Any of you Reds modernists?
Wondering for those of you in Europe(not excluding anyone else). I myself am a somewhat obsessive mid-century modernist. The Eameses, George Nelson, Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll, Hans Wegner, Jean Prouve, etc, etc... Not into the poppy stuff as much(Panton), but do fancy Pierre Paulin. My purpose for starting this thread however is mainly one Robin Day. Shiteload of brilliant design his. Do any of you fancy him, own any of his peices? Might you post any pictures possibly?
It's quite impossible finding any of his in the States. Would be interested in knowing just how well regarded he is and how popular his as well as the genre in general is in Europe. Cheers. |

I have a love-hate relationship with modernism. Especially in architecture where those cnuts have ruined much of my country tearing down beautiful old buildings and replacing them with mostly grey cement boxes and general sameness.
In painting, literature, industrial design and typography for instance I appreciate the various forms of modernism a lot more. As I'm writing this I wonder if it is in fact possible to have a conversation about this kind of topic without sounding like a pretentious twat. |

Who cares? I do however agree with you. While I love the clean-lined architecture which is prevelant in post-war mod design, I appreciate all architecture. Urban restoration is a idea which hasn't exactly caught on. Demolishing historic housing to build slant roof modernism is a bit of an oxy-moron. |

From Bauhaus to our house - and the guys you're talking about are the ones who designed the kind of stuff that is sold to go in people's houses rather than art galleries.

Vitra has an interest in all I mentioned other than those commisioned by Knoll. Sure, it's designed for the home. But what fun is furniture, textiles or objects designed to sit in a museum? I, for one, appreciate functionality over form. I do however quite like Van Der Rohe and Corbusier, but it's not the kind of stuff you want your children or pets climbing on.

I live in a Mies Van Der Rohe and have some Mies furniture - 2 Barcelona chairs, I have developed an interest in design and architecture since I moved into this building not even realising at the time what I was buying |
