Arsenal clinch deal for Lyon dazzler Ben Arfa

Arsenal clinch deal for Lyon dazzler Ben Arfa
tribalfootball.com - May 10, 2008

Arsenal are set to land Olympique Lyon wing ace Hatem Ben Arfa.
The Sun says the Gunners have won the race to grab Ben Arfa.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger beat Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United to land the Tunisia-born star.

And Wenger has agreed a £16million deal for the 21-year-old, who was called into the French national team last season as a replacement for Louis Saha.

Wenger seems pretty mellow about the whole deal, judging by those quotes.

£16 million, Fecking hell! How does Wenger get players on the cheap?

If it was United that were interested in him, we'd have to fork out £20million at least.

He didnt impose himself well at all. But he certainly has talent and would do well at Arsenal. He'd be a fantastic Hleb replacement, almost like for like. Dazzling skills and movement, but not great end product (yet). Exactly like Hleb.

One thing that sets him apart from Hleb, he's fucking selfish. I would compare him more with the likes of Nani than Hleb. But that might be a good thing, as he would actually shoot alot.

If ever Wenger gets him, he will surpass Hleb easily.

ben arfa is more effective coming in central than sticking him out wide at a traditional winger role. we already have ronaldo for that, and giggs and nani do their fair share of cutting in.

He is more talented than nani, no question about that. Is a good buy for arsenal if true.in terms of natural ability, he's the best young frog around (yes better than even benzema). However, with his petulance, i am not sure if from a character standpoint that arsenal is the best club for him. Someone like ferguson might be able to deal with him better.

That is not why I'm saying it. As a winger Ben Arfa is far better than Hleb in very way. He just needs a bit of fine tuning by a Wenger. Which would take only about 6 months.

Wenger needs to spend big in the summer. He is too stubborn to realise that his squad has obvious flaws, and Flamini and Hleb going will only increase these.

My point is, Hleb is the majority of the way through his career and, whilst being easy on the eye and influencial in Arsenal's attack - he doesnt get the numbers down on paper. He doesnt score goals and he doesnt create enough to make that irrelevant.

Ben Arfa is the same with his movement and skill, but is also the same with his end product. The difference being Ben Arfa is still just a kid with lots of poential - you expect a few problems with end product. And those will be fixed, for sure, in a certain amount of time.

He was absolute rubbish when we played them.

Incredibly selfish, can't shoot to save his life, no end product, plays with his head down. I'm delighted United aren't in the picture for him. I don't normally condone this, but Benzema's ability is superior.

This isn't final yet but hope it is, the guy has huge talent and can become a great player for us. Needs a bit of work but not many better than Wenger at bringing the best out of players.

You should work at a football club if you can judge a player so thoroughly based on one game. Funnily enough your first two sentences almost fit the description of a certain C.Ronaldo when he first joined your club.

Great buy if true.

Talent is still pretty much all raw, but under correct guidance and assistance he could flourish to be great.

To be fair they called the Sagna deal weeks before it happened. Also Jean-Michel Aulas has come out recently and said he would be open to Ben Arfa leaving and when asked about Ben Arfa a few months back Wenger said if he was available he would be interested.

Though until I hear something from Wenger I won't believe we have signed him

If Monsieur Wenger actually splashes the cash then this may happen. Ben Arfa is a player with a lot of ability and if nurtured at the right club, he can become something special.

Said we should have signed this kid a few seasons ago and i'de love us to go in for him, pace ability and beats people for fun. I agree he's a rough diamond but with SAF's help he could be world class, reminds me of messi the way he goes pass people. I know he plays on the wing now for lyon but i think this kid could play upfront with rooney, or tevez and provide that outley you get from raw pace. AKA, young anelka

The thing is his game would never allow him to lead a line. IMO he is the on player aorund apart form Messi who can really be like Giggs in his earlier days
