Brazilian Teenager Dodo To Join United
Sir Alex Ferguson is signing a Brazilian teenager – Corinthians centre-half Jose Rodolfo Pires Ribeiro Dodo.
Fergie’s South American contacts tipped him off about the 17-year-old, who is set to follow compatriots Rafael and Fabio Da Silva to Manchester United. Dodo has starred for Brazil in the South American Under-17 championships, helping his country to two clean sheets so far. The tall and skilful left-footer is strong in the air and talented on the ball, likened to Rio Ferdinand by those who have seen him come through the ranks. Sources say he has an EC passport through his Portuguese background. United will pay Corinthians a small fee at first but the deal could be worth around £5m if he makes the grade. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footba...5875-21298685/ |

I heard he's very quick, often leaves opposing strikers for dead

How many Brazilians would he have?? Rafael, Fabio, Anderson, Possebon, and then Dodo. We should start a Portuguese speaking team add Ronaldo, Nani, and Manucho and other random 3 players including John O'shea on the goal, John O'shea in defence, and John O'shea in attack.

Brazil really aren't the best at producing world class centre backs are they! Remember that clown who played at Leeds having played CB in a world cup for Brazil? Can't think of his name but by christ he was poor! |

People seem to be getting confused as to the difference between the "home grown" rule and the "6+5" rule.
The homegrown rule is what we have at the moment - clubs must have a certain number (I think it's six) players registered for Europe who have spent at least three years at that club between the ages of seventeen and twenty-one. It doesn't matter what nationality they are as long as they've been at the club, and it only affects European competition. The 6+5 rule, on the other hand, works differently. I'm not sure if it's replacing the homegrown rule or not, but it's certainly not the same thing. The 6+5 rule demands that in your starting eleven you must have six players who can play for the national team of your own association. So for Manchester United that means Englishmen, for AC Milan it means Italians, Barcelona - Spaniards, Lyon - Frenchmen, and so on. It also affects all competitions, not just European ones (so the Premiership as well as the Champion's League). It's a big, big deal, and clubs need to start getting in English talent. So all these Brazilians we're getting it at sixteen or whatever might be great right now, because they're young enough to meet the homegrown requirement in five years, but it'll actually do us not good in five years, because then we'll need a predominantly English side. |

b) Even if we don't want him any more what's to stop us making a profit on him selling him to some Portuguese team or whatever? Worry about it when it happens FFS. |

b) Because Portuguese teams will be in a vastly better position regarding foreigners, what with Brazil being a part of Portugal and all. And I'll worry about it now because it's happening in three years. Hardly an age away - this kid will barely have time to make an impact before he suddenly has to be good enough to earn one of those five spots. |
