Daniel Alves to Barcelona

First big move of the summer. I believe it's for 29.5 million euro plus some variables and part ownership of David Navarro of Mallorca.

Good signing but it was basically completed weeks ago. He will prove himself to everyone who thinks he can't defend.

La Liga - Sevilla bid farewell to Alves

Sevilla have said goodbye to Brazil full-back Daniel Alves ahead of the 25-year-old completing his transfer to Liga rivals Barcelona.

"He is one of the most important players in Sevilla's recent history, and maybe even in the entire history of the club," Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido said.

Alves was a key figure in helping Sevilla to win two UEFA Cups, a Copa Del Rey, a European Super Cup and a Spanish Super Cup in his five-and-a-half seasons with the Andalucians.

Reports have suggested that he will move on a four-year contract for a fee of around 29.5 million euros (£23.3 million), rising to 36 million euros (£28.4 million) depending on appearances and results.

The right-back was due in Barcelona on Tuesday to take a medical before completing the transfer, according to Barcelona's official website.

He'd never have cut it in England.

Look how small/skinny he is, he's got no size on him what so ever.

You're right.

Although whenever I've seen him play (not that often) he looked like he had a bigish frame. Guess my eyes were decieving me.

Another wannabe winger. Great going forward but can't defend for shit.

Clichy is a far better defender but not as good going forward. Alves is more like an extreme version of Ramos, Cichino or Lahm or like his obvious inspiration Carlos.

Clichy is rather good at defending.

Most interceptions, and (I think) most tackles/won ratio in the League. And when he does make the occasional mistake he has enough pace to rectify the situation.

Er, good try though.

Well Chief, I'm not so sure about that. Dunga and Brazil think that Douglas Maicon is a better choice. Are they totally wrong??

My impression is that Alves is lacking consistency. In team like Seville that's OK. We'll see how he manage to impress in Barca.

Whereas the PL's best full backs like Evra, Clichy and (maybe) Cole give Arnie a run for his money.

If tiny Gale Clichy can cut it in England os can Alves. Alves is a far better defender than most on here care to admit. People think it's a piece of cake dominating a flank in a league that possesses the most attacking talents in world football.

Yes. Playing Maicon ahead of Alves is just like playing Abidal ahead of Evra. Maicon may not be Abidal. But like Abidal he is the better defender as compared to Alves. But as an overall fullback he is vastly inferior to Alves. You will realise this when you get to see Messi and Alves on one flank for Barca.

I'm certain you are inaccurate on his consistency. But anyway time will prove who is right

Personally having seen alot of Maicon you can't argue that he is also a fantastic full back. Maicon is bigger and stronger and probably faster while being as good on the ball however he is not as technically gifted or as good as an attacking threat (although he is a wonderful attacking fullback) but he is still a great player.

Messi and Alves is a disgustingly frightening thought.

He is. Alves though is just better. Cause he can defend and going forward he has no equal.

Alves is superb.

Just because he is so good going forward and attacking, people have this mis conception that he is a shit defender. He is a decent defender too.

Very very good signing for Barca.

Because Brazil don't have centre backs of great quality to cover for Alves when he goes on an offensive run. In United, I'd prefer a full-back with offensive qualities as we have Vidic and Rio who are good enough to cover both positions temporarily.

I think he would cut it in the premiership. He is quite physical, to be fair.

Why does everyone think you have to be physical to cut it in the prem? Zola, Evra, Irwin, Clichy, Junhinio, Owen are/were all great players in the prem and were not physically the biggest. Then we have players like Djemba x2, Obi Mikel, Amarouso, Baptiste who are all built to kill and who haven't lived up to expectations.

old news, but he's a quality player. Barca will be devastating with Messi and Alves on the right flank, but that could leave them vulnerable on the counter-attacks as Alves is the most attack-minded RB in the game.
