Speed the movie, but in real life.

A motorist whose car's cruise control became stuck at 60mph sending him hurtling towards oncoming motorway traffic has said he was convinced he was going to die.

Chase Weir, 22, realised he was unable to slow down when he tried to leave the motorway as he headed out of Melbourne.

Careering along in his Ford Explorer, he tried to slam on the brakes, but they did not stop him.

He then tried to take the car out of gear but it would not budge - and when he tried to pull out the key it would not turn in the ignition.

He phoned Ford for advice but when nothing worked they asked to put him on hold.

"I didn't really want to be on hold at that point. I hung up and rang 000," said Mr Weir.

"The (police) operator told me 20 times to stay calm and that help was on the way.

"I was hysterical. I screamed at the lady on the phone 'I'm going to die'.

"I have never been so scared in all my life.

Officers told him to get into the left lane and sent cars to drive in front of him, clearing vehicles with their sirens.

The chaotic convoy then exited the freeway but the terrifying scenario got worse.

Traffic was backed-up along the road forcing Mr Weir to drive on the other side of the road and towards oncoming traffic.

He was racing towards a wall of cars when a frantic police radio operator ordered him to slam on the brakes.

"She told me to jump on the brake and pull the handbrake at the same time, which I did,'' a shaken Mr Weir said.

"I just shut my eyes. I could hear the tyres skidding on the road for what seemed like forever. I thought I was dead.

"When I opened my eyes, I was bonnet to bonnet with the car in front of me."

Ford Australia has told Australia's Herald Sun newspaper that there is no link between the recall of 4.5 million Explorers in October and Mr Weir's incident.

I read about this today, very scary stuff. It was good to hear the police made a brilliant effort to help him as opposed to the ford hotline.

Sounds like the thrill of a lifetime. But I thought with cruise control you could brake anyway, then when you let off it would gradually return to the desired speed?

Bad design by ford I think. Looks like speed control module had precedence over all other signals. Probably, instead of an "AND" , there is an "OR" to control motion and stopping.

The brakes are totally independent of the cruise control. The only connection between the two is a cancel on the throttle when the brakes are applied. Even if that failed the brakes would still work.

I think this story is bullshit. Just some jerk trying to get five minutes of fame.

You set your speed but when you brake it cancels, and you take control of the car again.. If you hit the resume button it would go back to the preset speed. It also have accelerate and decelerate buttons, and when you release them the speed is set at that speed.

Or just move the shift into neutral.

He isn't an idiot, he is a lying attention whore.

The engine wouldn't disengage, he could not turn the key.

I am with Alex, the guy is lying.

I have had cruise control on the last ten cars we have owned. You can always put the car into neutral, and the brakes always work. Even in the cruise control module failed you would have those options.

If this was fake rumours would have leaked out by now surely?

Technology ballsing matters up shouldn't strike us as surprising iIMO. But maybe that is just my natural aversion to how we almost enslave ourselves to certain forms of technology these days.

Cruise control does not take over the brakes or the ability to put the car into neutral. If the module failed it would be easy to stop.

The guy is just after five minutes of fame.

If he was we'll hear about it, for the car will be [has been in a preliminary way already i imagine] examined.

And you are saying that there is no way that this failure of cruise control could not have triggered a chain of events elsewhere?

The only thing I can think of is if the abs had failed.

There have been dozens of cases of Toyotas doing something similar. Initially they tried to blame it on the floormats but evidence is now surfacing that it may be the accelerator software. Since about 2004 Toyota engines haven't utilized a traditional throttle cable instead they have a computer controlling the delivery of fuel to the engine linked to the accelerator pedal.

In this case the Fod Exploder, being a piece of shit motor, is probably at fault.

Yeah, and he didn't have to disarm bombs, shoot terrorists, and lose his friend, or even get the girl.

Still, probably better activing overall.

Which makes it sound a lot less believable. I've never been in an auto where you have had to push a button down to change up from drive to neutral 'and i've been in a few'. And if it was a manual, just clutch it and blow the motor.

Seriously, if he was going 60mph on the freeway, was he really approaching the other cars at such a high speed? What's the speed limit for freeways in Australia? It's nearly 70mph here in Sweden.

Well if he was doing 60 and the cars coming at him were doing 70 then that's pretty friggin fast combined speed.

Even of it wasn't an auto, which it probably was in Oz, why didn't he just knock it out of gear?

Is the six million dollar question. The 999 phone conversation must have been interesting.

"OMG!!! I'M GONNA DIE!!! MY CAR WON'T SLOW DOWN!!! HELP MEEEE!!!"

"Have you tried pressing the brakes, sir?"

"Ah. Right. That's done it. Thanks ever so much."

EDIT: Just watched the clip. My script wasn't far off the truth. What the fuck was he doing afterwards on a spinal board wearing a neck-brace? What a gimp.
