Really?

I don't know, I just don't see it. Although, judging from Fergie's comments I think he's very much interested, and we all know Fergie loves to buy a player that has done well against us, so there is probably truth in it. I just don't see in him anything that would make me want to spend £10 million + on him. I mean, yes he's strong and good in the air, and can score the goals. But so are plenty of other players, and they are also quick, something Ashton isn't.

To be fair you wont get a decent proven in the Prem striker for less than him

Ashton's quality and SAF knows that. Ashton will play up front with Rooney for England this Summer. I think SAF will decide whether or not to sign him then. I wouldn't be suprised if he did go for him.

Has to be berbatov. to quote sir alex (talking about rooney) we cant afford to miss out on him imo.

Yes.

But then again, I wouldn't pay £10 million + for him.

If Ashton does well with Rooney I think he will go for him instead

The forthcoming friendlies will give SAF a chance to see how he performs with Rooney and Ferdinand hopefully Carrick too. Something that he wont get with Berbatov

I think what Rooney would thrive of Ashton and vice versa.

Berbatov also has a poor attitude and a big price tag whereas Ashton doesn't. Ashton will happily sit on the bench and miss games if required (like Tevez does) whereas Berbatov wouldn't.

Long term Fletcher's not good enough to be a first team regular for us. But I no longer cringe to see his name on the team sheet.
He still can not control possession well to be a United player. His strengths like when he is off the ball, whether that is tacking, closing down or making those runs in the box.

Well i think ashton would be a notch up from what fletcher gives us in mid if thats any use to you.

If we're keeping tevez and paying the 18mil fee or whatever it is then perhaps we dont have funds to sign the berbatov's and benzema's of this world. Ashton as a west ham friend of mine attempts to remind me frequently is a cross between shearer and sheringham.

Good enough for me. Not the 1st choice, but good enough.

It was just the 'Daily Star' trying to stir things up before the game.....expect all rumours linking him with united to cease......until the next Man Utd v West Ham game.

How do you explain SAF's comments then very out of the ordinary for him

I agree......BUT i thought it very verp strange for fergie to make specific comments about him after the game. He cant not have been away of the rumour...and to mention dean was a utd fan as a boy is just a bit odd.

I agree there. It's rare for SAF to talk about an opposition player unless he has a special interest in the player. Wouldn't be surprised to see us being linked with Ashton further on, although if the pricetag is £15 million Keegan can have him.

Alan Curbishley, after the last call ups basically said Capello had phoned to explain Green's absence and they spoke about Dyer and Parkers injuries but in particular Ashton and he had had said that if Ashton finishes the season well he will get called up.

very true. i rate ashton extremely highly and you are spot on when you say that ashton-rooney should be england's strike force. i remember watching ashton at crewe but especially at norwich where i thought he was the dogs bollocks. can lead the line extremely well, has all the attributes to be a goal poacher but also has very decent touch and a sharp eye for the short pass to create space and bring in runners from wide or midfield. i thought fergie would go for him at norwich and im not surprised if we go in for him now.

who knows, maybe after the foreign legion coming in last summer, this summer we're planning on staying domestic and going for richards and ashton. has to lose the bleach look though, ashton that is. he also looked like he could lose a couple pounds on saturday but a fresh summer should see him coming back to peak fitness and sharpness.

Ashton - Rooney will be a dream combo for England. They will be unstoppable if they play together for both England and United. You know our Roon is very good at developing partnerships

It's muscle now, he did come back slightly overweight but although he seems fat now it is just muscle, that suits him though and gives him a much stronger physical presence than prior to his injury. He is much better at shrugging of defenders now as you see on the weekend

I don't think Ashton will ever get the credit he deserves until he plays for a big 4 team. Most people seem to forget he was out injured for over a year and this season was his recovery season. It's good to see someone who has seen enough of Ashton to form a decent opinion on what he is capable of.

What team did Ashton support as a kid? I thought he supported Liverpool, but Fergie said yesterday that he was a United fan.

I read Ashton himself say once (while he was at Crewe) that his family were all United fans and he went to Old Trafford with them but didn't really support a club that strongly.
