IP locations
How reliable are they?
I checked one once on two different sites - one gave me Glasgow, the other Warsaw. |

I created one for my friend's site using a standard database. Although it only shows your country, it is quite reliable. I promised him about the location too. Should do it during the holidays.

I once helped a friend find out who was hacking them by getting the hackers I.P address and then from that getting their location and finding their house on Google Earth. We knew who lived there and discovered the culprit and he fessed up, so it was right on the money. I'd say it's quite reliable but that's the only time I've ever really used it to find someone's location.

Some only show the location of where your service providers connection point is.
I've done mine a few times and it came out completely wrong - twice being in London - which would explain what I said above. I guess it depends and how much you know about it all to get the right results. |

Means nothing to me.
For instance, if I check someone's IP, how likely is it that the location that comes up is correct? And if incorrect, would there most likely be only a short distance between that and the real one, or could it be miles away. As you can tell, I'm not remotely technical. |

There are lots of rubbish ip tracing pages out there. I use the TraceRoute on http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox which seems pretty good.
An ip trace can give you an accurate location for someone if they have a static ip (an unchanging ip address given to you by your isp). Many people have dynamic ip addresses (which change within a range and are assigned automatically by your isp every time you log on) so they have broadly similar but not identical ips. You then have the complication of people who log on from more than one place and those who deliberately hide their ips by logging in via a proxy server which makes them appear to be posting from an ip that isn't in fact theirs. This is why ip checking suspicious characters is more of an art than anything else. |
