Spanish newspaper are always reporting that we've agreed fee's on certain players. £17.5m seems a lot for a goalkeeper as well...

Take with a pinch of salt..and a pound of butter.

What an awful cake that would be.

It does look fairly solid this De Gea thing now. It's hardly a new rumour and the fact that there is a very limited number of keepers around that we'd be interested in anyway, does kind of lend credibility to these reports.

It isn't like a new striker or midfielder where there's 30 different names and suggestions thrown around the place like an Essex girl at an orgy. The rumours seem to be consistent and it seems to have been our number 1 target for quite a while.

At this stage, without meaning to give in to tabloid speculation, I'd be more inclined to be surprised if it didn't happen than I would if it did now.

I'm fairly sure the pronunciation of his name will be 'De Gee' with a hard 'g'

Christ, if that were the case this forum would cease to exist.

I think Aaron is spot on. This seems more than the usual tabloid cobblers. We've obviously been keeping a close eye on the fella and it's no secret that we're in the market for a new keeper in the summer.

I'd genuinely be surprised if this happened. SAF doesn't like signing very young goalkeepers, yet alone throwing them into the team straight away. Once thing I would say though, that assuming VDS stays on as a coach, he'd be such a massive help to a young lad like De Gea.

I think he'd be an awesome long term replacement, and has more potential than any of Adler, Neuer or Lloris, but at 20 years of age it'd be a big risk.

Whenever I've seen him he's reminded me in his style and the way he carries himself of Edwin.

But Sport doesn't have an anti Atletico agenda in the same way AS and Marca do, it's like saying you'd trust a City paper over an everton one surrounding stories about us, it's madness.

All those news are the same story from spanish press recycled over and over again. As much as I'd love us to sign him, I don't think there's much substance in it for now.

But we know that we will be signing a new goalkeeper and he is one of the top one's in Europe and these stories are appearing in multiple outlets.

I sometimes think this need to rubbish every transfer story for the sake of it is very occasionally a very misplaced virtue.

Well no he isnt.

But he's outstanding for his age group and perhaps one of few good keepers who might be available.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has laughed off rumours that David De Gea is set to join Manchester United because the goalkeeper is currently looking for houses in the area.

De Gea has been mooted as a possible replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar, who is retiring at the end of the season, but United have been told they will have to pay at least £22m to sign him.

But the transfer looked more likely after rumours circulated that De Gea was looking into the possibility of buying a house in Manchester.

However, Cerezo was quick to down play the rumours.

"I'm also looking at a house in the Canary Islands, but that does not mean I will go [there]," he joked.

You are missing my point - I'm not saying that I'd trust any of them. However, if they were all running the same story it'd be a lot more believeable.

If it goes anything like the last Spanish player who shopped for houses in Manchester, we can expect De Gea to sign with Liverpool next season.

A product of Accrington Stanley's youth system, De Gea spent his first professional seasons with the reserves, in NPower league 2.

De Gea does not rhyme with 'fortay' or 'way'.

Yes, it seems he's our number one choice followed by Neuer. It says our goalkeeping coach is taking spanish lessons to soften the language barrier.

That's odd... his agent just confirmed he has a €20 Million release clause in his contract, so Atletico technically can't have rejected that bid, as it would have activated the release clause. So it's clear that this is a made up story from the Times.

We are looking at the lad though, and are interested and that official.

Have you not read anything regarding the release clauses in Spain?

They're not a simple beast, and that's only for domestic clubs, internationally they are null and void.

Oh sorry, didn't know that at all. I'd say that bidding in or around the release clause price should get an agreement though, but I'm not sure id the player himself is all that enthuastic to move to such a big club yet. We'll see.

David De Gea's agent seems to think differently.

"Right now, the player has a contract with Atletico Madrid and if Manchester United or any other team want him they will have to reach an agreement or pay the whole release clause."

Fergie et al won't be happy that the agent has blabbed his mouth off I suspect, we know how secretive the club is when it comes to transfer business.

Clubs outside Spain have to pay a huge tax on top of the release clause which the clubs in Spain dont. Think thats what Sid Lowe was saying after Spuds went crazy and tried to spend 30+m on a striker on deadline day

So effectively it will cost the clubs outside spain around 20-25% (cant remember how much it was) more than the release clause

Interesting.

Confirms if anything that we'll fork out the big bucks for a goalkeeper then.

Or, that his agent just wants him hyped up so he gets loads of money.

The latter then.

Not sure why there is always so much scepticism surrounding transfers when Fergie has stated that he will invest in signature players when the time is right.

I don't think anyone is skeptical that United will buy a goalkeeper, just that De Gea is the man. Well, anyone that is except for those who have been saying for the past five years that the club is skint and won't be buying any new players while the Glazers are in charge, but that foolishness has proved false again and again.

To quote the article:

Quote:
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo, in response to the reports of United's interest, suggested that they may not follow through with a firm bid. He said: "I am looking at a house in the Canary Islands, but that doesn't mean I am going."
We've known that United were looking at De Gea, as well as Neuer, Adler, Stekelenburg and maybe Buffon, so there isn't really any news in this article.
