Question 1

I have recently bought a laptop that does not have a CD-Burner (or what ever it is called) So i cant copy CD's. Now as it is not that important to me, i decieded i would get a new laptop with better ram and processor ect. Rather than get a CD Burner built it.

I was wondering how much approx, would it cost to install a CD Burner into my laptop as i have seen you can buy CD burners for around £30. Would it be possible to connect it to my laptop, or would that not be possible?

Question 2

I have a wireless router in my house and all my PC's are wireless. However upstairs where my PS3 is, i only get a 50% signal strength. Would it be possible to improve this signal in any way? Also how expensive would it be?

Thanks in advance.

Regarding question 1, you can buy CD burners that you connect to your computer via USB. It's easy and cheap. Since it's a laptop it's usually also possible to remove the standard drive with another one, but it might cost more, not sure about it though.

Question 2. Some wireless adapters / routers have the option of adding a high gain antenna.
It's also a possibility to add repeaters but they are less efficient and it can be amazingly hard to install them.

I ordered a motherboard and 8800gts graphics card from microdirect last Thursday, and it was delivered last night at 7pm (Sunday), I'm not too bothered that I paid for next day delivery and they didn't honour it, but what is bothering me is that the items wasn't in a sealed pack or had any security seals. I was looking at the Graphics cards in PC world last night, and they all was cellophane wrapped. Are they pulling a fast one?

I have been told that if you stick a usb stick in your Laptop (Vista), it adds ram onto your PC.

Eg, if your laptop had 2gb of ram and you added a 1gb usb stick onto your laptop, you would now have 3gb of ram?

Personally i believe this is bullshit, but can anyone give me a definate answer?

Thanks

There is actually an element of truth in that, not sure about the details though.

Windows Vista introduces Windows ReadyBoost, a new concept in adding memory to a system. You can use non-volatile flash memory, such as that on a universal serial bus (USB) flash drive, to improve performance without having to add additional memory "under the hood."
If you don't believe it or want to look into it maybe you could visit the below Microsoft site explaining the features of Vista...

I've even directly linked you to the page....

I've got a problem playing a network game with my flatmate.

We started the game without problem yesterday, I'm the server, and we played trough the pre-season before I saved the game and we stopped playing. He was logged on while I saved.

Today I loaded the game, but when he tried to join the game his manager profile was listed as not logged on, and he was listed as a "new user". We're connected trough a wireless network.

How can I fix this?

I know this might be in the wrong thread, but I was thinking it could have something to do with IP-adresses or something like that, since my computer won't recognise him?

That's exactly what it is, perhaps not increasing it though but having it on a different location to the OS

Which is the way any build should be configured

I keep losing my internet connection. AOL said it could be that the software is corrupt and advise me to uninstall/reinstall.

But if it's the software, why does Norton tell me that all components are working correctly?

And OT, but this practice of outsourcing is doing my head in. When I rang AOL, aka India, I couldn't understand what the guy was saying, and I don't think he could understand me.

Me: I keep getting disconnected.

Him: Can you go to your sign on screen?

Me: (Goes to sign on screen, and assumes he wants me to sign on, which I do) OK, I am back online now.

Him: Thank you - is there anything else I can help you with.

Me: (After ten second gob-smacked pause) Yes, you can help me with my disconnection problem.

All microdirect's stuff comes like that usually, you probably bought the OEM version with the motherboard and got the card a bit cheaper.

anyone know who the best people are for Hard Disk recovery

second HD is screwed, making a funny noise, and not being recognised in windows. Bios does recognise it though.

Got to try and recover it as it has the wedding/honeymoon photos, and all of my MP3's (which I paid for)

I know i am going to have to pay out, but its a hit I am going to have to take

I did a bit of googling and found this - http://free-backup.info/data-recovery-software.htm

Can't hurt to try, all though i dont have any first hand experience with any of them listed. My bet would be on the first one, NTFS reader.

Even with a hardware failure it shouldnt matter. Try the NTFS reader from a boot disc and see how you go, cant hurt to try.

We (work) sent a directors hard disk away to have some files recovered and we got charged 800 quid
