Dean Ashton for United
MANCHESTER UNITED are weighing up a shock summer bid for Dean Ashton.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been keeping tabs on the West Ham striker as he searches for a player to add physical presence to his options at Old Trafford. He is considering making an £8m bid and wants the England hopeful to play in a similar role to the one Teddy Sheringham performed for him at United. Ferguson tried to sign Ashton before he joined Crewe as a youngster and has monitored his progress ever since. Despite a year sidelined with a broken ankle, the former Norwich forward is still regarded as one of the brightest attacking talents. Yet the Hammers have been slow to offer him a new deal. Talks are due to resume in the summer but a spending squeeze at Upton Park means he is only likely to be offered half that of other big-name Hammers. He has two years left on his deal and Portsmouth, Newcastle and Sunderland are monitoring him. All three are likely to offer better packages and Pompey could even add UEFA Cup football if they beat Cardiff in the FA Cup Final. United have also been watching Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz, who has impressed in his first Premier League season. But Rovers are likely to ask more than £15m for him. Wigan Warriors have put back their Challenge Cup tie with Whitehaven to Monday week to protect the pitch for what could be United’s title decider with Wigan. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/...es-Ash-splash/ What can you say? Ashton? ![]() |

Good player. In the Alan Shearer mould. Would be a good option from the bench or to rotate our strike force. Certainly a better option than Manucho.
I can only see it happening as a fourth choice striker though. We still need another top class striker in the squad. A strike force of: Rooney, Tevez, Benzema and Ashton would be fucking awesome. |

'Old fashioned English centre forward', with more technical ability than the usual Old fashioned English centre forward. For £8m, could probably be a decent addition to the squad, although untested at any top level mind, and suspect fitness.

Ashton is clearly superior to Manucho, plus he's already proven in the PL and would not need as much time to adapt. He would be a far better option as backup striker for us. |

Seriously though the two you mention Palacios and Valencia have been very good this season, I also rate Scharner and Jason Roberts can be a handful on his day. Now I gotta get out of here, this place is addictive. ![]() |

He's a good striker, English and different from what we have at the moment. If the price is right then I can't see why not to take a punt on him. Before his injury he was in good form and in the England setup. Not recaptured his form every since though.

I've been thinking about this whole summer striker thing and I've come to a few conclusions.
Louis Saha will be replaced. And he will be replaced by a striker with similar attributes - tall, strong, aggresive (although ideally not made of glass) Manucho might be a good replacement. But he's not had much joy in Greece and his work permit situation is a long way short of a done deal. We could be waiting until the very end of the transfer window before we find out if he's even eligible to play for us. Massive gamble relying on him to sort out our striker issues. Next we have Welbeck and Cambell. Two players who SAF seems genuinely excited about. Unfortunately, they are both a year or two away from really pushing for a place in the first-team. At least one, possibly both, of them will go out on loan next season, IMO. So it looks like there's a gap in our squad for a striker. We spent a lot of money last summer (albeit mainly with staggered payments) and these debts aren't going away, so anyone expecting us to spend 10s of millions on the likes of Benzema, Huntelaar or Berbatov is living in cloud cuckoo land. Barca, Chelsea, Real and Milan will all be trying to sign strikers in the summer and the inevitable bidding war (combined with the strong euro) means it's gonna take mega-bucks to sign on of these three, mega-bucks we don't have. If we do sign anyone, I think it will be a youngster from out of left-field or someone like Dean Ashton or Santa Cruz. They would both be very similar signings to the player we're looking to replace. A player from a mid-table club, who has proven PL experience and who won't cost us the sun, the moon and the stars. This rumour might have legs. |

Mind you, I hope Ashton hasn't read The Star. Whenever a player is linked with us, they always have the game of their lives when they next play us. Which makes this story particularly badly timed.

We may have a bit more cash in hand though for getting into the CL final and even more for winning it. This article estimates that the winner of the 2007 final will make £67mil... http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/16...earn-up-to-67m I would imagine that the 2008 figure will be more. |
