The Festival of Remembrance

Anybody else watching?

What a load of stinking shite. It seems much worse this year than it usually is. As if the pangeantry of the whole thing isn't bad enough, they've just weilded out a huge Christian cross, got a senior member of the clergy up on stage and had him speak on the behalf of everyone in the UK about how we look to Christ and the Church for guidance and all that malarky, completely ignoring those of us who aren't Christian. The arrogance, stupidity and hypocrisy is astounding. And in addition to that, the whole thing has been one huge suck up, not just to the Christian religion and the Church, but to the fecking Royal Family. Majesty this, Majesty that, and when fecking Princess Ann came out with a diamond encrusted broach to hold her three, yes THREE poppies in place (is one not good enough for her?) I just knew they were taking the piss. So, a false glorification of the military, a pushing of the Christian religion and the sucking up to the Monarchy...what does any of this have to do with remembering the dead?

Ok. You'll score a lot of redcafe points with that rant.

England hasn't really existed as an entity outside the world of sport for about 300 years, so I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about. Maybe you could explain to me how you interpreted that as anti-English?

The glorification of the military is not what prompted me to start the thread, I expect that at a remembrance day. It was all the shite that went along with it. But as it happens, the glorification of this current crop is massively over the top, and a tad insensitive if I may say so, especially when it was proclaimed that they were fighting in the name of 'peace'. But I don't want to get into another one of those discussions again.

I'm just amazed by the fact that we put up with the Christian indoctrination at these things. Atheist and agnostic soldiers and their families aside, what must the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu soldiers of the British armed forces think of the way our military is paraded as a Christian one? It's one place where PC could do with rearing its head, if you ask me. And the way everyone in the room bowed down to 'her majesty' at the end and appealed in song for God to 'save her' whilst she stood there steely faced made them look like a bunch of spackers and us look like a right backwards nation.

Just my opinion, of course.

Whether you like it or not the UK is a constitutional monarchy, and predominately a Christian country. I maybe mistaken but in the past all denominations are represented at the remembrance day ceremonies. There will have bee religious leaders from all the major religions BUT the UK is predominately Christian so they are the ones you tend to see.

Personally I am not a royalist or religious in the slightest BUT I like most don't get my knickers in a knot over such things TBH.

Is it though? How many people go to church on a regular basis?

That's something that tends to annoy me. Not your view individually, but the country as a whole. It's the reason we still have a monarchy and ruling class establishment whereas the French over the water do not. I don't know a single person who doesn't disagree with the way we blindly proclaim allegiance to the Queen, yet we all do it...and throw some religious bullshit in along with it as well. I just don't understand it and it does very much get on my wick.

Being a Christian has little to do with Church attendance. I was christened, and apart from a couple of weddings and the like I have never stepped foot inside a church. The UK is 72% christian, so its predominately a christian country.

I am not a royalist, and the ugly inbreds annoy the crap out of me. However keeping them around does generate more revenues than they cost the tax payer and they also give the UK an unique position in the world in terms of political influence.

It's my understanding that you still swear an oath to the Queen when you become a member of the armed forces. I certainly did. Like it or not she is the head of state. She is also the Captain-General of my regiment.

I also find it hard to believe that there was no recognition of other faiths in the ceremony.
