Chelsea release Ballack & Joe Cole

According to John Cross at the Mirror:

Joe Cole and Michael Ballack released by #Chelsea. Ballack will surely go back to Germany. Still don't think Cole's going to #Arsenal

If true, I reckon we'll have Joe.

Ballack can retire.

About 15 minutes ago Jason Burt of the Telegraph was reporting that it would soon be clear where Cole wouldn't be next season - looks like that was this release.

mclaren should snap up ballack but i doubt wolfsburg can afford his wages.

then again maybe not since VW has been splashing cash left right and centre in aquiring all sorts of companies this past year.

Doubt it - he's got one big Bundesliga contract left in him first.

Being reported by several other journalists now too, appears to be true. Apparently reducing wage-bill and rejuvenating the squad

Sure hope so The only reason I can see for him to choose Arsenal is because he can stay in London. Other then that, United is the obvious choice for so many other reasons.

How will they reduce the wage bill when they'll spend 20 million or so finding a replacement and paying that player 100 grand a week.

If this is true then its very odd considering Ray Wilkins said less than 48 hours ago how Ancelotti was very keen to keep Cole at the club.

Still, please get in their fergie!!

Well there's journalists from the Guardian, Telegraph and Mirror reporting it. Seems legit, and not all that surprising, Cole started contract negotiations months ago and they've never looked remotely close to agreeing terms. Ballack is ageing and has offered increasingly little to the Chelsea midfield. Both had been re-negotiating their contracts, but with Abramovich wanting to reduce the wage bill and inject some youth both were looking at wage cuts.

Both players will leave at the end of the month when their contracts expire.

Ballack makes sense, i think everyone expected him to be released at the earliest opportunity, the only reason im surprised they’ve supposedly released Joe Cole is because as ive said only very recently were the management staff talking very positively about keeping him at the club and giving him a new deal…...seems an odd move to then basically chuck him out the club les than 2 full days later whilst hes away at the world cup, seems odd doesn’t it?

I always expected Cole to leave on a free, but i didn’t expect Chelsea to release him so soon after their recent comments, something must have happened.

Either way lets hope Sir Alex gets in there, the chance to sign a player of that quality with the exact skill set and positional expertise we requiring for absolutely nothing is surely to good to turn your nose up toward.

At a complete guess, perhaps Wilkins genuinely wanted Cole to stay - but he doesn't have any say in the matter when it comes to salary negotiations and Abramovich has spoken.

could this be a possible agent rings up chelsea "joe is getting dsitracted in SA, he isnt going to sign with you unless he gets his wage demands, if you arent going to ffer then release him so we can get a new club before englands first game"

Nothing on Sky sports news or the BBC about this. Hoping (in Coles case) it's BS.

Oh yeah dont get me wrong i know Wilkins has no say in any matter such as this at the club, hes merely the monkey, but just seemed strange timing thats all, i hope its true of course, i want Cole at United.

Ballack will probably end up at Milan to add a bit of youth to their ageing squad.

Just a prediction. City like to sign premier league winners with experience and if they thought Vieira could do a job then Ballack can certainly do a job. They'll be the biggest cash offer and theres no reason he'd turn that down. He took the money to go to Chelsea so...

With Cole I think the champions league would be a major factor for a player in his prime, so he could resist City a bit more. And of the rest we'd probably offer him the best money and best chance of success. So I expect now that Chelsea have conceeded his time there is over, we'll make our move.

Sorry, that's just plain idiotic. They bought Vieira because he is, irrefutably, a Premiership Legend - perhaps one of the top 3 midfielders to bestride the League in it's history. He was brought in as much for his experience as for his ability - and by the way he played some lovely stuff for City last year.

Ballack is far from being a great or even good PL player - he'd just get in the way up there.

Lets hops so, he really is tailor made for what were lacking at the moment…..i think, especially in the bigger matches away from Old trafford he in that in-between position just off Rooney would be perfect for the way we look to play in those games, quick counter attacking football in the final third, ball carriers and interchangeable players swapping positions, as we know Coles more than capable of playing from either flank as well which would mean we wouldnt have to worry to much about injuries to one of Nani or Valencia heavily weakening our wide options.

Schalke or Bremen, can't see any other realistic German destination for him. Wolfsburg can't afford him and they won't play in the CL.

How can Chelsea release players whose contracts have expired? Makes little sense to me. It's like saying United sold Tevez.

I see Ballack returning to Germany.

Wouldn't be surprised if Harry fancied Ballack to add experience for their CL campaign. I guess Cole will end up here or at Arsenal unless City offer him big wages.

They've already played their final contracted season so it's moot if a club "release" them three weeks prior to 1 July.

Basically the club have chosen to not resign the players and allow them to enter "free agency." They haven't released them in the spirit of how contracts work.

How hard would it have been for Chelsea to give both a contract during the season and selling them for a pretty penny at seasons end. There's a good 15 mil worth of players there.
