I can see your point, even tho' a scoring ratio takes account of such things.

Anyhow, I'll stop disputing Bent vs. Ashton, even tho' the answer is fairly clear cut in my view.

Back on thread topic: I'd be hugely surprised if Man. United go for Ashton - it would be a huge come down after all the talk of Berbatov, Benzema, Huntelaar etc.

No, instead of Ronaldinho the club bought Saha in January. Ronaldo would still have been purchased.

Also Ashton is being linked with Manchester United, Bent isn't.
He was prior to Spurs ponying up a huge transfer fee to sign him.

When i saw that over head strike the other day i thought hed be an ideal 3rd coice striker for us. then i saw he got injured and realised he may be injury prone-the exact thing were looking to get away from, especially in the striker department.

He went down a bit hard and bruised his arse, you can't really help that

He's fine now and was able to play the full 90 minutes he would have just been in discomfort

He is not injury prone, impact injuries can happen to any player regardless of their fitness etc Ashton has just been unfortunate with them

To clear up Ashton supporting Man Utd;

Quote:
Dean Ashton has been voted the West Ham United player of the month for the second time in a row following a poll of whufc.com readers.

The 24-year-old was singled out in March as well and already looks a contender to take the plaudits for May after his superb goal at Manchester United last Saturday - his fourth in seven matches. This latest honour was for his contribution in April, when he produced hardworking displays in the 1-0 defeats by Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers at home and away respectively before a superb goal and all-round display in the 2-2 home draw with Newcastle United. That came after a bout of tonsillitis that caused him to miss the 2-1 win against Derby County.

Ashton, who was followed closely by Robert Green in the poll, said: "Obviously it's great that the fans think I deserve to win it again and to get it two months on the trot hopefully means people think I am on a good run of form and not being affected by my injury any more." The No9 was certainly moving freely when he unleashed a superb overhead kick late to score past Edwin van der Sar on Saturday although he did later feel a problem with his groin as a result of the acrobatic attempt.

It was worth the discomfort and the subsequent enforced substitution as he felt it was the most spectacular strike he had ever scored. "The goal on Saturday was the best of my career," he said. "It was made more special by the fact I did it at Old Trafford against Man Utd which is the team my family support and where I dreamt of scoring growing up as a boy. It is just a shame we couldn't put on a better performance as a team but we are looking to end the season on a high on Sunday at home to Aston Villa."
He supports Liverpool

I doubt it, as mentioned earlier in the thread when I was trying to get his signature another fan asked him who he supported, he said Liverpool

He doesn't mention he supports Liverpool in the media as he is a professional and you can imagine all the rumours it will spark. Though there is no problem with saying he supported Manchester United as a child.

Thank God for that. Ashton is the kinda player Benitez would buy. And no - it's got nothing to do with his name even though it's shite.

Now to put it to sleep for good;

Quote:
Dean Ashton admits to being ‘flattered’ by reports linking him with Manchester United, but the only talks he is seeking are those that clarify his future at West Ham.

The former Norwich and Crewe striker has endured a tough season at Upton Park, with injuries hindering any hint of regular first team football.

Two superb goals in his final two matches of the season have helped Ashton force his way into Fabio Capello’s England squad, as well as helping him to attract reported interest from United.

Ashton insists his only priority is a meeting with Alan Curbishley, where he will seek confirmation that the club intends to keep him this summer.

"I suppose it is flattering to be linked with United, but you don't really read a lot about what goes into the papers,” said Ashton.

"The thing I’m more worried about is what West Ham think of me and whether they want to keep me.

"As far as I know I'll be here. I haven't heard anything myself and the only worry is that the club haven't spoken to me yet so I don't know where I stand with the club at the moment.

"Obviously I'd like to speak to the club about my future. I'd just like to know where my future stands. I haven't really been told particularly where my future stands at the moment. "West Ham is the team I play for. I've got two years (left) here and I want to talk to the club because I've really enjoyed myself here and that's all I'm really

The future of Dean Ashton is on the agenda at today's West Ham board meeting.

England striker Ashton, who scored a late equaliser in the 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, wants assurances about his career at Upton Park.

Ashton said: "I just want to know where I stand. I haven't really been told that at the moment.

I'm not saying I want to go. I have seen my name linked with other clubs, but I'm more worried about what West Ham think of me and whether they want to keep me."

Owner and chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson was expected at today's meeting to confirm that Alan Curbishley must trim his squad.

The club, who bought almost exclusively from the English market last summer, may turn their attention to Europe for new players, particularly following the appointment of Italian technical director, Gianluca Nani.

with roon, ronnie, tevez, i think we should sign a good (not necessarily the best) striker, so ashton fits the bill
repeated for several times, we are one of the best teams but it does not mean we need to sign all the best players
what we need are good players fitting us e.g. cole, yorke, ole, teddy, cantona, ruud, ronnie, etc
when we signed them, they are not the best players known to the world but they turned out to be history creator, so why ashton is not good enough to us

Sky Sports News is reporting that Manchester United have tabled a £10 million bid for Dean Ashton. I think most of us would put money on the fact that they will, in the end, succeed in prizing him away from Upton Park. However, surely £10 million is a joke for a player who has scored 10 goals in 13 outings this season? We’ll be a laughing stock if he leaves for anything less than £15 million. Why on earth would Man U want a player who was valued at less than that anyway? Have we learned nothing from the past? What a joke it was to let Joe Cole go for £6 million … and any number of other players for less than their true worth.

Has it really been reported by SSN? What's your feeling about this one, CH? Will he stay or will he go?

No idea, I don't watch Sky Sports News and there is nothing on their website, the bloke who write the article though is a politician / reporter so I doubt he will be lying about it being on Sky sports News for everyone to read

After hearing Curbishleys comments I don't think he will go especially not for 10 million, Ashton has scored 10 goals in 13 starts this season thats worth more than 10 million.

I think he will have a new contract on the table by the end of the week and judging by Ashtons comments he will sign it

Have a laugh, if he goes for 10 million we was robbed, 12 million would be the least we should take. With strong interest from Portsmouth, Newcastle and Sunderland too we should be looking for 15 million.

I don't think we'll sell at all though

West Ham United are due to meet with Dean Ashton on Friday 16 May to discuss terms for a new long-term contract at the club.

With the 2007/08 season only just concluded last Sunday, the focus at the Boleyn Ground has already switched to looking ahead to the next campaign and Ashton is an integral part of Alan Curbishley's plans. The 24-year-old striker, who finished the season with eleven goals including five in his last eight matches, has two years left on his contract and the aim is to secure Ashton's services in line with the club's vision for the future which also includes the return of key players like Kieron Dyer and Craig Bellamy.

West Ham United Chief Executive Scott Duxbury said: "The end of the season was the appropriate time to discuss such matters and to meet Dean Ashton and his representatives. We will sit down on Friday with a view to agreeing a new long-term contract to keep Dean Ashton at Upton Park. Everyone at West Ham United is committed to taking the club forward and we will keep all supporters up to date with developments via the official website as and when we have them to report."

How do you rate the possibilities of him leaving CH, percentage wise 100% he'll stay?

As long as we offer him a new contract (about 40kpw which is over double his current wages) he'll stay

We will be able to offer him that and i'm confident he'll sign so i'll say im 95% sure he will stay

I'd say he'll stay and a have a great season for you next year, but if you don't qualify for a european competition by this time next year and a big club sniffs around you'll get a nice price for him. As i see it he will be the established english number 10 and will probably not be happy if you loiter in mid-table next season.

That said i see you finishing 6th maybe with right signings, so we shall see.

I don't think we need to concentrate on new signings really

Next seaosn we will be able to play

-------Bellamy---Ashton

Ljungberg----Parker----Dyer----Faubert

McCartney---Upson---Ferdinand---Neill

--------------Green

Thats not a bad a squad at all we just haven't been able to play it, if we can improve some of the back up players aswell i.e. Boa Morte out and a new left winger in, Zamora out and a young striker in etc. We will have a very good squad.

I think the above squad with a few new faces should be more than capable of challenging for Europe especially if a top 4 team wins the league cup and two top 4 teams are the finalsits in the FA Cup. That would mean places 5-7 will be UEFA Cup and 8th the Intertoto.

Yep decent team, its Curbishley that I find hard to rate.

You, Portsmouth, Spurs, Everton, Aston Villa and perhaps Newcastle are hard to seperate.

Wouldn't Kewell be a typical West Ham signing on the left wing?

Yes it will be close between us, I think it is all going to come down to each team keeping their best players i.e.

Portsmouth - James & Defoe

Spurs - Berbatov and Keane

Everton - Cahill and Arteta

Villa - Barry and getting Carson in permanently

Newcastle - Owen and Martins

West Ham - Ashton, Parker and Green

As for Curbishley I want to see what he can do now with a decent squad that hopefully will be injury free
