Mario Gomez, the rest turn into NOT so excellent players the moment they return to their clubs. The thing about these German players is that they know how and when to turn up for the Fatherland BUT not necessarily for their clubs (Ballack excluded).

United in £12m deal for winger

United in £12m deal for winger

Manchester United have put Germany's Euro 2008 winger Bastian Schweinsteiger at the top of their hit-list to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to pounce for the Bayern Munich star if Real Madrid win the titanic tussle for Portuguese ace Ronaldo - but could face competition from Chelsea.

£12m-rated Schweinsteiger, 24, has the kind of experience and top-class pedigree that United will need if they lose Ronaldo to his "dream club," and contact has already been made at the highest level, The People says.

Schweinsteiger, who was also on Chelsea's radar under Avram Grant's management and is still interesting the Londoners, would be able to move relatively cheaply.

That's ridiculous. Schweinsteiger might be rated as much as Ronaldo was when he came to United, but he's definitely no Ronaldo. Not even close.

Unlikely Bayern Munich will release him even United are interested in him.

Good wingers are rare and would cost an eye to buy them. Schweinsteiger on the other hand has 2 years left in his contract. I think that Bayern would sell him if the price is right.

No-one is saying he will be the next Ronaldo, he's already older than him so it's impossible anyway. But he is a very good winger and there aren't many out there who could be bought for £12m. No-one can replace Ronaldo though.

Obviously not sure if there is any truth in this, but I like the look of the guy - bit of nastiness about him and difficult to get the ball off of him.

Maybe that's why KH Rummenigge defended United in the Ronaldo saga...

Does he really need to be a Ronaldo replacement?? Shouldn't we be looking for another winger anyway? Park is out again and Giggs is on his last legs, would make sense to me regardless if Ronaldo goes or not!
