Mario Gomez is a class act, although he will probably move to a smaller club like Fiorentina who have been interested. Just like Berbatov did. I'm a bit surprised that Bayern haven't shown interest so far, I know they don't really need a striker but they are not exactly a type of club that would be held off by such argument.
Why do you think he'd move to a smaller club? He's got absolutely everything you'd want in a front man - big, strong, scores lots of goals, has pace and good technique, enough to beat his man. He was German player of the year and top scorer last year as well as being 2nd top scorer this year only being Luca Toni. As well as all this, most recent news is his club realise he wont be sticking around till the end of his contract but wont be selling him cheaply.

All this suggests he'll be moving on to a bigger club if he moves on this season.

Never seen Gomez, but from what I've heard, he seems perfect for us.

Right price, right age, right attributes, won't moan if he's on the bench...

That's because he was close to moving to Fiorentina a while ago and they will probably sign him in two months time when the transfer window re-opens. Milan have also shown interest, but I doubt they'll pursue him. I also happen to think that moving to Fiorentina would be good for his career, he'd get to play regular football in a league far stronger than German which will open a way to an even better club for him. It's always good to establish yourself at a smaller club when you're starting your top league career, in my opinion, although there's not always time for that.

I have seen Gomez a couple of times and I have to say he's a very complete forward, but not that super strong yet if you ask me. About as elegant as Berbatov and Ibrahimovic + a brain that can work out new ways to get a goal.

I know what you mean, I just think having been top scorer last year and player of the year, as well as continuing that form this year, he probably has a high enough profile to go staight to a top 2 side in one of the big leagues. Obviously, thats down to whether those sides need strikers...

Most top sides need high-quality new strikers. If Drogba leaves, all of the top 4 in England will need at least one, though Arsene will no doubt disagree. The demand always exceeds the supply.

I agree. This season could see a huge carousel with several "big" sides needing to rebuild somewhat.

Barcelona look very likely to do that, having read what one of their directors said today. Milan may do it too. With Drogba leaving and Grant taking over someone else's team, Chelsea will have some amount of trading and rebuilding to do too. Real Madrid are now being strongly linked to David Villa, too.

Which means, there will be a lot of speculation and activity regarding the transfers of the best attacking players. And if he does leave this summer, I can see Gomez at one of the biggest clubs next year. I hope its ours.

never.

no but in all seriousness, united don't do much business in germany (OH is an anglo lad who repeatedly put out 'come and get me' pleas in the media to premiership clubs).

i could see gomez moving to italy or if not, then spain (being half spanish).

So many reasons. We don't normally sign German players being one. Most importantly though, unless our scouting network pulls a surprise signing like our snatching Anderson. I can't see it happening. We haven't even been rumoured to be watching him neither have we been linked with him. Meaning in all likely hood it wont happen. Which is a darn pity if you ask me.

is he going to start up top with podolski moving to the left midfield/wing position that i've seen him play sometimes or is low going to play klose-podolski up front and gomez as supersub?

It depends on whether Loew goes for a proven partnership or form. If he goes for the partnership, Gomez will be super sub, if it is form, Podloksi will most likely play wdie left, now that Schneider is out of contention for Euro 2008.

Every player has their price, the way West Ham see it is Bent went for 18 million so a figure there abouts for Ashton will seal the deal

Keegan thinks he is worth 15 million so beat his offer and he'll be yours

He won't go for less than that anyway if he goes at all

Agreed. Add to that he recently said he is a life-long Barcelona supporter then you pretty much know he'll head towards Spain one day. Such a shame, he could/would do a tremendous job for us if he came here.

Darren Bent, based on the two seasons prior to his sale, was a reliable and prolific scorer who was fit for entire campaigns and looked like he was improving.

Ashton is an injury prone player who does not score many and has a terrible fitness record over the last 2yrs.

You're insane to think Bent is the barometer for Ashton.

Ashton's a very good player, but he's just slightly above Saha for reliability and is not worth more than £10m based on his career to date.

Above Saha for reliability? Not a chance.

Ashton is not injury prone, thats a commoin misperception as he has spent so much time injured. The bloke had Shaun Wright Phillips break his fucking ankle in a dirty challenge whilst training for England.

Here's the injuries he has had throughout the whole of his career;

If you can tell me how any of those are linked or make him injury prone please do

The bloke was out for over a year, he took his time to regain his fitness but I ensure you he has reagined full fitness and has no complications from any of his previous injuries.

I see a link there, he seems to have a recuring knee and hamstring injury, most likely related to each other.

He landed a bit hard on his arse and was a bit sore, he wanted to come off before half time but due to Cole not having a shirt he stayed on and he decided he was fit enough to carry on after half time.

In the second half though it was still a bit painful and affecting his runs so he was subbed, I wouldn't really count it as an injury to be honest as he'll be in full training again next week

Ashton really impressed me for the half we saw him. Not many hold off Rio like that and get a bike right in front of his face.. I guess because he'd ride the bench a bit I wouldn't mind it- think getting Gudjohnsen would be better if we wanted a player like him.

Gomez would be a perfect signing for me but I too doubt it. Wish we would get more German players in, they're used to a physical league and can come in the cheap. Was hoping for a Podolski link last summer- we'll see what happens.

You think you lot will let him go, CH? And for how much....

Think Fergie dropped a hint in his interview yesterday with that line about Ashton.
