fucking to much with my computer, I got help to build it when I bought it in february.

I just think it's strange that it starts perfectly when I haven't used the computer for a while, but when I try to start it while it's "warm" it just starts buzzing but I don't get the start-up beep that I've grown to love...

The start-up error did mention CMOS though. Can't remember specifically what it said, and now that the computer's working I'm not too keen on turning it off again.

There will be a CMOS reset switch somewhere on the motherboard, could try flicking that on and off. It will reset any BIOS settings to safe levels if stuff is being clocked to high. Should read the manual for your motherboard.

I have loaded the default BIOS settings in the setup.

Shouldn't that be enough?

Bah... Isn't there some super-duper program I can run that will instantly tell me what my problem is?

I have accidently deleted my entire porn collection!

I was bored one night and shamelessly decided to download one of those virtual sex games. I had downloaded it into the folder containing all the porn that I've gathered over the years. I'd noticed that my computer had been running slow ever since the download, so I went onto add/remove programmes and uninstalled the game. The problem is, it's taken the entire folder with it!

Is there any chance of getting the folder back?

If your using XP then do a system restore and see if that brings it back...

Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore

Take it back a week and it should bring it back up for you.

I'm tweaking Azureus and I've made it to this part in the guide:

"First we have to increase the maximum number of connections allowed by windows. To do this, download this patch. Extract the .exe to your desktop and run it, a DOS prompt will open up. Press "Y" then "enter" to change the number to 50 maximum connections, instead of 10. Some users will find that their Max connections are already set at 50 or higher, and if this is the case for you can delete the patch and skip this step."

The patch it refers to can be found at http://www.lvllord.de/

I've downloaded it, but when I try to execute it nothing happens. Is there any other way to increase the maximum number of connections allowed by windows?

I've done this before and then it worked perfectly, strange that the file won't run properly just because I've re-installed windows...

This computer is a new, first build for me. And I'm in the process of trying to install Windows XP and at the same time, trying to get the hard drive to be recognized by the Windows.

Through the BIOS, the BIOS has recognized the hard drive, but I've been failing to get the screen to go to the "Windows Setup" screen, therefore, preventing me from pressing the F6 key in the screen. I'm pretty much stuck here, and I've got no idea what's wrong with this computer. Here are the specs:

GIGABYTE GA-M61PM-S2 AM2 NVidia MoBo (AWARD BIOS)
LG 18x DVDR Super-Multi DVD Burner w/ DVD Ram Write
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s HDD
Kingston 2GB (2x1GB) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Mem
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+(65W) Windsor 2.2GHz Socket AM2
SONY 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive
Atech Flash Xm-4U 11-in-1 USB 2.0 Internal Card Reader
CoolerMaster 600W Power Supply Unit

That's the spec, and I'm pretty sure there'd be no hardware conflict.

I've been trying to solve this for the past 4 weeks, or one month. The thing is I'm trying to build this new computer, and give the one I'm currently using to my sister, who got her computer broken due to a certain squirrel that decided to fry itself in the electric cable lines outside.

I've been asking some fellow friends about this issue, but they have no idea what's wrong with it. So I'm asking all of you great, and smart people in this forum, please help me solve this problem.

PS - Might I need to buy anything new, please don't hesitate with recommendations.

Installed, as in physically install it into the case, and plug the SATA cable to the motherboard? Then yes.

Another question regarding another computer.

It's my sister's, and her computer failed to turn on all of a sudden. It was a pre-built Compaq computer, approximately three years old.

The trouble is that when she or I would press the power button, the fans would start spinning. Usually, the PSU would power up high, and slow down to a minimal sound, but all it would do is continue to made loud noise, and would not die back down. The screen is blank, and I've got no idea what to replace or fix. Please help!

*On the side note, the same day the computer went weird, a squirrel was seen fried near an electric post, which caused a temporary black out.

When u say black out I assume it was a complete power cut ? That being the case its highly probable its blown something. Start with the basics try a different psu, Is power getting to the motherboard ?

Is the HD being picked up in the bios. Unfortunately the processer is very easy to damage in a power cut but u could get lucky I did once.

Im assuming you are booting up with xp disk in the cd/dvd rom and its this point you are unable to proceed.

Firstly ensure your boot sequence is right boot from cd rom should be first. Secondly if its a new HD which I assume it is then ensure you do a full format of the drive before you install windows. You will then need ot add a partition but windows will guide you through this.

Disable any other hardware, you wont need your graphics card in yet or any other drives. Once windows is installed you can start to add to your system but for now do with with the minimum requirements to ensure no conflicts. Ensure all ure power cables are properly plugged in and ure ide cables are also in properley

If your cdrom and HD are being picked up in the bios then you really shouldnt have any issues from here on in.

Install Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) on XP Home
Out of the box, MSMQ is not available to install on XP Home, just XP Pro. Here are my notes to get it installed on XP Home. The technique is similar to Adam V's "Installing IIS on Windows XP Home." NOTE: you may need to install IIS first.

Requirements
XP Home Install CD (may not be needed)
Windows 2000 Server CD (W2k Workstation might work, but I never tried it)
Procedure
Make sure temp directory exists
Open a DOS window (Start → Run → type CMD and press enter) then type
mkdir c:\temp
You may get an error; that's okay. Switch to that directory:
cd /d c:\temp
Add MSMQ to your windows components Add/Remove screen
Edit your c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf and add the following line in the [Components] section:
msmqocm=msmqocm.dll,OcEntry,msmqocm.inf,,7
Put your W2K CD in the drive (D: in this example) and extract msmqocm.inf into your c:\windows\inf directory:
c:\temp> expand d:\i386\msmqocm.in_ c:\windows\inf\msmqocm.inf
Extract msmqocm.dll into your c:\windows\system32\setup directory:
c:\temp> expand d:\i386\msmqocm.dl_ c:\windows\system32\setup\msmqocm.dll
Bulk expand DLLs and EXEs into the temp directory:
c:\temp> for %a in (d:\i386\*mq*.dl_) to expand %a %~na.dll
c:\temp> for %a in (d:\i386\*mq*.ex_) to expand %a %~na.exe
Install MSMQ
Go to add/remove programs in your control panel and click the "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left side.
Put a check next to "Message Queuing Services" and click "next."
If the installer can't find a file, point it to your temp directory (C:\temp).
If it STILL can find a file, you'll need to expand it from the CD to the c:\temp directory and try #3 again:
For example, if it can't find "foo.sys" you will run the following:
c:\temp> expand d:\i386\foo.sy_ foo.sys
Back to menu

It's the CPU that was the problem. I've moved the memory, HDD, CD ROM, PSU to another computer, and they all worked fine. The CPU, I couldn't get to it, because this stupid company somehow glued the CPU fan down.

Windows scheduler usually starts these programs but i can't see them in the taskbar or anywhere for that matter but when i go to the task manager its only visible under the process where i can only terminate it.
