Downing to Liverpool?
Aston Villa winger and player of the year Stewart Downing is refusing to commit to a new contract with the midlands club.
Caretaker boss Gary McAllister intimated that Villa would be opening talks with Downing over an improved and extended deal but Downing, who has two years remaining of his current contract, has indicated that will not be happening in the foreseeable future. "I know the club are keen for me to extend my contract as I only have two years left on my deal," the former Middlesbrough player told the Northern Echo. "However, I am 26, and at a major crossroads in my career, so I won't be committing to a new deal at the moment." Villa will hope Downing eventually changes his mind otherwise they could face the same scenario as now confronts them with Ashley Young. He has only 12 months left of his current deal and is being linked with a move to Manchester United or Liverpool. Downing is delighted to be playing regularly after an injury-hit first campaign following his £12million move from Boro in the summer of 2009. But he also admits he wants to eventually play Champions League football. He said: "I want to keep playing and enjoying my football. When I was injured that made me realise what it can be like to be out for such a long time. "It hurt. The most important thing is to play football, but I do want to play in the Champions League at some point." |

Good footballer I think, will do a job for Liverpool. Could link up well with Carroll.

If he wants Champions League football he sure as hell won't be getting it at Liverpool, he won't even be playing in Europe if he goes there. However he's decent, nothing more, so that probably fits a club like Liverpool right now

Typical Liverpool signing. He's found his level, for me. Don't know what business he has thinking he's good enough to play in the Champions League.

Can't blame him, he's always had a reputation as a mediocre player at a midtable club so if he gets a chance to push on and play for a team aiming for CL football he'd have to take it.
I don't think he's so bad; passing, striking, crossing - he's fairly good at. His technique's far from laughable. Offers good balance too. He's just a bit creatively inept, uninspiring, lacking that bit of spark needed to push on. Also, he's deceptively quick. |

He's a decent player who has improved since joining Villa, would be a good signing for Liverpool. A better player than Adam Johnson who is rated quite highly on the caf. Comfortably Villa's best player this season.

Those are not the stats of a man who should be holding out for Champions League football. |

If Nani was to stay at United and be first choice LW, Valencia first choice RW, I could actually see Downing as a decent purchase as a genuinely left footed backup option on the left. I think his overall play has improved greatly over the last couple of years. No good enough to be first choice at United imo, but would be a good back up to Nani on the left

![]() Tbh, Downing is not as bad as many on here make out, he is pretty good all round but just not as flashy as Young. Quite versatile too, he is capable of playing centrally and on either flank. Not fantastic admittedly, but nowhere near as shit as some posters are claiming. |

He isn't shite, nor is he particularly brilliant, he is very very average. Kind of like Barry, was at his level at Villa and if he moved up a level it would most likely be a level too far.
Although; he is a very direct player with a good cross, and if he were to move to Liverpool he could prove a good supplier of goals for Carroll. |

Till Bent came along the same could be said for Villa really, so while i am not defending Downing as such, but simply pointing out that stats are often subjective and should not really be used to draw concrete conclusions about a player's general effectiveness or overall contributions. |

He's not special but wouldn't be a bad squad player.
I think a fair few on here are dismissing 'Pool quite stupidly. Based on King Kenny's reign thus far, they could see a few upsets depending on who they bring in... |
