Where does this stuff come that Dalglish doesn't control the transfers? I thought every transfer potential was run by him and he has to agree with it. He might not control the figure per ce, who knows, but he certainly ain't getting players he didn't want.

At Spurs, Comolli was on a committee with the manager, levy and the club secretary. They would decide our needs, manager etc would give suggestions and then Comolli and his scouts would go out and compile lists for the committee to go through.

Whatever you want to say about Comolli, he knows a lot about the football transfer market and is often able to pick up quite a few gems. At Spurs, our transfer policy mostly revolved around buying young English players from the lower leagues for the future and talented players from abroad. The only signings I can think off from the top of my head which follow the transfer policy Liverpool have followed since he got there were Bentley and Bent. I certainly don't think he's got overarching control over transfer policy.

Dalglish must have had ridiculously low expectations then.

Downing must be better than Joe 'betterthanmessi' Cole in training.

VIDEO: It's official, Liverpool's Downing really has bin rubbish!

By Neil Moxley

Last updated at 12:26 AM on 27th January 2012

For Liverpool fans wondering what, after a return of one goal in 26 games, the club saw in Stewart Downing, the secret is now out.

Owner John W Henry and chairman Tom Werner watched YouTube footage of him supposedly kicking five consecutive balls into five dustbins from 30 yards at Aston Villa’s training ground and were persuaded to complete a £20million move.

The only problem? The footage which shows Downing’s party piece was a fake. Villa’s audio-visual team edited the video to suggest Downing achieved the feat with five consecutive kicks.

When Kenny Dalglish’s interest in Downing was first communicated to the club’s paymasters, they logged on to YouTube. ‘There was some footage of Stewart where he is kicking footballs into five different trash cans,’ said Werner. ‘It was brilliant.
‘John and I said, “Oh my god, this player is brilliant, we have to figure out a way to make a deal”.’

It will never be known for certain, but was this mock-up responsible for Liverpool increasing their offer from £18m to £20m when the two clubs were haggling over the fee last July?

As for Villa, it appears that Nick Finney, who works in the club’s media department, was the brains behind the wheeze.

A Villa source said: ‘It was part of our 2010-11 season-ticket drive. ‘There is a message after it which reads, “Seeing is believing,” which we thought was a giveaway. Obviously, it wasn’t a big enough clue.’

That can't be a genuine quote? Surely?

Absolutely fecking hilarious if it is. It would also go a long way towards explaining the cack-handed way they managed the whole Suarez incident. Cretins.

Well there you are.

They have given the name of the mastermind behind it. Nick Finney.

Even if it's geniune, a good footballer has to have much more than precision in his passing...

Aston Villa made daylight robbery by selling Downing and Young at those prices, both are extremely limited with their abilities and skills.

Ridiculously harsh on Young to be fair
He's had a disrupted season, and was good at the start of the season

But yeh, they did great business with Downing

It has though, for all the wrong reasons.

Really I thought Rafa was a bit of a clown in the transfer market, but not to be outdone Mr Dalglish has taken it to the next level.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he has been worse for Liverpool than Carroll.

At least Carroll set up the goal that knocked us out of the FA cup...

Downing has done nothing and been even more dire... 20 Million, you must be having a laugh.

Even i'm shocked by that. Downing is actually a decent overall player but Liverpool seem to have made him much worse. Carroll has got the same effect too.

Downing had a lot of potential back in his Boro days. Obviously not Giggs potential, but he could have been a Valencia type player. He basically provided Middlesbroughs creative threat single handedly for 3 or 4 years during which time they reached the UEFA cup final and won a trophy

Mcmanaman yesterday made a comment that made me cringe, he basically you have 2 world class wingers out there, one full of confidence and playing really well as such, the other's confidence in the crapper ...

He was talking about Valencia and Downing.

Downing world class?

The difference with Henderson is that they did buy him as a player who had potential and they expected to develop over time. It's difference with Downing. He's a player in his prime who they expected to make an instant impact, which he hasn't done.
