Fabio Paim joining Chelsea?

Paim tipped to be Blues success
Winger set to work with Scolari
Last updated: 20th August 2008

Former Portugal Under-21 coach Jose Couceiro has backed Fabio Paim to be a success at Chelsea.

Paim is being tipped to move to Stamford Bridge on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon with a view to a permanent deal.

At one time the 20-year-old was regarded as the next big thing at Sporting, but over the past season he has failed to make the expected progress.

Now Chelsea's boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is ready to take the young winger to London, where he hopes to kick-start his career.

Former Porto chief Couceiro, who worked with Scolari for two-years, insists that Paim would flourish under the Brazilian.

"He is a player with enormous potential, which needs stabilising and let's hope that will come from a new club," Couceiro - now head coach of Lithuania, told Antena 1.

"Chelsea is a great club, so it is possible he will stabilise there.

"It is important to train with coaches who can speak your language and with a coach of the level of Scolari."

Another one of the Jorge Mendes stable. In the Sporting youth teams he was supposed to be doing things at 14/15 that not even Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma were capable of at a similar age. He then got some bad injuries I think. I suppose from here he could either disappear into obscurity again or start carving out a decent career for himself at a high level.

The next wonder kid United were linked with about 3-4 years ago. Had started to believe he was another Chris Byland.

Don't know whether we have first option or not. But it doesn't matter, if we aren't interested in the player..

A fantastic signing for us, truly an emerging world class talent that will take the Premiership by storm.

Since I've never seen him play or even heard of him before today, I base this on absolutely nothing.

I actually thought you were being serious there.

Do any Chelsea fans have any idea about him?

Apparently Roman picked him on FM, liked what he saw and insisted Scolari signed the youngster. That's how it works at Chelsea.

Seems like a pretty accurate description of Chelsea's transfer policy.
